The catholic church is just so out of touch. It seems like they can't see that they continue to make themselves ever more irrelevant with decisions like thatt ha tare to benefit them, and not the individual people.

You would have thought a drop in attendances and what appears to be a serious decline in the number of Irish priests would be enough for them to have a strategy session to understand why they are losing market share (in business parlance).

At least the GAA t**ker with rules (even if they are daft) in an attempt to increase the spectacle for the paying public, ie "improve the product".  Doesn't seem like the Church are even that bothered.

Quote from: Jell 0 Biafra on December 10, 2023, 03:24:41 AMI gave the eulogy for my grandad.  Ahead of time the priest gave me a talking to consisting of rules about how I couldn't go over a certain amount of time.   I had no plans to go long, but I still think that was pretty classless of the priest to try to tell me how I could publicly honor the memory of my grandad.
They'd rather do it themselves. Rattle through a generic CV on the person  <insert amusing anecdote> and a lot of the time they'll never have met the person unless when they were on their death bed. It's a weird setup.

Catholic Church making rules for a Catholic ceremony in a Catholic Church..... :o
Davy's given us a dream to cling to
We're going to bring home the SAM

quit yo jibbajabba

The rules seem a bit vague rossfan as what the posters are saying doesn't overly equate with the funeral we saw on TV on friday

If you want a show go to the Theatre. Mass is about reflection, pray, thanksgiving and so on. Granted it does not need to be boring and somber, but there has to be a certain amount of respect and decorum.

And the first time some family member waffles on at a funeral for half an hour with boring or inappropriate anecdotes about their loved one (inevitable sooner or later) then half the parish will be up in arms complaining that it's shouldn't be allowed.

I think if you go more "showbiz" at funeral you would get all sorts of attention seekers and i do think there was an element of performing for the camera the other day

Was strange  to hear at a catholic funeral, talk of  the Quran and Buddhism.

Although  I do think it's important to  involve items in the mass  that mattered to the person, be it a sports link,  a hobby, favourite film/poet/singer etc.  It definitely gives more meaning to the persons life  ,  and more comforting to the family .

But I've definitely never seen a funeral like  Friday's

Seems to be the done thing when it's 'properly televised' instead on the church webcam.

Seems to be a lot of preparation and organisation that goes into it.

It's a celebration of life, not sure it has to be all somber..

None of us are getting out of here alive, so please stop treating yourself like an after thought. Ea

My recommendations:

1. Strip out all the normal mass bits.

2. Allow 2 speakers at most, and a maximum of 5 mins for each.

3. Up to 3 musical interludes, of no more than 3 minutes each.

4. No rosary at the grave.

Depends on the circumstances. Someone like Magowan celebrate their life absolutely. Some young enough guy leaving a young wife and kid(s) behind probably not.

lol. As long as it takes place after the service ie after I can get out of the chapel, then I'm okay with it.
