AA Gill basically died of lung cancer. If he hadn't been a smoker he could have lived another 23 years. Terrible waste of a life.

Had stopped smoking 15 years ago and boozing 30 years ago. To the outsider I'm sure he appeared as fit as any 62 year could possibly be. Not everyone's cupan tae but a  fantastic writer and journalist.

He quit smoking 15 years ago but yeah the cancer started in his lungs. He ended up riddled with tumours but only very recently felt unwell. Family noticed he was losing weight and after struggling to do a climb he did every year and feeling pain in his neck he checked it out. Dead weeks after. He described at as 'the full English' of cancers. Great writer. RIP.

I had a doctor a while ago who did tests on stuff like susceptibility to toxins. She told me that if I started smoking it would kill me cos I don't have any capacity to process toxins. Other people do and can live long lives even if they smoke. But fot those who can't smoking is a death sentence. Gill leaves behind a readership but also 4 kids
Smokers are 3 times more likely to die young than non smokers.

Appears to be unexpected?
I remember he had a horrible fall once that resulted in huge injuries to head and chest. It's a tough job. That's him and Pat Eddery gone in a short space of time. Two of the best ever.

I can't believe Ian McCaskill was 78.
RIP.

In the report on sportinglife, in between all the glowing tributes about what a fantastic jockey and person he was, it mentioned he has suffered weight problems, financial problems, was a troubled soul and a very sensitive person.

The Irish Times said he used to have an awful time trying to keep weight off as he was a naturally bigger lad (and very good rugby player in his teens) and was effectivly bullemic, which can have a lasting psychological impact.

No conclusions drawn in either report, and such inferences have been very wrong in the past when jumped to too quickly.

Extraordinary that he was only 19 when he won the Derby on Shergar.  And won so many other big races too.
Did the full story ever emerge about what happened Shergar, who took him, did they demand a ransom, did the purposely kill him ???
