Looks like Cunningham will be available to Galway this year as he's turned down Cork City.

Heard he was pretty lively against Mayo. Must be keen if he turned down a contract with last year's champions in Cork City. Could have been playing European football. Will be interesting to see how he gets on.

Prenty has a nice line in that peculiar strain of arrogance that runs through GAA officialdom.

QuoteConnacht Council CEO John Prenty has defended the decision to go ahead with Sunday's FBD dead rubber fixture between Galway and Roscommon at Tuam Stadium.

With both teams having already advanced to the competition's final, there has been rife criticism over this weekend's meeting going ahead but Mr Prenty has backed the Council's choice, stating: "you have to respect the integrity of the competition (and) can't be moving the goalposts mid-season."

"We've had several people telling us how to run the fixtures," Mr Prenty is quoted saying by The Irish Times.

"But last year, in the last round of the Allianz Football League, Galway played Kildare in a dead rubber, then played each other again in the final. No one said that should be called off.

"Roscommon are playing Cork in the last round of the league this year, and could meet each other again in the final. Will they call that off? And Galway and Roscommon have all used about three different teams, each week, so I'm sure they can find 15 players for Sunday."

He doesn't even have the basic facts straight, as the 2017 round 7 Division Two match he references wasn't even a dead rubber, if Galway had not won that match then Meath would have advanced to the final against Kildare. Given the palpable relief both on the pitch and in the stands when Galway finally fell over the line, it was far from a dead rubber.
Given that Munster made the final round adjustments to their pre season competitions, Prenty can't even say that there's no existing precedent for the type of change that both Galway and Roscommon want made for the match this Sunday.

Prenty is a slieveen of the highest order. Turns up on Connacht final day with an old tattered anorak, looking like something pulled through a hedge.
would you prefer him looking like a complete w**ker in a blazer?
at least keep the criticism to his incompetence and arrogance rather than his choice in fashion

He also refers to the scenario that the Ros v Cork game at the end of the league could be a dead rubber,
so it could for a few different reasons but does Mr. Prenty not understand that season tickets are sold in all counties and therefore the gaa are obliged to play these games apart from the fact that they are games in a national competition.
His level of incompetence is baffling. His disregard for player welfare is even more baffling.

Fair play to him, it's a far bigger decision for him given where Galway are currently at compared to if he was from Dublin, Mayo or Kerry where the likelihood is that you'll be in the thick of the business end of the championship if you are up to it.
I must say that I assumed that he'd take the contract offer from Cork when it was there, the very best of luck to him this year, certainly I hope it works out extremely well for both himself and Galway!

Does beg the question, at what point will term limits be applied to Provincial Secretaries? Prenty's been there since the mid-90's, Frank might get no shortage of stick in Cork but he's far from alone in having a tight grip of control on his relevant board's goings-on through sheer longevity.

 is prenty paid?
as I understand it paid officals cant be subject to time limits . in order to get around the time limits in mayo they took the sectary on as a paid official to give him time to bury the bodies

Will be interesting to see how he gets on. I saw a lot of him over the years playing underage with Headford. He was unmarkable at times. But obviously has played little or no football since 2013 (he was a sub for the Galway minors in 2013 but didn't play in 2014 as he had signed with GUFC).
He will be a huge addition to Headford in the intermediate championship also.

Syferus

Surely a LOI player who is only on the cusp of making a squad is only going to be making very low wages? The idea of being able to stay at home and make more money doing a job while still getting your sporting kicks wouldn't be terribly unattractive in those circumstances. Good luck to him anyways.

Cunny Funt

The FBD final played Feb 18th in the middle of the league is one the silliest things John Prenty has come up with and he had his opportunity to bring that game forward to this weekend but no. Next year you will see the FBD final will be back played in January because Prenty will know he was wrong.

macdanger2

If both counties want the final played off this weekend instead of in two weeks time, then it should be changed.

Not defending Prenty here as I wouldn't have much time for him but the counties either see value in these games or they don't. If they don't, then they shouldn't be in the competition. If they do (presumably as a development opportunity for fringe players) then what's the problem with having an extra game?

Fair enough from a supporters point of view, it's not ideal if there's a fixture clash but at the end of the day let's, it's only the FBD anyway ffs, it's not like there'll be mad celebrations whether ye win or lose

Both Galway and Roscommon requested for the final to played this weekend with McStay even suggesting for it to be played Friday night under lights. Going ahead with this dead rubber on Sunday and then playing this final in between NFL games when that was meant to a break is far from ideal.
Is the ref going to finally blow his whistle?... No, he's going to blow his nose
