Post by: thejuice on December 08, 2018, 10:17:16 AM
Kicking off tonight. No idea of groups or whatever way they're playing it this time.

Decent Meath team named. Great to have Newman back. 5 debuts.

Subs: Andrew Beakey, Shane Gallagher, Thomas McGovern, Niall Kane, Shane McEntee, Graham Reilly, Owen McDonnell, Niall Hickey.

Meath hitting the ground running.  Louth well beaten by Wexford another long year for Louth?

Full Time
Meath 3-11
Laois 0-06

Only 2 scores on the last 17 mins but job done anyway. Won't read too much into it. Andy has the lads training since October so probably a step ahead in terms of fitness. What good that will do is next summer remains to be seen

Result from Allen Park

Longford 1-07
Wicklow 1-06

Wicklow missed buckets of scores in 1st half

Lot of games off today.

Full time in Ashbourne.
Meath 1-05
Longford 0-09

Poor conditions and we had a second string team out. Longford started strong 0-05 to 0-00 but we raillied a bit in the second half. Not much to write home about. Andy has named a much stronger side for the charity match against the Dubs tomorrow.

Won handy enough today 1-20 to 1-13 against Wexford today.

Into the semi against the Dubs at the neutral venue Parnell Park. Dublin will be a lot tougher than the team we faced for the Sean Cox charity game.

How was today's game as a spectacle with the new rules?

Looked great on the radio I have to say.

Longford play the winners of Westmeath and Kildare who are playing tomorrow.

Westmeath beat Kildare by 7 points to advance to the semifinal against Longford.

Confusion briefly reigned in Longford on Sat as there was a doubt as to whether Longford qualified - seems Leinster council are not keen to issue Group tables that are accurate.

Anyway we now face Westmeath on Sat at 2pm (prob in The Downs - is Cusack Park under renovation?) in what could be a bit of craic. Longford, of course, are short the Mullinalaghta boys, but are giving young lads a chance and most are coming through with flying colours.

Meath should beat Dublin so, one way another, looks like O'Byrne Cup final could be a good one.

Longford must be go fluirseach if they are flying without the Leinster club champions .

Cusack Park not under renovation, they are just spreading the games around. The Offaly games was in St.Lomans but was originally fixed for Parc Ciarain, Athlone. Pitch wasn't right.

Seems not only did The Dubs get a bye to the semi-final at a home venue in Parnell Park, the final is also set for Parnell Park.

So can we all call Liveline to complain (even it Meath do beat the Dubs)

Talk-to-Joe number is 1850 715 815

Dubs Galacticos would call Croke Park home. The Dubs' maybes and the neverwillbes would see Parnell Park as their home

Christ on a bike.

Longford were so inept it was almost funny. Was like the management rounded up 15 lads hanging around outside a pub and asked them if they wanted a game.

Final score was WH 2-10 LD 0-04.

Surprised by that. Thought Longford would be the stronger team. Meath have about 6 newcomers in the starting 15, some of them look promising like Niall Kane and Darragh Campion. I haven't seen the Dublin line up but we stand a decent chance if it's similar to the Sean Cox game.

Meath (SF v Dublin):

Barry Dardis;
Seamus Lavin, Conor McGill, Ronan Ryan;
James McEntee, Donal Keogan, Niall Kane;

Bryan Menton (captain), Adam Flanagan;

Niall Hickey, Darragh Campion, Daniel Quinn;
Ben Brennan, Mickey Newman, Thomas O'Reilly.

Completely new half forward line. Good to have Flanagan back in the middle.

For the 2nd weekend in a row why no extra time before penalties?

Dublin win 3-1 on penalties

Don't like deciding games like this. I hope this isn't kept for the championship. Not that it matters a whole lot. It was a good run out for the lads although against a team of unknowns outside of Dublin.

Mickey Newman was our top scorer on the night and certainly a huge addition to the team.

What would your preference be for deciding games? 2 10 min periods of extra time and then penalties would be what I would like to see

A period of next score wins would be better as at least it would be reflective of a teams ability to play football as a whole rather than individuals deciding the game on one particular set piece.

I would like this at all due to it being too much at the discretion of the referee....I would hate for a match to be decided with a free from a wrong call or blatant frees not given due to the ref not wanting to make the call.

Exactly, when there was the golden goal rule  in soccer it destroyed many an extra time period and was soon dropped.
Extra time followed by penalties (or 45s) if needed to separate the teams, is good enough.
