General discussion / Avoiding rates on new house- NI
April 09, 2018, 11:29:45 PM
Anybody any advice on how to put off paying the rates on a new house? Appealed their completion date saying house won't be finished etc and now they want to arrange an inspection. They'll land out to find us living in the house as most of work done. I've no doorstep or wheelchair ramp access which someone mentioned could be an exemption? Anyone know of any other exemptions?

Bit of advice required. I rented a house in Belfast from June 2012 and moved out last week. The initial lease was for one year and I never signed anything to extend it but kept up the monthly payments. I paid a deposit of one month's rent at the outset. At the end of February I contacted the landlord to say I was moving out at end of March and to use the deposit to cover the final month's rent. She has rang a few times since I moved out but I haven't answered or returned the calls. There were a couple burns on the carpet where sparks had escaped from the open fire. The email below was sent today. Any advice on what to do would be much appreciated; don't fancy going down the legal route nor do I want to pay out £250. Thanks

I am writing to ask you to contact me regarding the damage to the living room carpet.  I have phoned you and left messages so we could sort out this situation amicably.  As you have gone against the rental agreement drawn up by UPS and used your deposit as the last months' rent I am requesting compensation from you for the replacement of the carpet.  When you moved in you asked could you use the fireplace and you were told you could if you used a proper grate and fire guard.  Clearly these instructions were not followed and subsequently damage to the carpet has occurred.  Replacement and fitting of the carpet will be £250 and I request you send me a cheque for this amount to the address above.
If I have not received any correspondence from you before 12th April I will be forced to contact my solicitor and take this matter further.
Yours sincerely

General discussion / Best time to buy Euro in sterling?
February 18, 2014, 12:36:17 PM
Bit of advice required. I've the wedding coming up in October and have to pay for it  in euro. Been keeping an eye on exchange rates but not much change lately. Some of the experts suggesting sterling value will fall in run up to Scottish independence. Is now the time to buy? Where would the best place to deal with for a large amount around £10k worth? Thanks

Heading on the Honeymoon at the end of October this year. Thinking of going to California/San Diego direction first (maybe take a trip to Vegas ) and then finishing off with a few nights in NYC. Any recommendations for these areas or anywhere else in the states at that time of year? What would the weather be like?

anyone on the board a member? what's your thoughts? not a bad gym but lacking a swimming pool and the parking isn't great. I suppose that's what you get for £18.99 per month.

Lads- bit of advice needed, I've an Ulster Bank account in Euros but do most of my banking in Sterling. Got an email from them today informing me that I'll be charged €4 a month if I don't keep over €3000 in the account (which I won't be able to do). Any other current accounts available with other banks which don't charge this? Is it hard to switch accounts?
