General discussion / Isaac Hayes RIP
August 11, 2008, 05:45:59 AM
One the greatest soul talents of all time, in my opinion.

Isaac Hayes, 65, a Creator of '70s Soul Style, Dies

By BEN SISARIO
Published: August 10, 2008

Isaac Hayes, the singer and songwriter whose luxurious, strutting funk arrangements in songs like "Theme From 'Shaft' " defined the glories and excesses of soul music in the early 1970s, died on Sunday in East Memphis, Tenn. He was 65.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office said that Mr. Hayes's wife, Adjowa, found him collapsed near a treadmill at their home in Cordova, an eastern suburb of Memphis, and he was pronounced dead an hour later. The cause of death was not known.

With his lascivious bass-baritone and flamboyant wardrobe, Mr. Hayes developed a musical persona that was an embodiment of the hyper-masculine, street-savvy characters of the so-called blaxploitation films of the era. In his theme song to Gordon Parks's "Shaft" from 1971, the title character is summed up in a line that has become a classic of kitsch: "Who's a black private dick/Who's a sex machine to all the chicks?"

(Furthermore: "He's a complicated man/But no one understands him but his woman.")

The "Shaft" theme won an Academy Award and has become one of his best-known songs. But Mr. Hayes's career stretched far beyond soundtracks. For much of the 1960s and into the '70s he was one of the principal songwriters and performers for Stax Records, the trailblazing Memphis R&B label, and in the 1990s he revived his career by providing the voice for the amorous and wise Chef on the cable television show "South Park."

Isaac Hayes was born Aug. 20, 1942, in a tin shack in rural Covington, Tenn., to a mother who died early and a father who left home. He was raised largely by his grandparents, and worked in cotton fields while going to school. He began playing in local bands, and by early 1964, when he was 21, he was working as a backup musician for Stax. His first session was with Otis Redding.

Soon he began writing songs with David Porter, and their music — numbers like "Soul Man" and Hold On, I'm Comin' " for Sam and Dave, and "B-A-B-Y" for Carla Thomas — came to embody the Stax aesthetic. It was tight, catchy pop, but full of sweat and grit, a proudly unpolished Southern alternative to Motown.

By the late 1960s Mr. Hayes was stepping out as a solo artist, and his reputation grew as much for his dress as for his music. The cover of his 1969 album, "Hot Buttered Soul," pictured him in customary style: shaved head, dark shades, gold chains, bare chest. The album was similarly eccentric, consisting of just four songs, including lengthy, elaborate versions of Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "Walk On By" and Jimmy Webb's "By the Time I Get to Phoenix." It also included spoken segments that he called raps, and the album became one of his biggest hits, reaching No. 8.

When he was approached to create the score to "Shaft," one of the first blaxploitation films, Mr. Hayes said he also wanted the lead role. The part went to Richard Roundtree, but Mr. Hayes recorded the music anyway. It was done in four days with several members of the Bar-Kays, one of the house bands at Stax.

With a cymbal pattern borrowed from Redding's "Try a Little Tenderness," which Mr. Hayes had arranged, the song layered funk guitars, horns, woodwinds and strings, prefiguring disco. It became a No. 1 hit.

In 1971 he followed up the "Shaft" soundtrack with "Black Moses," a double album that was another ambitious expansion of the vocabulary of soul music. In its original issue, the cover folded out to reveal a portrait of Mr. Hayes in crucifix form.

In the mid-'70s Mr. Hayes's finances collapsed and his music turned explicitly to disco, which turned out to be a career dead end. Through the 1970s and into the '90s he acted in several films, including "Escape From New York" in 1981 and the spoof "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka" in 1988. His music from this era sold poorly, but his career revived in 1997 when he began playing Chef on "South Park." A Scientologist, he quit the show in 2006, saying that he had been offended by an episode that ridiculed Tom Cruise and other prominent Scientologists. He also had a radio show in New York in the 1990s.

Mr. Hayes had health problems in recent years but had continued to tour and work occasionally in film (he had a role in "Soul Men," a comedy set for release in November and starring Samuel L. Jackson and Bernie Mac, the comedian who died Saturday).

In an interview on Sunday, Mr. Porter, Mr. Hayes's fellow songwriter, said that his friend was "recuperating from a stroke," but added that "in the middle of all that he was still trying to have fun" and had even returned to his birthplace in Covington to go fishing.

Mr. Hayes had been married three times previously. In addition to his wife, he is survived by their son, Nana, and 11 other children.

Haven't seen much of his other stuff, but his Blazing Saddles part was one of the great comedic performances, IMO.

81 years old. RIP.

Don't think we've a thread of this yet...

Derry obviously favourites, but one would hope that Donegal will put up a good fight in Ballybofey. The vital areas for Donegal are midfield and our forwards. We've struggled at midfield over the past few years, and if Derry get control here, it doesn't matter how well Karl Lacey does on Bradley, as there is only so much a back can do against a man of his class. At the other end, McFadden needs to have a good day, but at this stage it is anyone's guess as to the identity of the rest of the forwards. Kavanagh will obviously start (apparently had a good game at the weekend for Eunan's), while Roper seems to have featured heavily again this season (is that good when you're talking about a man who's been in the squad since 1996?). Apparently Devenney did well at the weekend too, but who knows if he'll start. Michael Murphy is still young (and presumably sitting his Leaving), while Leon Thompson got his jaw broken against Dungloe a few weeks back. There's plenty of other options who have featured under McIvor, such as Michael Doherty and Kevin McMenamin, but none of them have set the world alight so far. The likes of Toye needs to regain his form as well, as he has been very up and down, especially as the half-forwards will need to do well around the middle of the field.

Line-up for Donegal...(a lot of question marks!)

1. Durcan or Boyle?
2  Barry Dunnion? (he'll play, but where?)
3. Neil McGee
4. Karl Lacey
5. Frank McGlynn?
6. Eamon McGee
7. Kevin Cassidy
8. Neil Gallagher
9. Kevin Rafferty?
10. Rory Kavanagh
11. Michael Hegarty?
12. Brian Roper?
13. Michael Murphy?
14. Colm McFadden
15. Brendan Devenney?

Other possibilities: Christy Toye, Ryan Bradley, Kevin McMenamin, Michael Doherty, Stephen Griffin, Paddy McDaid, David Walsh, Barry Monaghan etc.

A big story over in the US this week was the surfacing of an ancient tape of Bill O'Reilly losing the head during a taping in his pre-Fox News days.

As always, some internet genius has put his own spin on things... :D

GAA Discussion / Donegal V Laois

Interesting game this in Ballyshannon on Sunday - I'd say there should be some decent football played. By all accounts it was a rather poor and lacklustre performance from our boys on Sunday in Tyrone, so we'll hopefully see a response this weekend. With McFadden contained by Gormley, we had little available in the way of taking scores, and apparently missed a number of relatively easy opportunities towards the end (although Tyrone did also).

Don't know much about the Laois men this year, except that they only have one point to date. Judging by the table, their problems are in defence, where they're conceding an average of more than 16 points per game (goals included) and scoring just over 13. We're scoring and allowing 12.5, which I suppose is no great shakes either. However, hopefully McFadden will find a bit more freedom this week and get us the two points we need to be safe. Apparently Devenney is on the way back, but I don't know if he'll be available for any league games. Not sure if its not time to move on though, as its been a long time since Devenney put good performances back-to-back in tough championship matches. No doubt he isn't helped by our possession game, but the lad is 31 now.

Jaw-dropping news here in NY as the crusading former attorney-general, now governor, gets caught in a federal wire-tapping prostitution sting (up to $31,000 a day these women cost!), on the night before Valentine's Day! Spitzer brought down at least two prostitution rings while state attorney general. Less than 18 months ago, he won the governorship of NY state with more than 70% of the vote and was being touted as a future US presidential candidate! Not any more. He has no choice but to resign now.

General discussion / Gabriel Byrne - "In Treatment"
February 10, 2008, 05:55:30 AM
Anybody stateside been watching this?

Its been excellent so far, in my opinion. Great script, excellent acting - you'd almost swear you were sitting in a theatre on Broadway watching it, given that all the action takes place in one of two rooms and its basically just two (or one of the nights, three) people talking to each other.

I presume, as it's Byrne, and most HBO things are picked up over there, that it should be on in Ireland soon. Definitely worth a look. Melissa George is gorgeous too! :P

Apparently some DUP yahoo called Paul Given ("an up-and-coming young w**ker" according to PZ Myers, the Minnesota biologist who writes the blog!  :o ;D)  wants Lisburn schools to start teaching creationism, as he doesn't believe in evolution and he feels "science points to creation but our schools are teaching a very narrow remit and many exclude alternative theories to evolution. I have asked the Council to write to local schools encouraging them to give equality of treatment to other theories of the origins of life and how the earth came into existence."

Tough draw for Donegal. Westmeath aren't easily beaten in Mullingar, and Donegal may be selecting from a weakened group again (there were five championship debuts last night!). We'll do well to come out of this with a win.

GAA Discussion / Leitrim V Donegal

First ever championship meeting. League meetings have been scarce enough in recent years too, although if I remember correctly there was a draw last season?

Presumably this will be in Carrick-on-Shannon. Leitrim looked well up for the game today and got some nice scores, so Donegal would not want to go out with the wrong attitude, especially after last week's hammering. That Maxwell fella especially looks a good player.

Should be a bit of craic around Ballyshannon and Bundoran over the next week or two!

GAA Discussion / Donegal v Kildare NFL semi-final
April 08, 2007, 05:37:00 PM
Should be a good game. The last time we met, in a 2001 qualifier in Newbridge, Devenney ran Kildare ragged, but we still lost by a point, 1-17 to 1-16, in an incredibly open and entertaining game. Dermot Early and Martin Lynch had great games for Kildare that day, plus it was the final game for Tony Boyle and Noel Hegarty.

Don't know too much about Kildare at the moment, other than we better mind the number of frees and opportunities given to John Doyle! Karl Lacey may get that task.

We struggled against Fermanagh today until Cassidy, Toye, Monaghan, Dunnion and McMenamin were introduced around half-time, but all those should start next week, along with Devenney, Paddy Campbell, Ciaran Bonner, and injury permitting, Colm McFadden and Neil Gallagher. Rory Kavanagh and Roper are there too, although Michael Hegarty may be hard to shift after the last two games!

According to the Donegal website:

C.L.G. Dhun na nGall is extremely disappointed to learn that the forthcoming Ulster Senior Football Championship 1st Round Match, against Armagh, on Sunday, 27th May, has been fixed for Clones, despite the fact that when the development at McCumhaill Park is completed, in a few weeks time, the capacity will be in excess of 21,500

The decision, by Ulster Council, will mean a round trip of over 400 Km, for most Donegal Supporters, yet for Armagh supporters it will seem like a home game as Clones is only a few Kilometers from the Armagh border

So much for home advantage...

f**k it, everyone else is doing it! :-*

Best Donegal players of the past twenty years?

I've no idea how to do a poll, so I'll just list some possibilities. McHugh is obviously the standout, but no harm looking at some of the others.

Martin McHugh - far and away the most skillful and intelligent Donegal player, probably ever!

Manus Boyle - the ultimate big game player, who, scoring-wise, almost single-handedly won Senior and U-21 All Irelands for Donegal.

Tony Boyle - one of the best full forwards of the 90s. How great could he have been if not for the succession of injuries?

Anthony Molloy - We're still struggling to replace him in the middle of the field!

Adrian Sweeney - Seriously on the wane by now, but one of the top forwards in Ireland in the early years of this decade.

Kevin Cassidy - still early days for him, but he's been one of the best half-backs in the game since he announced his arrival against Cavan in '02 with that unbelievable point from way out on the wing with the outside of his boot.

Brendan Devenney - An extremely gifted if extremely frustrating player. Unmarkable on his good days (remember what he did to All Star Brian Lacey in Newbridge in '01?), but seems to have lost a bit of pace and confidence in recent years.

Barry McGowan - Classy and extremely composed forward who was converted into one of the best corner backs in the game. Tight marker, very good on the ball (Karl Lacey reminds me a bit of him). Strangely underrated outside of Donegal.

Martin Shovlin - Legend in the county. Tragically ruled out of the All Ireland final in 1992 just before the game with a neck injury.

Noel Hegarty - Very versatile strong player. Tight marker, great on the ball. Used to bomb up the field to get the odd vital score.

Others such as John Gildea, Damien Diver, Jim McGuinness (never the same player after the tragic car crash in 1998), Matt Gallagher and Declan Bonner probably all deserve a mention. No doubt I've overlooked some!
