McGuigan would be the second forward on the team for me after Clifford. I think he's almost nailed on. You're looking at maybe one or two more from Cluckey, Rogers and McKinless then.

We need to remember that until Gallagher came along, we hadn't won an Ulster championship game in years.
Meenagh was already there before Gallagher arrived too so credit where its due.
I think it's clear now that the combination of both are what brought Derry on.
Without Gallagher we prob wouldn't be at the level we are at now. The same could be said of Meenagh.
For what it's worth, meenagh should be given the chance to remain if he wants it.
If there's any notion by derry County board to appoint a new manager, there is only one option out the and that is malachy o'rourke, but I'd want meenagh still on the ticket for consistency.
O'rourke might not want that.

The conversation on North derry South derry bias has been rumbling on for years for the derry senior team.
I don't believe it exists. If a player is good enough, a manager will want them.  What benefit would it be to anyone to not select best players based on their club? Every manager wants to win and if they think a player will help them do that they'll try to get them on board.

The question around how do we improve north derry clubs is a different one. Really what you are talking about in the city is to change the family culture of the vast majority and to get them to take kids to football from u6s and keep them at it. It has to start at that level. Changing that family mindset in those areas will eventually improve the standards in schools and eventually at senior level. There is no quick fix. I'm not sure promoting the games with coaches is the answer either.
How do you change that culture? No idea. Soccer is still prevalent in the city. How do we sell gaelic games to the population of derry in such a way that its compelling to families who traditionally only have a passing interest in gaa? Of course there are hard-core gaels in the city, but not enough to regularly provide county players at the required level.
As for established clubs in North derry, almost all seem to struggle with numbers, with dungiven/banagher perhaps the exception. That's perhaps a geographical issue, so perhaps merge a few clubs? Controversial I know, but perhaps it would be to the benefit of all? I've got no answers to be honest, but I don't  agree that there is deliberate bias against North derry players.
For what it's worth I think you've hit the nail on the head at the end there. North Derry clubs are almost all incredibly small in size in comparison to South Derry clubs.
You've got Dungiven and now Steelstown who would be comparable in size to the bigger clubs in South Derry and you could reasonably expect to see county players come through these clubs relatively regularly. There's probably a drop off in size then to the likes of Faughanvale, Banagher, Limavady, Coleraine who have had varied fortunes over the years but there's room for improvement there. You could also argue clubs like Craigbane and Foreglen have done relatively well for themselves, winning Intermediate titles over the years, given their small size too.
I don't think merging the clubs is a starter but a North Derry regional team outside of senior maybe an option.

Would depress you reading in here. County in an AISF, people from all over the county going to support the team and people on here more worried about trying to stir division and saying we're divided. Not what I see in reality thankfully. Best of luck to Derry today!

What a performance by Pogacar but also Wout Van Aert. I get the logic of Vingegaard and the team in that if pogacar was going to be vunerable again then try and make the race extra hard and hit him towards the end. It backfired a little on them. At that level every day they could hurt themselves as much. UAE not up to it so far in protecting Pogacar but didnt need them much yesterday as had the armchair ride behind Van Aert and Vingegaard. Have a feeling Kuss might not be 100% at height of his powers, will see as race progresses.
Rooting for Cavendish today but he will be up against it. "Disaster" Jasper will be hard beat, although think Ewan with a slice of luck will be very close as well.
Bordeaux finish almost always a bunch sprint.
Tomorrow looks like a break away day, lumpy, any GC men losing lots of time yesterday so they will be allowed in break tomorrow ? MW perhaps.
I thought Kuss looked really good funnily enough and doing his job to a tee. He's sitting top 10 in GC despite not being a team leader and sacrificing himself each day.

Great to top the group and i got it wrong about Donegal!!! Was disappointed with Brendan Rogers this last two games I know because of his previous performances he is very much a continuously " marked man" which should within the context of the system allow more space for someone else to shine eg McFaul but its not happening for him either.  We're now in tougher territory playing against better quality opposition and all the backroom teams are very well prepared on the strengths of their opposition.  We need to create something special to get over the next hurdle and just as Sherlock from Cork produced a fantastic performance from the subs' bench v Mayo I think Lachlan Murray can give us a real scoring boost if we can get him good quality ball....

what do folk think ?

Not sure I agree on the Rogers comment, but in general you can't expect him to star in every game.
He's still having a very strong year and I'd put him up against any MF in the country.

Lachlan Murray is a strange one. I can see the argument for starting him. But I also see the need for a top quality impact sub and in every game he has come on he has been top drawer. He could be our version of Dublin's Kilkenny in their pomp. Oisin McWilliams too if he's fully recovered.
Its great to have quality on the bench to keep the first 15 on their toes, to cover for injuries and to inject quality and pace for the last 15-20 mins.
If we started Murray in place of Niall O, for example, would Niall make the same impact off the bench that Murray can make? I'm not so sure.
Difficult management calls and on the days it works it'll be a master class in tactics, but on the day we get beat there will no doubt be those calling the tactics out as wrong because Murray didnt start.
It's been "working" so far, I think we have to put faith in management to make the right call at the right time.
Murray is class act and I think McWilliams isnt far behind when fit. Realistically Benny Heron is probably in his twilight years of intercounty, so one of them will certainly step in when he retires, so it's not far away for either of them.

Lachlan Murray to Ciaran Kilkenny in the peak Dublin years is some comparison. Ciaran Kilkenny started every one of the x6 in a row all ireland's, would Lachlan Murray have x1 start under his belt in championship? No pressure on the kid brick
Did he maybe mean McManamon as the impact sub? Murray probably isn't as good as the others yet defensively which could play a part in him not starting. He's very talented, though still very young. Hopefully see more of him later in the year, I think Croke Park would suit him.

There seem to have been quite a few ex players from that kind of era have got dementia.

(I suspect it's going to be a massive issue for rugby players in years to come too - look at Steve Thompson the english guy).
Especially rugby forwards.
I think Jeff Astle was one of the first soccer players linked to dementia.
I can't be arsed looking up the stats but I'd be very surprised if front or second row forwards were high up the concussion tables. Torpedoing through the ruck towards a 9, hammering a back row forward in the jackal position or flying out of the line to nail 10 (Jonny Sexton) or 12 are common sources of head injuries in the matches I watch.

Steve Thompson the England hooker might disagree, he can't remember a second of his world cup win.
He might if I'd said no hooker ever has been concussed.
Is a hooker not a front row forward? Every day is a school day. I thought the hooker and the two props made up the front row?
You obviously didn't learn to read in the school days you had.
Well that wasn't very nice now was it? I would be a very casual rugby fan and genuinely thought i'd missed something on the naming of positions. I do get what you were saying now reading it again.

After his performance last Saturday, Derry fans won't be too impressed to learn that Noel Mooney is down to referee the fixture with Donegal in Ballybofey.

Was convinced I had read that wrong, how can it be that a Referee does the same Team twice in a year let along twice in a week with the panel they have, don't think you'd even get that at club level
Referee is apparently changed to Brendan Cawley

Enda McGinley predicting our demise already . . .

https://www.rte.ie/sport/football/2023/0525/1385632-mcginley-derry-dip-possible-in-group-stages/
He also said we'd struggle to name a panel of 26 a couple weeks ago when there was 30+ in the panel. Was completely bluffing.

Though I think Monaghan should learn more from the last game and make this one much closer. That may be perceived as a dip from Derry but I think we'll play in a similar way even if the result is a lot closer.

Giro D'Italia has a great 3-way battle at the top between Thomas (current leader), Roglic and Almeida with Ireland's Eddie Dunbar sitting a very respectable 4th overall 3 minutes adrift of 3rd place.
Ben Healy slipped to 2nd in the Mountain standing behind Pinot so will have to attack early on today to try to regain that jersey.
3 stages to go and it's set up nicely with a mountainous stage through the Dolomites with steep climbs, an ITT with a summit finish (Roglic could have bad memories of this) before the procession around Rome to finish off.
