Last time ros v galway u21 match at a galway venue it was salthill in 2011, Ros cbs were in all-ire colleges b final same day and there were at least 2 families with lads on both teams, Galway would not agree either to a change of time or venue when requested by Ros, you can bet your bottom dollar it will be salthill again,  Ros minors beaten in 2012 in all-ire quarter by Kerry and were most unlucky on the day, lost by a point and missed a peno and much more, minor of 3 years ago is no way a reflection of this years u21 form, minor is a one year thing but u21 is the best of 3 years minors and a much truer reflection of where a county is going, on everything I have seen this year ros should win this one but sport is sport and you never can be sure.

Didn't Galway scrape past Ros' in the Hyde in 2013?

Is the club just called Corofin, or is it Corofin Gaels/Pearse's/Sarsfields etc? I remember being at an underage disco there about 30 years ago, the reason I ask is I recall seeing Tír na nÓg painted on the walls of the hall, the same name as my club.

No, just called Corofin. As stated, one of the biggest parishes area-wise in Galway, certainly east of the Corrib. Years back, they put in a huge emphasis at developing and proper coaching of underage players, led by Frank Morris and others. They've been reaping the rewards since, though for a number of years they resembled Ajax a bit in that the players all seemed to play to a system rather than embracing spontaneity. Been very impressive the past 12 months, howitzered their way through Galway. It helps that other sports have gained very little traction in the parish - no rugby club, little soccer, a pocket of hurling down Sylane direction, but nothing that distracts them from the main business at hand.

Thought we have flattered to deceive a little during this campaign. Performance v Italy was turgid for a good while; narrow victory over a badly-managed and selected France team; better v England who were indisciplined. Today, we were one-dimensional, and I don't think our backs are as good as some may believe. We don't have great pace or imagination in our attack angles but international rugby is more and more about one big hit after another now anyway. Might have it all to do v Scotland who will be seeking to redeem something from a dismal campaign.

Galway team named for the Cavan match on Sunday in Pearse Stadium @ 12.45

Manus Breathnach
Johnny Duane
Finian Hanley
Cathal Sweeney
Paul Varley
Garreth Bradshaw
Gary O'Donnell
Fiontán Ó Curraoin
Enda Tierney
Sean Denvir
Michael Martin
Damien Comer
Danny Cummins
Paul Conroy
Adrian Varley

Good to see Duane coming back into it; Kyne from Clonbur didn't seem good enough. The presence of Conroy and Comer (both of whom played well in Newry apparently) (physically) strengthens things up more in the forwards where P Sweeney must still be injured (he wasn't a no. 11 as played last week though). Doubt if Martin will hold on when more forwards become available.

As Derryfinest said, the Slaughtneil defence is something Corofin would have not come against before. slaughtneil don't play open football and this will not suit Corofin.

May be true, but Corofin will be the best team by a long distance Slaught' will have met. Corofin's defence is also good and if they forge ahead by a couple of points at all, they can afford to be patient and pick off the Derry side on the break. You always have a chance, especially in a club match, but it will be a title well-earned if Slaughtneil win it. Best of luck to both.

Corofin may or may not win handy but the bit in bold is rubbish. They beat Ballinderry in the Derry final who at the time where the Ulster Champions.

Yes, but as subsequently stated, B'derry were beaten by Vincents, themselves beaten by Corofin last month. (Yes, different years I know.) Slaught' have won the majority of their games by 1 score or less, itself a good think I'm sure as it breeds belief in a tight corner. However, no team has come near Corofin in this c'ship, bar a couple of scares at times v. Vincents. Don't forget, they comfortably beat Ballintubber in Castlebar, who themselves beat reigning Connacht champs Castlebar Mitchells.

Not trying to disparage Slaught' or be complacent on Corofin's behalf, but the way I read it, this is arguably the best team they have ever had. Lot of scoring potential and pace in the forwards; not overly reliant on one player; strong, sticky, experienced backs; good footballing midfielders. Possible weaknesses may be the goalie whose restarts are not always the greatest, a little shortage of physical power, slight lack of mobility in midfield, esp. if Steede isn't fully fit.

Don't like odds of 3/10 on a 2-horse race mind you.

As for Di Maria he's becoming an awful pain in the hole, why would you dive as a left footer cutting in from the right hand side and with a lovely angle to shoot  ??? He was rolling around earlier in the game as if he was hit with a bus because someone dared win the ball off him  and he just rolled around as play went on and eventually just got up and not a bother on him, get the feeling he aint liking England at all.

Been saying it here since the start, Di Maria is over-priced and over-rated. Apart from a fairly good finish to last season, his tenure at Real was largely under-whelming. If he was indispensable Madrid would never have let him go.

A decent but not great game in Newry – I must say that it was a great venue for getting in and out of being so close to the motorway – with a big wind blowing which Galway had in the first half to go up by 6, Down managed a point more against the wind than Galway and that was the difference in the end.
etc.

Good report Fhairche, tallies exactly with the ones I got from the lads that were there. (I was in Salthill). Big Kev sounded like he was talking through his teeth a bit on GBFM afterwards, you could tell he knew it was a chance spurned. Lot of store been put into the fact that the Corofin contingent will strengthen the team further, I hope it's not misplaced, as the team certainly needs competition for the corner-back slots at the very least. Would also like to see even another couple of forwards pushing through, just don't think Martin will cut it at the highest level and, as stated, Patrick Sweeney isn't the paciest, in spite of his other qualities. Don't think Walsh (K) has too much patience with Walsh (S) and is laying down an early marker as to who's boss. I hope Walsh Minor heeds the lesson as he will be yet needed this year.

Home wins now a must, but not a given. Wonder where the Kildare game will be played if a result is really needed in that tie?

Was it true that Reddan wasn't his birth name, but that he changed it when he signed up for Tipp'? Had to do so, because he couldn't dislodge Seanie Duggan from the Galway position. Maybe a myth....
