I'm going to guess that once upon a time, a teenage McIlroy picked up one of his opponent's practice balls when they were chatting and joking on the practice green, and wrote "loser" on it. Which is normal behaviour for a teenage boy.

But hi this is the Internet, and stories without context are more clickable and shareable.

more like first round teebox of an amateur championship tournament when both discovered they were playing the same type ball........... but fair enough its normal teenage boy behaviour and the halo shouldnt slip........

Why would Gerry McIlroy mark his opponents ball? Or be allowed to? This is ridiculous. It just doesn't happen.

Orchard park

did I say Gerry did,

the bankroller did..........

Gerry just acted his normal vicarious father routine........

Can't compare them.

Rory is a superb golfer but tiger was phenomenal. If memory serves me right he used to be as short as 3/1 to win golf tournaments. And this with a field of 160 players. Mental

He was much lower than that, I backed him in the Masters, 2005 or 2006 & he was 6/4. Which I think was a record - he didn't win !
Yeah. I also remember one year at the start of The Open, the rest of the field was 9/4.  Tiger won it!

Yeah was the same year I think, at Hoylake

Did anyone ever dominate golf like Tiger did over quite a few years, the number of consecutive cuts made is scary isnt it.

plenty of domination in a sport for maybe a season or 2 seasons but for so long was truly amazing...........

Cant understand howour wee Rors is still compared to Tiger. Nowhere near his ability or drive. To be fair both are dicks, but Tiger is a more talented dick.

Is anybody comparing them anymore? I don't think there is really any question about the fact Tiger is way better. Having said that he has 14 years on him so Rory has a bit of time to win more but I don' think we'll say anything like Tiger again.

I think people forget just how good Woods was, 14 majors yes but 79 tournament wins and a stat I only came across a couple of years ago. He went 7 years without missing a cut, ridiculous..........

I heard Butch Harmon on the radio before the Masters, he was comparing Spieth and Woods.  He stated that Spieth, at 24 years of age, has missed more cuts than Woods has in his entire career.

some stat when using one of the top in the world as the benchmark against isnt it. Golf more enjoyable mow with more live contenders whether that means overall standard is higher or the same is a moot point

Franko

Round the time of Tiger's peak, almost every bookie had a separate pricing section called "Without Tiger Woods" or something.  It was crazy how dominant he was.

heganboy

i know that the metric commonly used is majors won, but I'm not sure that provides an accurate reflection of just how good Tiger was...
Never underestimate the predictability of stupidity

It was crazy how dominant he was in such a competitive sport hence why in my opinion he is the greatest sportsman ever

think i read somewhere that up to the point of his melt-down etc he had won more Majors than missed cuts.

On Rory, can i ask why people are not allowed to Dis -like him?

Do people have to like him because hes from Norn Ireland?

EDIT - should have read dis-like

After a bid of advice, as a complete beginner should I be looking at getting a bag and clubs from sports direct for £120 or would I be better off investing more money into a set of clubs?

The bag from Sports Direct possibly, but I would go to a specialist Golf Shop or Pro Shop and get a decent set of second hand Tailor-made Burners or similar. My son went to Andrew Morris in lisburn with a budget and they took him out to hit various second hand clubs before selling him the cheapest set.

You'll get some saying different but imo if you are a complete beginner then even buying the most expensive clubs you can will not suddenly turn you into a good golfer.
I'd buy the starter set and learn how to play golf first and then you can always upgrade if you like the sport and want to continue playing.
It always amuses me seeing players on the course dressed in the best of gear and with the best of clubs but who are just as bad at golf as I am  ;D
As the saying goes it's the Indian not the arrow.
When you think you're fucked you're only about 40% fucked.
