Down / Tracksuits
February 06, 2023, 12:20:57 AM
Bit of a random one but just wondering if anyone would like a couple of classic Down tracksuits. I've one from the 2000s and one from the 2010s. Never been worn size small. I also have one from the 1994 All-Ireland year, but I have worn that one.

They have been stored in a vacuum sealed bag in my attic but I'm having a clear-out. Just thought on the off chance that someone might be interested I put it up here first before sending them to the recycling.

I thought I would start a thread even though I am not expecting much interest. Incredible how far from the public eye we have slipped since 2010 when every Down match would have a thread running several pages a week before the game. So why is it that this change has occurred?

We are not THAT bad. I mean we are comfortably in Division 2, took Tyrone the distance, probably a decent shout for a quarter final. Pretty much around the same standard as Armagh. Yet Armagh fans are much more enthusiastic to comment on their games.

I think it is just that there is nothing inventive or new coming out of the Down team for about two years now. We know what we are getting, and it's not very entertaining. We have reached a plateau and show no sign of getting beyond it and no pleasure is staying there. One thing, win lose or draw, I was always entertained at Down games. I can't say that that has been the case in most matches for the last 12 months.

Before we start discussing the prospects for the game, I was wondering if anyone needs  a hotel in Galway for the match. I have a room booked and paid for that I cannot use for Saturday night. Up for grabs to any faithful Down supporter that is making the journey. Anyone want to make use of it?

GAA Discussion / Down vs Leitrim 9th July, Newry
June 27, 2011, 08:20:32 AM
We got out of jail on Saturday. The midfield problems have been well documented. It si true that Hughes and McGinn would have helped a lot to win break ball. In fact Fitzpatrick would have helped there too. So hopefully for our next game we will improve a bit.

It simply didn't work at the weekend and no surprise really. There were several occaisions where Kalum King jumped for the ball with 3-4 Clare players around him. He never really had a chance.

The main positive for me though is that there is really only one problem to worry about for the management. Everything else looks good enough. So they have two weekls t work on this one problem. Hopefully they can sort something out.

Leitrim beat Sligo so they are far from no-hopers and should not be taken lightly. Though after Clare I doubt anyone will be doing that. But we have to be honest, to get a fixture at home agianst another divsion 4 side was definately a bonus.

Well lads what do we feel about this? I don't think it is being arrogant to say that we would epect a Down victory, the bookies and even the Clare manager wre pretty sure of that already. But if our midfield are outclassed again then surely we can expect pressure and it may not be a walk in the park.

Being realistic though and honest then you have to say we should win. But what can we get out of this game? Will we learn anything about our team, will McCartan be able to use it effectively to create a good perfromance to build on?

What do people expect teh line up to be? The forward line is pretty set except for the long-shot of Mooney playing. But who will line up in defence and in what positions?

GAA Discussion / Controversies & Sending Offs
May 23, 2011, 11:54:00 AM
Thinking here we can discuss the controversies each week (there are always some!).

I guess this week the big ones would be Graham Kelly and Tomas O'se

Does anyone have any idea exactly what Miskella said to Kelly to make him go so mad as to head-butt him? How long do people think he should be banned for?

Did anyone see what O'Se did to get sent off?

GAA Discussion / Injured Players - update
May 16, 2011, 08:13:55 PM
Thought I would start this thread and see if people are interested. I think we all like to know what players are injured around the country and so I thought one thread that everyone could contribute too would be a useful update tool for us. Sometimes you may miss a report in teh press/internet or not read it in the middle of a random thread.

If everyone adds the injury info from their own county it will keep us all informed

I'll start off (though this is probably well known)

County Down:
- Ambrose Rogers is back in training after a cruciate injury which was delayed by an infection picked up in the knee. He is well off full fitness and will be very unlikley to play against Armagh

- Benny Coulter picked up a bad hamstring tear and is questionable. But he will have had 5 weeks to recover by Armagh game so should just about be in contention for a start.

GAA Discussion / Kerry vs Down
April 04, 2011, 11:49:57 AM
We have a chance next week and the lads need to take it. At the very least they need to prove their championship credentials by winning. We were all over Mayo but in the end had to hang on for a point, we played well against Cork until the last fifteen, we were better than Dublin but lost, we out classed Armagh but only won by a point. I have no doubt they will put in a good shift next week but there is that wee bit of killer instinct missing, that little bit extra that edges one team ahead of another. There is no switch of player or smart tactical move that will solve this it will have to come from within the players and the team.

Everything else is fine. For all our debates, Down are now playing some of the best football in the country, it is just a matter of somehow the lads learning to convert that quality football into victorys. That sort of 1990's Meath spirit.

Kerry are the form team at the minute so it would be a tremendous step up for the lads if they could do it. Who would have thought even two years ago that we would be in the mix for a Division 1 title shot come the last weekend of league games?

GAA Discussion / Who gets the money?
March 04, 2011, 07:53:55 AM
I'm curious and I am sure someone here knows the answers:

1. Who gets the money for inter-county matches? Is it split between the teams, or does it go to HQ with teams being given a percentage? Or something else?

2. When a club ground is developed as a county ground does the club have to pay anything for it? Or is it effectively just like a massive gift?

3. Does HQ give money to counties or are they meant to be totally self-sufficient?

4. Does anyone have any other facts about money distribution I haven't asked here?

Just curious, this is not an attack on the guys that administer GAA and I hope the thread doesn't become one. I will say at this point that despite lots of people being very negative about GAA financial attitudes I think it is amazing value for money. I think soccer and rugby don't come close for value in terms of cost to entertainment ratio. I'm just curious as to how it all works.
