Looking forward to seeing it, at Hound's convenience of course.

Thanks armaghniac...Hound, what was your scoring system and the length of your timeframe?  Diminishing points for previous years?  Or just one year by itself?

Thanks,  BH.

So what's the best way to rank counties?

League and championship performance together over a year, with increasing value for each win as the year progresses?

Say 1 point for league win, half point for draw, 2 bonus points for making league semi-finals, 2 points for league semi-final win, 5 for winning league.

Then 3 for each championship win, 5 for provincial title, 2 for each qualifier win, 7 for semi-final win, 10 for Sam.

Should a team get a bonus of 2 points for making a provincial final (hardly in Munster, but in Ulster it seems fair to do so).

The big question then becomes...who has time to figure all this out for 2006?  and 2005?  and 2004?

Let's agree on the points awarding method first, and we'll see from there.

So how does the club results circus actually work?

I had a gripe with one set of inaccurate club results and was told that the results were taken from hoganstand. Where do hoganstand get the data?  If they depend on rte's aertel service, no wonder things are screwed up fairly regularly.

Mind you, several years ago I had the opportunity to attend a Kerry County Board meeting that was trying to get results from lower division games from weeks and months prior.  Once I established a lot of our opponents had no delegate at the meeting, our win ratio improved a lot.  Ended up in third place out of 12 teams, when eighth was correct.  Made no difference for promotion or relegation, but that was the way it worked back then.

AZOffaly;

The county champions name the captain.  Obviously, if the county champions have a player on the starting 15, he will be captain.  If they have no player they can pick any member of the starting 15.  They are not obliged to name a player from the losing county final team.

Example:  1984 captain was Ambrose O'Donovan, as nominated by Killarney (county champions, whose sole panellist was Diarmuid O'Donoghue).  Killarney beat Feale Rangers in the County Final in 1983, by the way, and not O'Donovan's team (I think Gneeveguilla, Glenflesk, Rathmore, and Spa were playing as Eoghan Rua at the time).

The fallout from 2001, with Eoin Brosnan taking captaincy for the AI semifinal was a lot worse.

There should be absolutely no pressure on SK to nominate any Crokes player...but I'll bet there is open canvassing for it by more than one player's club.

Pub fodder for the winter is all it is...decisions will be made and stuck with.  If anything, it shows the integrity of Jack O'Connor in being able to drop his own clubman as his policy was whoever was doing best in training will start.  A high bar for Pat O'Shea in that area.

The method of selecting the captain has worked well for Kerry, obviously, so why change?  Not like there are models that are more successful.

No Kerryman has received Sam Maguire twice as captain, although Dick Fitzgerald was captain of two All Ireland winning teams (in 1913 and 1914) before Sam Maguire was first awarded (1928).  Dick Fitzgerald also lends his name to Killarney's Fitzgerald Stadium.  The fact that Dick died by his own hand has not been linked to his losing the captaincy, although many the conspiracy theory abounds.

The captaincy in Kerry can be a very divisive issue if not managed properly.  The County Board, team manager, winning club, and players that may be captain have a responsibility to get it right for the common good they are all interested in.

In sunny California (Northern) today.  Long sleeved shirt, no jacket.

AZ...hardly up to O'Shea to give the captaincy to anyone.  Thought the SK board decide that issue.  Basically, the decision will be between Sheehan and Dec.  If only one of them starts a game, he will be captain.  If both start, I presume it will be Sheehan, since he has not had the honour before.  If neither start, SK nominate the captain from any other club (not necessarily beaten county finalists, Dr. Crokes).

I'm in Phoenix today, by the way.

In short-sleeved shirt.

Would the winners be expected to keep training hard over the next few months?  If the Crokes were to make it out of Munster, Gooch, Eoin, Cremin, and O'Leary will basically have no off-season, as the NFL will start in early Feb.

Hardly the best way to prepare for a stern defending of Sam.

Would be interesting to go back over the club winners and check how many players went on to AI success the same year.  I bet not too many.

Couldn't find the appropraite thread but this was closest. Read somewhere today that Cooper's Dr Crokes became the first Kerry team to beat Nemo in the Munster Championship. Is this true?
O'Neill, think it's the first time Nemo haven't won Munster when they were in the competition itself.

oneill,

Nemo Rangers have 15 Cork County titles, and have 13 Munster Club titles.  Apart from this year, 1977 was the only year they failed to come out of Munster.  The All Ireland Club series, played in spring of 1978, had Thomond College, Limerick as Munster representatives.

Some record by Nemo, in fairness to them.

No idea if Thomond beat Nemo that year, and have no idea on where to look for any such records.

California Kerryman here.

No club.

Too many memories to put one above the rest.
