tough luck on Mark Allen to Ken Doherty in the 1st round, probably his idol.
i know it is a bit of a cliche for him, but if Ronnie can keep his head then he will surely be champion. If he isnt then 10-12 players have a really good chance. The Worlds bring out the best in so many players - Stevens, Ebdon, Murphy, Doherty, Hendry, Dott etc. It should be a really good tournament - looking forward to the first round battle between the BBC pundits Davis v Parrott. Also look out for Ryan Day and Judd Trump, 2 really exciting young players!!

how did doherty get to no 1 in the world. dont remember him winning lately.
think it has more to do with dohertys consistency more than anything. he never seems to get beat in many first round matches and tends to take all tournaments more seriously than a lot of the other top players. he has had many semi finals and final appearances over the past few seasons and this bumps his ranking up considerably. i think this is the case because like you say portmor he hasnt won many tournaments.

O'Sullivan's match-up with Ding, a repeat of January's Masters final, was the stand-out tie of the draw.
Ding has soared up the world rankings in the last two seasons, and is rated among the favourites for the title in Sheffield on his Crucible debut.

Any of you read the piece in the Sindo about Dubliner Joe Delaney, 34-year-old former talent who slightly pissed it away in last few years but battled back somewhat and has made it to the Crucible this year?
Could be a big story waiting to happen.
Or alternatively, he could go on the lash and get mashed in the first round by Matthew Stevens. :-\
ive never heard of him before but id say he would have a good chance against matthew stevens because he hasnt been playing that well lately
matthew stevens is a different player when he plays at the world championship what with the longer frames etc. he will easily beat delaney and he has got a good chance of winning it. even says it himself, he is terrible at shorter events but always plays well at the longer frame matches.

Thought Parrott was trying to pull a fast one at the end there. He said he was trying to move the red hanging over the pocket but it didn't look like he hit it hard enough if that was his intention. Davis looked a wee bit cool at the handshakes . . .

Snooker legend Stephen Hendry believes winning this year's World Championship would be the most impressive feat of his illustrious career.
The 37-year-old has won seven world titles, with the last coming in 1999.
"Winning any competition these days is so special but to be world champion again would be my greatest ever achievement," said Hendry.
"This year's world title could be won by anyone from a bunch of four or five - and I believe I'm one of them."
Hendry, who has not won a ranking tournament since the Malta Cup in 2005, started the season as world number one, but he is down to eighth in the provisional list.
"Being world champion is more important to me than being number one in the world," said Hendry.
"I hope that if my record of winning the title seven times is beaten, it's beaten by me.
"The number one ranking proves you are perhaps the most consistent player over one or two seasons.

"But I was number one for eight years in the 1990s and it doesn't hold the same special feeling as being world champion."
Hendry will be embarking on his 22nd Crucible campaign when he gets under way against Dave Gilbert on Tuesday, but the Scot insists he has lost none of his will to win.
"My practice regime is the same in time and length as that for any other tournament but I think when you are approaching the World Championship you unconsciously put a little bit more effort in," he said.
"You concentrate a little bit harder because you know the tournament coming up is the big one.
"At the moment I'm practising on my own. I used to play against people a lot but at this point of time it's more beneficial to me to play on my own. It makes me concentrate better.
"Sometimes, when I play against people, after a couple of hours, my mind is starting to wander, I'm not concentrating properly.
"But now, I'm playing four or five hours a day on my own. I put on my iPod, listen to music and play all day."

Steve Davis is an incredibly nice fella, though. (Goes into Fearon mode). I sat across the aisle and one row behind him on a plane once. Unlike Fearon (imagine what the poor man would have had to endure), I didn't bother him or speak to him, but throughout the flight there were people coming to him to talk, ask for autographs, etc. and he was not just professionally pleasant, but genuinely nice to everybody. He came across as bright, intelligent and a good conversationalist. His wife and two young lads of about 8 and 10 were directly in front of me and I've never encountered better behaved or mannered kids. A very positive (and not at all boring) impression, all round.
Couldn't stand him in the 80's when he was robotically winning all in front of him , used to love it when Higgy or White would on those rare occasions turn him over . But watching him do the commentary now he comes across very well and doesn't take himself too seriously .

who does people think will win this copetition? i wouldnt follow the snooker that greatly but i would always watch the world snooker championship. i saw the odds for winning the competition last friday and noticed that mark williams was 33/1 2 win it outright. are those pretty good odds or has williams form dipped alot from a few years ago wen he was always in the top 4 or 5 favourites 2 win it?

Seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry staged a recovery to end the first session of his match against underdog Dave Gilbert only 5-4 down.
Hendry, playing with a new cue, started with a 51 break to go ahead, but his form deserted him for long periods as the world number 66 soared ahead.
Gilbert took four scrappy frames in a row as Hendry missed a series of pots.
A break of 100 in the sixth put Gilbert 5-1 up, but Hendry made breaks of 68 and 76 as he clawed his way back.
The world number one will be relieved to have escaped with only a one-frame deficit after a prolonged spell of poor form threatened to derail his hopes of an eighth title.

Parrott potted a red but the only colour he could hit - the black - had the pot blocked by a red hanging over the bottom right pocket (as you watch it on the telly). He had no safety shot and Willie Thorne suggested he might pot the red via the black, taking the seven point penalty but knowing Davis would have an easy shot and eight points would be knocked off the points remaining. Terry Griffiths thought (and I agree) that the ref would have called a deliberate miss. As it happens, Parrott did hit the black against the red but neither went in. He claimed afterwards that this was what he wanted, but he didn't seem to me to have hit it with enough venom if he wanted the red to cannon away. Not one you'd see very often.

Ali Carter ended Stephen Hendry's dreams of an eighth world title as he sealed a deserved 13-6 win to reach the quarter-finals at The Crucible.
Hendry had put himself in an impossible position, going into the final session 12-4 behind and needing to launch an unprecedented fightback.
The Scot, who switched to a new cue just before the tournament, showed commendable attitude to close to 12-6.
But Carter clinched the inevitable win with runs of 35 and 20 in the last.

Higgins gained revenge for his defeat in the 2001 final
Ronnie O'Sullivan's bid for a third world title ended as he lost 13-9 to John Higgins in the quarter-final.
The Scot dominated the morning, going 11-5 up in the best-of-25-frame game to stand just two frames from victory.
After the restart O'Sullivan hit breaks of 48 and 70 as he took three of the first four frames to stay in the game.
A 93 break cut the gap to three frames but when he missed a long red in the next Higgins made no mistake and gained revenge for his 2001 final defeat.
From the outset, Higgins had the upper hand, with breaks of 91 and 73 as he opened up an early 3-1 lead.
But O'Sullivan struck back with breaks of 54 and 60 in a high-scoring match.
Higgins replied by notching the 350th competitive century of his career with a 110 clearance in the seventh frame for a 4-3 lead, although O'Sullivan won the next to ensure he ended the day on equal terms.
When the match resumed, once again Higgins was quickest out of the blocks, winning four in a row to go 8-4 up.
A 75 break gave O'Sullivan the next, but despite good starts in the next three frames, one of them with a break of 58, Higgins won them all to stretch his advantage.
A 62 clearance in the final frame of the morning meant the Scot had a long wait until the evening for the two frames he needed to secure his place in the last four.
It looked like nerves might be getting the better of him as O'Sullivan hinted a dramatic comeback could be on the cards, winning three of the first four frames of the evening session and ensuring play went on beyond the break.
But when they returned to the table, a missed long red let in Higgins and he made the most of his chance to advance to the semi-finals.
Shaun Murphy won six successive frames in a brilliant comeback to beat Matthew Stevens 13-12 in the quarter-final. What a comeback murphy higgins final :-\

I'm going to plump for Selby. We saw with Graham Dott last year that the notion that newbies freeze on the final stage is an outdated concept (Hendry used mow them down, but in his pomp Hendry was a class apart). Higgins may have won it before but that was nine (!) years ago and the manner in which Selby overtook Shaun Murphy was most impressive.
The snooker is excellent this year.
I note a lot of people have lost interest in the sport - i think myself as it is not being dominated by any one player who clashes in interesting rivalries like in the 80s. To me there are just far more class players now.
I hope Selby goes on and does it - marathon stuff ahead.
Also hats off to eurosport for showing far more actual live snooker from this tournament than the bbc

Selby has won his first frame in ages. Badly needed and he needs to continue to add to that or this could turn out to be a hammering.
Selby has come out flying today, he's laughing with the crowd relaxed and has taken the first four frames in a row before the mid session interval! Hope he can make it go the distance, probably just a case of no pressure and he's playing well. What then usually happens is the comeback player starts to realise he has a chance again, the pressure builds, he starts crapping it again and blows it!
Higgins is on the ropes big time, could be a piece of history here, it's 12-9 now from 12-4 earlier, Higgins got in there and missed a total sitter! Selby back in with a great chance of going 12-10
Bout of safety at the minute, 12-9 to higgins but he's 8-56 down, a BIG frame.

Just called the session to an end, I'd say Selby will be a bit annoyed, you would have fancied him to add the last two frames as well the way things were going. He'll obviously be delighted with that session, but Higgins needed the break to get his head in order, he probably can't believe what's happened

I decided to keep one eye on Betfair while I was watching the final session last night and the odds fluctuations on the overall winner market were crazy. At one stage, during the 23rd frame, Selby's price went from 3.8 out to 7 – this for the man with the momentum, two frames behind and with 13 frames left. So I had a bet at 7. A few minutes later, during the same frame, he was back down to 4. So I laid him at 4, setting up a win-win. It's lovely when that happens. If only it would happen more often.
Jaysus 8 years since this thread was live, does nobody follow the old snooker anymore?? While it'll never get back to the 1980s interest levels I always regard the World Championships as compulsory viewing..
Current champion Selby gone already, Ronnie obviously will feature if he can be arsed... but I think Ding is playing well enough to win it out.

When you look at it he didn't really "bottle" too many - the 14-8 to 14-18 one could only have been done by Hendry. That was just pure awesomeness.

It was bad form to deliberately miss out on a 147. Fabulously talented, but hard to like. Paying customers would be entitled to be mad, asking what money was for a 147 and then doing that? Give the money to charity?
I personally think Hendry in his prime was unbeatable, whilst from a pure talent point of view , jimmy White was tops for me.

I played a wee bit of snooker in my time and Steve Davis was right. Anyone involved in the game of snooker knows when they have touched a ball during a shot.
Stephen Hendry also amazed that he didn't call the fowl on himself.
And the boys in the box (John Parrot and Denis Taylor) also speechless for a minute or so.
Not calling a foul in snooker is just not cricket.
Just watching bits n pieces of the snooker this year but I don't think it has been that good. I don't like watching matches that are all about big breaks but this year there has been too much safety n tactical frames

You couldn't like him if you reared him. In saying that Steve Davis had that persona also in his playing days and is one of the most likable characters away from the table.
After winning the World Championship, Selby looked as dull as dish water.
i had given up on watching snooker for a long time but decided to watch the end of it last night. Boring... i'll not be rushing back to see more of it any time soon. Selby barely cracked a smile when he won it ffs.
The problem is the players are too good anymore. In order to be that good a lot has to be sacrificed, including personality. What made it good in the past was players were more erratic. So you have see saw frames. Now you have frames finished at one visit! Also the Competition from other sports on TV was low, so snooker could be afforded more time from sports viewers. This has changed dramatically in the last two decades.
It all went down hill after drinking and smoking were banned from the floor of the Crucible ... those were the days.

I really do get the mental strength needed for this particular tournament and I think Selby was absolutely drained at the end.
I think he knew he wasn't fit for much more as Ding was coming back strong and only for Selby's flying start, Ding would have won.
Ding deserved to win because he played the better snooker throughout the whole tournament.
Selby dragged the game right down to a slow level Ding had not been used to and it worked.
This year a lot of players fell way behind in the first couple of sessions and there was no way back despite some valiant efforts.

Matchplay is winning frames especially tight tactical frames. Judd Trump can make 100 look easy but the best players play the right shot at the right time. Things like putting a ball on cushion when 50 up. Taking them away from cushion when 50 down. Going for a shot and leaving white in place that nothing on if miss.

There have been a few close finals over the years which equally would have been the best.. Hendry v White think it was the 4th/5th final in a row.. Higgins final v Ray Reardon Joe jonston's flash in the pan win and John Parrot who beat Jimmy White when everyone wanted White to win

Yes I was thinking that myself. He's been hoping for 33 years that people will talk about another final. To be fair though, Davis is quite a character. Such a change from his playing days.
Taylor said on commentary too, that not many players come back from 7 frames down in the final. He probably had a smug look on his face saying that, as he did exactly that in 85.
I never knew Mark Williams was such a personality. He drank all night long then. Funny on Twitter.
85 will always be my favourite because I had Taylor backed at 33/1. This years final was top notch also.
If you have never seen, or even if you have, Ronnie playing competitively he is in the NI Trophy final at the waterfront tomorrow against judd trump at 1pm. I don't know how many other sports have their greatest ever talent playing currently, but snooker does. I was at his semi today against Selby and the standard and drama was top class but the crowd was disappointing. Tomorrows match should be a cracker. So change your sporting plans and go watch a living legend.

I still enjoy the snooker even though the mates gave up on it years ago. The matches yday with Higgins and Selby were top class. Not the same as years ago but still enjoyable. Could do with a Ken Doherty or Dennis Taylor coming through again for added interest
Mark Allen the best of the local lot but I just can't bring myself to cheer for him. Something unlikeable about him. Not too disappointed he's out. Now if Selby could get knocked out as well I don't mind who wins it though preferably Ronnie wins but god knows with him.

Big fan of Joe. I remember he beat Dungannon's Paddy Wallace in the quarters in 2001 then Ronnie beat him handy enough in the semi final. Joe always was just outside the real elite level of the game.

Joe had a good run right enough. Everyone thought his semi final appearance was a bit of a fluke and then he did it again a year or two later
I managed a 38 break a few years back somehow. The cue ball was certainly not under control for the majority of it. Anyone played much 9 ball pool? Was playing a right bit before lockdown but it's a great game. And the big pockets certainly helps!

I coldn't cope on the full size snooker table at all. The cues are long and skinny and I was happy enough to hit the reds at all let alone pot a ball. I am quite handy on the small pool tables though.

Mcgill came across well in postgame interview te the incident. Storm in a teacup. Re quality, i much prefer these tense close matches than the heavy scoring ones where you know frame over once they get in.

He benefited from Ronnie being 'disrespectful' by winning those few frames. I'd rather watch Ronnie smash the ball around the table a few times than look at Selby stand over a miss for more than minute knowing rightly he was going to put the balls back like he done in a earlier frame.
It's not disrespectful it's a sign Ronnie was losing patience which was great news for Selby he just couldn't capitalise when it mattered. Ronnie missed so many long pots today but those last 3 frames were excellent and he deserved to win

The last three frames were glorious. I have not been remotely as tense and emotionally invested in any sporting event since sport started again as that last frame, and I might not be all year. It was a beautiful taste of normality but it was anything but normal, it was genius in action.

Another reason I'd have no sympathy for Selby is that there were occasions that he had a decent 60/40 chance on a pot but preferred the safety.

Nearly more importantly Selby accused Ronnie of deliberately moving in the background at a crucial stage in a frame when it was 13 9 or around that time. Bbc didnt have time to pick up on it so will be interesting to see if more is made of it, and Ronnies response.
Ronnies been on the edge all week but the beeb know rightly what theyre at gettin the interviews straight away a la skysports.

Today is a reminder of just how great snooker can be as a television sport and how great slow burning sports in general can be. Every so often something of the highest magnitude of drama like that comes along. I watched most of the first half of the football and that was thrilling in its own way but the snooker just took over. Today sort of reminded me of the day last year when the Cricket World Cup final and the Wimbledon final were coming to the boil at the same time and blew Kerry v Mayo out of the water. I like both that Selby was sickened - because I wanted Ronnie to sicken his hole -
and that he had the balls to say what he said.
It makes the game and makes for brilliant rivalry and needle. Old school.
Selby v O'Sullivan is an excellent rivalry because they're so different.
What happened there broke the rules of sport. Selby really had broken O'Sullivan mentally. Ronnie just continued to fling the kitchen sink, a failing strategy, and somehow it worked. That almost never happens.

Had to feel a bit sorry for Wilson there. Them couple of frames he lost last night with the red going in from the pot off the blue and the missed red in the last allowing Ronnie to get out 10-7 were crucial. Add in the few loose positional shots today and the writing was on the wall.

Ronnie's the best thing that ever happened the game. The greatest player ever. To achieve what he has done with the demons he fights is truly astonishing. I'm delighted he won it. A sickener for Barry Hearn which surely everyone agrees is a good thing.
Ronnie is a dose. He talks rubbish and says things just to cause a stir and make a few headlines.
That said I would watch him play every day of the week and would hope he wins so I could see him in action again the next day. An unreal talent. The speed in which he can turn a match on its head, the ruthlessness when in front and then he has probably been one of the best safety players ever. He would have more world titles if he remained interested. Best achievement was probably taking a break from snooker after winning 2012 and then defending the title in 2013.
Part of Ronnies Longevity is down to sabbaticals from the game. It's hard to know how many more World titles he'd have won if he went full throttle in the early years. Maybe he'd have won 6 earlier. But chances are he'd be spent now!

Barry Hearn loves it. Worst case scenario for him is Ronnie says nothing gets knocked out in the first round and the final is Mark Selby vs Stuart Bingham.

Ronnie great player, but I can't be arsed with his antics and complaining.
Since snooker opened up its closed shop, the scene has changed so frequently that players are in and out of tournaments, it's hard to build up an interest in certain players. People got so familiar with the players in the 80's that they were all household names, most of them were characters and everyone knew their traits and mannerisms. I think that's what's lacking in snooker these days.

Yeah I like a lot of people got a 6ft snooker table for Christmas but not sure any kids would ask for a table now. Also there used to be a load of snooker halls about that you would get a bit high from all the ones smoking a joint while playing that have all been knocked down and converted into flats or whatever now. Break building has got a lot better in the last 20 years due to better coaching, lighter balls, thinner clothes, heated tables, properly weighted 2 pieces cues etc. but the standard of match play has got a lot worse when you see players like Ken Doherty or Jimmy White still with an outside chance of making the last 32. Wilson is probably the best of the young players (under 30) but he plays some real amateur shots like potting the last red when he needs 3 snookers, hitting a tricky red hard to get on the black when he only needs the red. Things like that is part of the reason I think Ronnie is shaking his head thinking the standard of match play from the young players isn't that good.

Snooker is a strange animal of a sport. Although it's origins are in Amusement halls and Pubs, places that are frowned upon for a young lad to hang out in. The professional game with it waste coats and neat dress gives off a sort of snobbishness.
I remember seeing you those Friday nights Shane ! it was the spot to be, McGraths was arguably the nicest snooker club in the north, there was no expense spared there! Also remember hitting the Foresters on Scotch street as well when I conveniently forgot my blazer and the lip wouldnt let you in the door ;D

You obviously know more about it than me but are these types of patterns not more noticeable now in the modern age so players less likely to do it due to the risk of being caught.
Snooker has handed out a few suspensions in recent years Higgins and Bingham serving 6 months each. Stephen Lee was banned for almost 11 years and two Chinese lads were hit hefty not too long ago.
Do you think they're all at it and these are the ones to get caught or are the authorities nailing the minority who try it. The snooker fan in me would hope the latter.

Been watching it on and off during the day. Most of the match he was rubbish and only his opponent played 10 times worse he should be getting hammered. Amazing how he can just turn a switch and produce snooker of that quality.

O'Sullivan season summed up in that match. Erratic flashes of brilliance but on the whole inconsistent. McGill showed some composure there to clear up in them last two frames.

Neil Robertson beaten 13-8 by Kyren Wilson. Not for the first time he's come into the world championship in sh*t hot form only for his game to wilt away. He's only made the semi's once since he won it in 2010. Would love to see Wilson go on and win it now.

Hard to see the likes of Robertson, Mark Williams, John Higgins ever winning it again. With O'Sullivan gone, it opened up a bit for all of these with Trump probably being the next hardest to beat. That they couldn't capitalise doesn't augur well for future prospects. Wilson seems to have improved his match play since last year's defeat and has a fighting chance. Love to see Shaun Murphy have a go again, he has the ability for sure, but if he loses to Trump, you can add him to the list above.

In the last few years pool has become huge game overtaking snooker in Ireland. 200+ entries for Irish ranking events and over 700 at the All Ireland's held in the Gleneagle in Killarney every year. Not to talk about the many money matches that take place.

I used to work in Ranelagh in Dublin and I would regularly meet Ken Doherty there and play snooker in his club maybe once every 2/3 weeks. The club was during the boom to a builder who built apartments on the site.
Always wondered why Ken is up with the Williams and Higgins of the world. Maybe they're just exceptions

I don't like Selby or Kyren, so will be cheering for the others anyway. I put a fiver on Selby at 8/1 at the start to try and put him off, but would be happier to lose it than win the consolation!
The two semi finals are both evenly poised going into the final session and hopefully lead to a compelling days viewing. Bingham 13-11 up on Selby and Wilson vs Murphy all square at 12-12 despite Murphy trailing 10-4. Wilson will have be glad to see the end of that session so hopefully he can come back refocused tonight.
Bingham played some fabulous stuff last night to win the session 6-2 and if he can keep up that standard I would expect him to edge through.
Some turnaround, thought both Wilson and Bingham were nailed on only to be outsiders now. Murphy especially was 4-10 down

The 5 snookers thing last night as ridiculous. I know the very very odd time people can come back needing 5 snookers but it's maybe 1/100 or 1/1000. Should be a rule if you need more than 2 snookers it's frame over. Knock all that time wasting on the head
I sort of like and definitely respect Selby and his dogs of war outlook. Just sometimes he takes it too far and it all gets bogged down. Wouldve liked a murphy bingham final but hopin this ones good and is nip and tuck to the end

Seen an interview with him and he changed coach a few years ago after a slump in his game. The coach (also Murphy's coach) said all he needed to change about his game was his mental attitude.
Murphy took a chance on the red on the cushion when he should have played a snooker. C'est la vie.

Murphy was playing well but he just fell short in too many frames. To be fair that red was a hard shot in any match and in hindsight safety would have been a better option but he obviously was in a groove.
Yeah i suppose he was always gona go out on his shield. Damage was done in the second session yday was always gonna be a tall order after that

Watching him play over the 2-day final was like watching prime-Davis. He grinded his opponent down, especially in the Sunday evening session, and as you said, seldom left an easy opener for him. I think Murphy is a more talented player, potting certainly, but was slowly squeezed by the relentless pressure of Selby's safety exchanges. Shame though he missed that last red along the cushion, Selby was starting to have white-line fever at that point.
The red to the bottom left that Selby potted was superb - for all his safety play this was probably the shot of the match

There were certainly some comments on BBC over the last week or so about his slow play and Murphy in full flow is a joy to watch* but I didn't think there was any real bad feeling towards feeling.
*There was a clear up in one of the later sessions when he was under pressure and he cleared the last few reds and colours in such a way that I was just shaking my head. He couldn't have put the cue ball in better positions using his hand.
I quite enjoy him, being able to play safety should be applauded not ridiculed. The evening session on day 1 of the final that ultimately won him the world title was as positive as you would see...

See Mark Allen won last night. Tense final frame v Higgins
Watched the majority of it. A decent enough match now to be fair. Allen wasn't as big a home town favourite as some would have you believe. Higgins had a decent share of support from the crowd. Allen's unionist persuasion probably played played part.
I watched the last 4 or 5 frames myself (first snooker I've watched in a long time), I said to the wife as we were watching, I'm torn here as Higgins is a good Celtic man, Allen is a bit of a hateful hoor with some very unlikeable politics. Wasn't the greatest snooker but it was tense & exciting.
What has Allen came out with in the past chaps?

Allen could do with following his lead. I don't think it is majorly important to be physically healthy in snooker but from a mental point of view I'm sure he could do with losing a few pounds. Don't think he's the worst in the world but coming out to a press conference with his mouth taped up and things is a bit OTT. Wouldn't see Higgins doing that sort of thing

I always follow John Higgins (not denying that him bring a Celtic supporter may influence that lol) but I know the Allen family and they wouldn't be the worst.
I used to work in a betting shop in Antrim, and sometime in the mid nineties one of the Allen's walked in (there were 6 brothers) with this wee cub about 8 or 9 and introduced him as someone who would win a World Snooker Title.
I was in two minds last night, but found myself cheering on Allen especially after coming back from 8 -6 down in the final session.
Higgins seems a good fella but that match fixing scandal is unforgivable
I asked here before did anyone follow snooker closely enough to know was there truth to the match fixing thing and also trawled the internet a bit but never found an answer.
My memory of it was that the video was pretty damning but their defence if u was that they were in an alien environment in a foreign country and were agreeing to what was being said to give themselves a chance to get out of the room and regroup?
Nothing ever came of it and from a distance Higgins seems very well regarded within snooker?

Had brief look at draw yday. And the one above, both would suggest he plays bingham next if both win. Not easy....
Would more than likely have to beat Higgins, Robertson and Selby to get to a final. He was playing well a few months ago but form seems to have dipped.
In fairness very hard to call this year. A lot depends on Ronnies mood as usual.

I think most reasonable, fair-minded people can separate the manner of the publicity stunt from the legitimacy of the cause.
Especially when last month was the second hottest month on record and the 529th consecutive month of above average temperatures for that month.

It's billions of years old, it will die out eventually, the biggest problem is the population is getting bigger with more demand for things. Look at limiting the population growth worldwide, it would certainly stop the demand. Everyone wants climate change reversed but want their internet. their phones and holidays

It's been a poor world championship so far. No standout 2nd round match. Hopefully the quarters will liven the thing up. Selby/Higgins has the potential to be a classic though could be one for the purists.

White's cue action was just pure magic. The only player I could have watched all day and not got bored . Ronnie is a great player but he never enthralled me like White did
I'd disagree. Loved the match tonight Allen and yer lad. Brought me back to the 80s and Thornton, Taylor, Griffiths, Bould, Davis etc. Pure tactics and scraping a frame. There'll always be a White or Higgins but the standard is too high now. They wouldn't win a tournament today.

How hard is it to "miss" a few shots?
Hard to call one way or the other.
To be honest I didn't see much of the match so don't know how many chances Si had to win 3 more frames from 14-5 up but I just think it would be difficult to effectively throw 12 frames without raising some suspicion. Maybe I'm naive but I just don't see it happening at the marque event of the year. Smaller tournaments absolutely. Sure John Higgins should have been banned for a long time and wasn't.

Brecel looks to be finished. He is still 16-15 ahead but there only looks to be one winner now.

Totally agree. Snooker won't get half the pull when he retires. Carter v Murphy wouldn't exactly captivate me on a Sunday evening.
His documentary is excellent and well worth a watch.
Ronnie's Longevity is something else. Especially his bouts of boredom, Lack of motivation, Mental problems on his professional snooker journey. Snooker requires not only technical skill, but you must also be mentally strong. Most players lose this mental strength as they get older.
Despite the outward appearance that Ronnie tries to portray, he works hard at keeping himself at a top player. He realised years ago that physical fitness is important for to maintain a good game.
Snooker has hit a limbo in regards to new players bursting onto the scene. This can only be an advantage to Ronnie in maintaining his longevity.

I don't think its hit a limbo in so much as it has hit a brick wall. Look at the current top 32 I think there may be one or two of the Chinese are in their 20s and Brecel and then the rest are late 30s and 40s. There is zero new talent coming through. O'Sullivan and Hendry albeit generational talents were winning big tournaments in their teens. I think snooker has a huge problem and is showing no signs of rectifying this issue they have.
O'Sullivan is obviously the best of all time but a 48 year old shouldn't be dominating the game the way he is at the minute.

Like any other sport, it requires talent, dedication, perseverance and mental fortitude to excel at it. It's
milieu mightn't always be the most salubrious but the top players put in the endless hours of practise to get ahead.
It's easy to tire of Ronnie and his constant griping about something, but he's undoubtedly one of the greatest of all sportsmen, given his success, ability, longevity and still-primacy in relation to his peers, even now in the later stages of his career.

Any sport that (back in the day) you can play while downing 10 pints doesn't seem right..
At no point am I taking away the skill level, the dedication required, the hours put in and the mental effort needed
I would have been in the snooker halls back when I was young, loved it and would have been, ok, 57 break was my highest (not a lot lol) but fluffed my lines when in control!

Carter has went through a tough time with cancer previously, but always thought he was a dose as well both from the same area as well. Was hoping Allen would win Saturday night as Sundays final was a case of wanting both to lose!

There's actually very few sportsmen who say exactly what they want, what they feel, whenever they want. You don't have to agree with him, but he's always a breath of fresh air. No BS, he says it how he feels it, doesn't matter whether he's right or wrong, the viewer/reader is free to take it or leave it.
Watching the documentary on him now. He's full of contradictions, but seriously talented at this sport.
