GAA Discussion / Re: Dublin v Mayo - AISF

Cannot wait for Sunday.

i think the general view here is that it might be a step to far this year but that we are in good shape for the next few years.

There is excitement but no expectation and that is when Mayo teams are dangerous.

Lar if your prediction comes through we will lose.

GAA Discussion / Re: Kildare v Sligo

Did Kildare not have the joy of meeting Monaghan and Derry half-way in Croke Park over the last few years?

It's a field at the end of the day. A dump, but it's the same for both teams.

Anybody when the draw is going to be made?

What we do know is that it's gonig to be one of Kildare, Sligo, Tipperary, Down, Kerry, Clare, Meath or Laois that we face.

Hard to know where we stand but the hope is that we are in good fettle to give any one of these a rattle.

But with Cork, Donegal and Dublin in the same hat as ourselves we are definitely the team everybody else will want to meet.

Delighted with the win.

James Horan is doing a fantastic job, and the players really are giving their all. This is the best Mayo team in 15 years.

Think we will probably come up short this year since we just don't have the top class forwards to bring us over the line. But if we keep working at things we may get the break in the next 2/3 years.

Lads can't believe ye are falling for the spin hook, line and sinker.

This decision isn't about venue capacity except for the fact that Sligo isn't accepted as a final venue.

Unfortunately we here in Mayo are in deep in the manure with our finances and this is about getting as much money as possible to throw into the debt. I'd prefer the game in Castlebar but everything here is about the pressure being put on Sligo. The Hyde capacity issue is a smokescreen to go to Galway or take the money and go to Castlebar. Big Kev would not agree to anything but the neutral venue.

So Sligo lads don't blame the Mayos. If we come out on top of this battle blame your county board. I'd be furious if our lads sold out if the shoe was on the other foot.

And whether the game is in Castlebar, Salthill or Ros the real supporters will be there. If you don't go to a match because you might be delayed in a traffic jam for a couple of hours how interested are you really?

Surely at this stage Markevicz is at a capacity that could cater for the crowd? There has been a lot of improvement work over the last 20 years. The stand is a bit of a disaster but would 20k not fit into the grounds? It would be a much better spectacle in a crowded Sligo than half empty Castlebar.

Back in Ireland after a year travelling. Delighted to see the lads in red and green going well.

That article in the Indo appears to say that Castlebar is a "done deal". If Sligo County Board are happy to play it in McHale Park we are more than happy to oblige them.

Maybe the Corofin supporters should just have accepted it like the Kerry supporters did when Joe McQuillan robbed them. The ref was only responsible for one side of those beatings. The teams blew it themselves.

There are far too many refs getting these big games though. How many are on the national panel? I know there are big numbers needed for the club championships and the national leagues but so many are substandard that it is at crisis point. They are never accountable and maybe the GAA should start more rigorous assessment rather than political appointments by Boards and provincial councils.

Best of luck to Fergal - a gentleman, a great Roscommon football man, and a brilliant manager. I'm sure he will walk the sideline for Ros again in the future.

It is a huge disappointment to the Rossies I am sure. They face a crucial decision now - get it right and they can build on what Fergal has done, but get it wrong, or delay over it and 2012 could be a disappointing year.

The Galway fans really haven't shut up about this whole management process the last few months have they. This thread is out of control

Only one ranking counts - the team that have Sam Maguire.

Everything else is idle chit chat

GAA Discussion / Re: Mayo V Kerry semi final
August 22, 2011, 08:56:44 AM
Ah it's frustrating and gutting but the season has to be seen as a success. It cannot be forgotten where we have come from - comfortably beaten by Sligo and Longford to an All Ireland semi-final is a massive jump. I'm not "happy" with losing by 9 points yesterday and at times you simply have to put up your hand and say well done to the opposition, the better team won. And Kerry were the better team.

Little mistakes were badly punished and the three points we gave away just before half-time were annoying and the changing of the game. When the Gooch went up unchallenged to field a ball at the 30 yard line he grew in confidence after that and the rest is history.

I think the rational Mayo fans (being about 90%) are well aware that this is not a season that you look on as an All Ireland being thrown away. There was a small chance of sneaking one - it was always unlikely and we are not ready yet.

But we have a manager who has a sense of direction of where he wants this panel to go. He has brought in a style of play that does need to be adjusted. We need 3/4 new players to improve things further and just need the lads to keep at the hard work they put in this year and go at it again and see where it takes them. I think we are firmly in the top 6/7 teams in the country and that there are going to be opportunities in the next 4/5 years for new teams to emerge. There is no reason why that cannot be ourselves.

At the start of the season the management and panel had 3 goals -

- stay in Division 1.
- win a Connacht championship.
- win a game in Croke Park.

All three were achieved. On top of that we have quality young players who have rediscovered their confidence. Cillian O'Connor has slotted into the team very well at such a young age and looks to be a solution to our freetaking issues. Aidan O'Shea, although frustrating at times, has now played a championship at midfield and he has potential to improve. Donal Vaughan has played 3 months football all year and has improved all the time. He looks like he can hold down the number 6 jersey. Ger Cafferkey has rediscovered his form and potential and is still our best option at number 3. In Andy, Alan and Trevor we have experienced leaders.

All in all there is more to come from our lads.

What a day! What a night!! And it still feels so good this morning. Boy did those lads give every ounce of energy to the Mayo cause yesterday. They have worked so hard since the disaster of last year to get themselves to this spot and they should revel in it, and give the rest of the Summer one hell of a go because you never know what might happen.

It was unbelievable being in Croke Park yesterday. It was a real day for the die-hard supporters. Many gave up on the team and didn't bother travelling. Those that were there stood by the team and were the 16th man that helped push us over the line.

Can we beat Kerry? Well we're in the very same position as yesterday but with more expectation. We actually need to improve on that performance to do so. Nobody will be talking about All Irelands. It is one game at a time - we are in bonus territory and I for one am bloody well going to enjoy it.
