So its not just a straight forward purchase then...laptop only about a month old if that helps... i ge santa claus to sort it then :)

Bensars

Buy a Divx DVD player with a usb port frank. Just copy whatever you want onto flasg drive and play.

Actually it more depends on your tv. Many of them have ports that you can plug a laptop into. Have a look at the back of the tv and see if you have what looks like a standard pc monitor port.

Lads just to let you know, i left the laptop with a guy i know who fixes these things on a regular basis. He's very good at what he does but unfortunately he's not very reliable and when he tells you he'll have it done in 2 days that means 3 weeks...he phoned me to tell me that the HD was completely mangled but he was able to salvage most of the photos i had on the HD but unfortunately it had to be binned. He said he has installed a (almost new HD) HD on the laptop and has wiped the laptop clean and Windows reinstalled, he also said it was a good we laptop and was worth holding onto for another year or two.

His charge to me is £70 which includes the HD and all his labour but i still have not collected it yet as he is yet to call me to come and collect it...that sound reasonable enough but i don't know how much a 60G HD would cost for a loptop even though it is 2nd hand (better not have any porn on it...lol or def no Gary Glitter stuff)

The s/h 60gb disk he used probably cost him nothing, you just paid for all the work involved and got a good deal.

That lad is very cheap, there is a couple of hours work in all that.

Not really I installed a new drive in my mates laptop (44 quid for a 300 gig SATA), 5 minutes to replace the drive and pop in a CD to install the OS, no real work in that apart from entering a license key.
The hard work would have been in the recovery of data, for my mate I dropped the broken drive into a external case and copied what I could (was nothing of much importance he wanted). Really only 10 mins work too, the rest is waiting on the files to copy. Alternatively you can boot Linux from the USB port, if the bios supports, then copy accross all the files to the USB key. It all depends on how much damage the drive has though.

One point though as hard drives are so cheap now, it really is a false economy to replace it with a 2nd hand one. You will have no manufacturers warranty if something goes wrong and if it does out of pocket again.

Fair enough point but he'd fix it if something did go wrong with it...or else he'll meet B A Baracus...lol :D

He did say the HD was really messed up and was quite difficult or should i say it took him longer to retrieve the data, he asked me did i hit it with a hammer :D :D. TBH i thought a new HD would have been better and as they're not that expensive it would have made more sense but I'll just be glad to get the Laptop back and we'll see how it goes after that...

I am not too sure if my computer is on the blink, or the monitor. Is it possible to hook a lap top up to the computer to use the laptop screen as a proxy?

I think she's cooked. Sometimes it'll boot up so far, others it'll fully load and you can use it but the PC then freezes up, and won't let you do anything at all.

Any ideas>

Hard to say without other troubleshooting on the  machine itself...

Are there any errors when it is booting? Or when it is in windows?

If you can, check the system event log and post any errors you see

She could be overheating. Suggest you open it up and check the fans are blowing, clean out dust and make sure the vents on the pc are not blocked up. Sometimes in Bios you can check temperatures of your processor too.

My system idle process has been going a dinger for ages now, any reason for this?
