I've been lurking on this board for a while posting under a different username that I've now retired. Less than a handful copped on to it.

By the way, the two Brians?

Would it have been tram?

GAA Discussion / Wrong priorities

I was at the Derry Tyrone game at the weekend.
During half time the Ulster council officially switched on the new flood lights.
I was not paying full attention to the speech, but I  heard 10 million being mentioned. I presume that this is the cost in having the 9 county grounds in Ulster flood lit.
I think this stupid. It was a typical Irish Spring night on Saturday, very cold with a chance of showers. Well in Celtic Park like many other grounds we have good lights.
However you have to sit on a cold damp concrete slab with no cover. Would ten million not be better spent on buying plastic seats, or building a stand in each ground that would seat 3-4000 people?

The price of admission has increased over the last few years, but the facilities are still well below acceptable. Clones/Casement, and others, come the summer it will be the same, sitting on a wooden bench or concrete slab (or standing) with most exposed to the great Irish weather. But sure at least we have the lights.

Yeah Like I said I enjoy the bit o aul banter with the Sperrin lads.

Jayus lads, we only give Derry half the Sperrins. We still have the biggest half in Tyrone.
We don't want them to destroy it all.
Also Sperrin the hamlet (well couple of houses) is on the right side of the border.

Fuzz - I know you were educated in Derry, but I thought you would have known, what them hills about home were called.
Anyhow I will stop this infighting with my Tyrone men and let the derry wans get back to inbreeding.

Tyrone by 1.

Lookin forward to it myself. Cant remember when we last hosted Tyrone in Celtic park. Anyone know??

Has there been one since the 1992 Ulster championship? I don't remember any league games in Celtic Park since that unless there's been a McKenna cup game.

I think Danny Ball's first game in charge was a defeat to Derry in Celtic Park. Not sure if it was in the league or McKenna Cup

While it would be foolish for the GAA not to try and get the best deals for itself, money should not be the number 1 motive. It should come after what package, presentation and coverage each broadcaster is willing to offer, a beauty contest if you will, not a bidding war.

With the exception of the North Derry and North Antrim coasts (which rely on the Moville relay), TV3 coverage in N.Ireland is almost the same as that as RTÉ on terrestrial, especially in areas where RTÉ is on UHF. In places like Tyrone, Fermanagh and Armagh city where VHF is used to receive RTÉ, another UHF aerial would be needed which would give the bonus of TG4 as well.

Tram (Bummer???) its not possible to get TV3 or TG4 in North Tyrone either due to the Sperrins. Its a shame that the GAA are more worried about money than getting the games to a wider audience. The promotion of the GAA should be a bigger priority.

Only problem is then you'd continuosly foul a poor kicker.

County teams and large club sides would not select poor kickers if it was to weaken their teams. Underage sides and small clubs would not select poor kickers in their forwards. There are very few teams that will not allow one of their players to take a free out of defence.

I think this would speed the game up, as there would be no throwing ball between players waiting on a specfic kicker to take the free. It would also encourage more short frees for those not able/confident in taking frees far out from goals.

I would like to add the rule, the player fouled must take the resulting free (especially at underage). It would improve the quality of kicking and would mean that fewer low scoring games would be decided by who had best free taker.

I wouldn't call myself an old codger on the board, but I remember when I joined a few years back there were only 5 or 6 Tyronies on board. Now there appears to be loads of us! I was wondering how many CLubs represented on here. I have added a few here and there, so shout if you're not on. Some teams have more than 1!!!
