GAA Discussion / Ulster club grading... A farce
September 27, 2011, 01:17:33 PM
Have started a thread in this in the past and it is something that really annoys me. As a Down man our system is fair top 16 clubs or if the case should be top 15 plus previous years intermediate winners competes at senior. Next 16 or 15 plus previous years junior winners if the fall outside thus league standing competes in intermediate with the remaining 12 clubs taking part in junior. This as I see it is fair.
However, when it comes to ulster level not one Down club team in the history of competition has made it to junior or intermediate final. A possible reason for this I believe is the grading system across other counties in Ulster. I believe in Armagh clubs can choose which level to play at. Whilst the winners of last years junior title in Antrim are back in the final again.
In order to add value and fairness to these competitions surely a provincial or even national wide grading system should be implemented.

Lads just wondering what experiences are off sport psychology with teams. Have vested interest in the area. just wondering things that have worked and things really haven't or experiences are? Try and keep individual names out of it cheers

General discussion / Shit did I just say that
February 14, 2010, 12:18:18 PM
Not sure if there is a similar thread on the board. However, coming home from the Down game was reminded about a night out last easter.

Bunch of the lads were out on for night on the tiles one easter, when we bumped into another fella we used to knock about with and his cuddly girlfriend( to put it nicely). One lad in particular who was very drunk and myself got chatting to the other lads' woman. With conversation drying and having heard some time ago the happy couple were expecting a baby, my friend thought it would be a great topic of conversation. So brings up the topic with the query " so you must be near ready to pop" to the response " No I had it two months ago." Literally didn't know where to look.

As said not sure if there is a similar thread but would good to hear such similar "foot in mouth" incidents.

GAA Discussion / Unfair grading in Ulster club comps.
September 16, 2008, 07:26:23 PM
Cullyhanna and Culloville both play division one football in Armagh yet are classed as an Intermediate team. Yet in Down no division one or top 4 division two team from the previous year can play Intermediate Championship. This IMO makes gives the Down Intermediate team an unfair disadvantage come Ulster club championship...
Any posters from other Ulster counties able to shed information on their grading systems?
Surely a uniform grading system must be in operation in order to make Ulster club championship at all levels ( esp Intermediate and Junior) competative.

Refs set to wear data-recording vests
19 August 2008

It has emerged that more inter-county referees across the country will be wearing the same space-age vest that Paddy Russell wore recently in next year's national league to record scientific data.

Russell wore the vest while refereeing the All-Ireland SFC quarter-final between Armagh and Wexford at Croke Park as part of a ground-breaking experiment with the American Department of Defence.

Head of the School of Health and Human Performance at Dublin City University, Professor Niall Moyna, explained that the vests were worn by Russell and his two linesmen to track their movements through GPS (Global Position System).

Moyna said: "Cameras were fixed on the individuals to track their movement via satellite. We haven't analysed all of the data yet but the GPS system tracked their heart-rate and respiration, along with the standing, sprinting and jogging he did during the game. The vest gives us the information and the psychological data which we can then use to design referee training programmes."

Both the Staff at DCU and the GAA's referees' association have been working together in the hope using the vests on a larger scale, with national league games on the agenda for next years

"In five years' time, every single sports jersey will have this embedded in them," confirmed Moyna.

Heard a lad in the bar in a very very drunk state ask a woman "to show your fa@@Y love." Needless to say he got a slap for his efforts. Anybody able to add any other smooth lines or actions they have heard or seen carried out in the pursuit of female company?
