Saw a bit of this while the Mrs was across the road in Lidl 😁
Port look lively. Adam Ryan back is great to see and they had a good few of last year's minors on board. Missing a few lads too so a very decent result.

Port are definitely a team to watch. I wonder is Ryan an option for Laois?

In fairness I'd say entered wrongly on system due to original game being in Cretty, which is unplayable due to field works.

more interested to see how the younger players are doing, we are going to need them. saunders at portlaoise is getting a run with the senior team, though frank Flanagan seems to be hurling. I thought he was good last year playing with laois. Barry at o dempseys seems to scoring well and it will be interesting to see how Coffey and Murphy do with Port.

courtwood seemed to have a few good lads as well.

Being top of Div 2 (third tier) of the County League while a big deal in Courtwood is not all that interesting, cool it Eddie.  ;D ;D ;D I am guessing your a Courtwood man.

You won't find anyone from Courtwood on here that thinks winning a few league games in April is "a big deal". Don't worry about that😁.

Saunders looked a fine player last year. Is he with the under 20's?
Whelan of Ballyroan is another great prospect as are Coffey and Slevin. O'Flynn too.

It will be interesting to see how U20's go.  I just think they will find it extremely tough going with their preparation they were quite lucky as minors in the draw they received.  I am not a fan of potential show me what you got and then I will believe it.  So far for these chaps it really is a case of big fish in a small pool.

I wouldn't read anything into this year's under 20 team. It's thrown together. Had a good win over Sligo last night but really fear for them against Kildare in the first round.

I think BallyroanAbu hit nail on head with the way we sometimes talk about young players in Laois. Big fish in small pond sums it up quite nicely. The standard of our underage teams the last few years has dropped so significantly that the few players that show any sort of talent/potential have too much expectation placed on their shoulders.

Portlaoise demolished Port . Port still have a lot of work to do. Already ominous signs as regards the gap between Portlaoise and the rest . This was without Holland , Healy, Flanagan, Seale, Rogers , A Kelly, Mulligan , Glynn , B Carroll , B Smyth, Dunphy, Lawless.Ronan McEvoy went off injured after 10mins. Cahillane and Bruno only played a half each too.The new guy Saunders looks like a decent player at fullback. Portlaoise could genuinely field two decent teams and still beat everyone else . Chris Finn is improving , Paddy Downey is improving , Young John Kavanagh and Jason Maher are too.

Decent enough game in the Old Pound last night.
Conor Meredith is easily the best player in the county that's not involved with Laois.

Makes you wonder as right....Sure they have about 40 players of a standard of Senior ...Very good intermediate level and Id say if they entered a third team they'd probably win the junior a chmpionship as well!

They didn't have a chair or Sec at the time, let alone an Inter mgt. Portlaoise's senior footballers mask a club with problems, its a shame because its not just them that suffer, Laois suffers because of their inefficiencies.

Is this a wake up call that teams need to amalgamate at senior level? I know stradbally won the senior 2 years ago but they aren't winning underage and that's with the Gaels. It's inevitable that Arles will join up too as they are also struggling for numbers.

There are too many senior teams in Laois with some of them just happy to keep their senior status on an annual basis. 8-12 would be plenty.

And nobody is really benefitting either. Portlaoise are no stronger for the lack of competition internally and this breeds disinterest in players who fall just that little bit short. For a club of their size, they are massive underachievers in my opinion. Winning Laois is nothing to crow about these days. All told, club foootball in Laois is a dung heap. Quite literally, one or two good young lads can make a massive difference to a team. It won't change because there is no appetite for that. As a result, improvement won't come easy for the county or clubs. A truly shocking score line irrespective of circumstances.....

Portlaoise winning Laois means nothing , a club of this size should be challenging for Leinster year after year nothing less should be expected

I would like to see Laois explore a system similar to that in Kerry for county championship. Having 16 senior clubs in the county of our size is pure madness. Reduce championship to 10 teams with tops 6 clubs staying senior and then 4 regional sides. strengthen the level of competition at intermediate and junior championship level as a consequence. You could still play a club championship earlier in the year (present the Kelly Cup to the winners of that competition and if a regional side were to win the county championship then the club champions would move forward into Leinster).

I know what you're saying and you're certainly right about the amount of senior clubs. It is madness, especially as most of them would be Intermediate standard at a push.

Truth be told, outside of Portlaoise, NO club has enough players at their disposal. Port have potential, as do Graigue, but they invariably flatter to deceive. With the way Portlaoise are doing things (not entering teams at lower levels) it's hard to see how they can improve, but maybe they don't need to because nobody else is doing anything. The lack of ambition is sometimes the biggest enemy. Nobody wants to lower Portlaoise's sails, but a bit of competition wouldn't go astray.

I that the first time PortLaoise played in Stradbally since the 10 in a row was stopped?

I think they wanted to put down a marker there.

One would be hoping that they might not be as motivated for the rest of the year!! ;D

They won one each last year in fact, Portlaoise winning in Rathleague, and Stradbally getting revenge in Delaney park.

Saw most of the Ballylinan Strad game last night.
Very poor stuff. Can't see either of these at the business end of things this year although obviously Walsh and Alan Farrell will hugely improve Ballylinan. Not sure what the story with Cathal Dunne is. Rumoured to be going or gone to USA. Jamie Farrell is a lovely footballer. Obviously not in the 26 for Saturday.

It's good that Portlaoise are in the pack.

They've two more years of weakish underage teams to feed through, before their current U15 team appears. Their U14s go to the Feile too and look strong, though these two teams appear to be improved by acquisition rather than organically.

Their U13B team is playing in Div3 and looks to be stronger than their Div1 A team. Their U11 A team seems to be middling enough. Unless they go harvesting around the parish again for more 'new' players, it would seem that they are relying on their current U14s/15s to bring the new quality through.

Was at Portlaoise v O Dempseys last game. Very good competitive game. O'Dempseys got a penalty in the second half and couldn't be caught after that. Plenty of hard hitting and excellent scores.

Was there myself a great spectacle it has to be said....

Portlaoise's second team(you could nearly say with so many missing)are a great team in their own right and play a lovely brand of football.

There is no doubt if they had two teams in the senior the second one would get to a quarter final maybe more they would beat 8 or more teams that are there.

Thats not easily won but if they did get up there they would compete with a lot of teams just because of the brand of football they play alone!
