Armagh / Re: Armagh Club football & hurling

Back to Tir Na Nog's stunning defeat of Clan na Gael, is Philip Oldham the dirtiest club player in Armagh?

Point 1: The 26 county electorate invariably show their stuoidity time after time, continually voting for wnakers like Ahern and Harney, in spite of drastic failures, like Hospital trolleys, no clean water in Galway (Bertie is the Basil Fawlty of Irish politics).

Point 2: Sinn Fein has four seats in the Dail, which is one seat more than Michael Mc Didntdowell has personally and four seats more than the SDLP has (or ever will have in the Dail if they had the balls to stand), and four seats more than any Unionist party could win if they stood for Westminster in any constituency in England, Scotland and Wales.

Point 3: Combining Sinn Fein's votes in elections North and South, makes them a considerable force in Irish Politics. They have traditional heartlands in Kerry, North Dublin and the Border counties. As they develop and make their mark on Northern politics their vote in the 26 counties will only improve drastically unlike any of the other parties who are now at peak appeal in terms of electoral support

GAA Discussion / Re: Armagh V Roscommon 1977

In the 1980 semi final we burn't ourselves out big time in the first half, though we got one of the luckiest goals ever seen in Croker courtesy of Jimmy Smyth. It was the injury to the majestic Colm Mc Kinstry that cost us big time in that game, he was having a stormer. Martin Murphy's sending off did nothing for our cause either.

Remember how close Roscommon ran Kerry in the AI Final taht year?

Don't understand this criticism. Its a bit like complaining about the teams being in Irish in the match programme, or a few pages in Irish , or the Irish commentary on the All Ireland Minor Finals. It doesn't detract one iota from the show.

I do think Radio Ulster could perhaps replicate a phone in slot for fans after a Championship game on Sundays, as they do for Irish league soocer fans on Saturdays.

It was great to see the "Lowergun" ones exit the ground pronto when the referee sounded the final whistle on Saturday night. The first time I've ever seen a Lurgan crowd silent or stuck for words! ;D

I'm hoping for a showdown with Maghery...we owe them big time for the 1983 semi final robbery. ;D

Incidentally very impressed with Maghery facilities. Scoreboard with the time countdown is brilliant and far exceeds that at most County grounds. One point though, there's not much point in having turnstiles built when you can watch the game for free 20 yards on up the hill. And before anyone asks, I paid my fiver on Saturday night

Jimmy Smyth played his best ever game for Armagh and a real captain's role shooting three long range points to bring us back from the dead.

Also Armagh wore white jersies for both games against Roscommon in 1977.

Woohooooooooooooooooooooooo ;D

Yes folks, my wee club confirmed its status tonight as N Armagh's finest by knocking ex All Ireland club finalists Clan Na Gael, (Diarmuid Mrasden, Bumpy O'Hagan et al) out  of the Armagh Championship in one of the best club games I've ever seen!

Great all round display by Portadown, but special mention must go to Mrak Mc Allister ( unstoppable pace), Paul Carville (exemplary free taking in spite of a leg injury) and David Turley (ex Armagh panellist and there's worse on Armagh's current panel).

Where were the BBC Cameras by the way? Probably covering some shite match in Tyrone >:(

Jimmy Smyth, Tidsy Mc Kerr, Colm Mc Kinstry, all the O'Hagans, Diarmuid Marsden, Neil Lennon.... can you hear me? You're boys took one hell of a beating! ;D ;D ;D

A couple of points.

Anyone who knows the history of Irish soccer  knows full well that the IFA induced the split by its parochialism and only selective inclusion of siouthern born players. Read Eoghan Corry's excellent book on the subject for the true story.

In terms of one Irish team I would happily forego all political trappings, (ie anthems, flags etc) and concede home matches being played on an alternate basis at Lansdowne and the Maze, if it mean't one independent Irish team run by one independent association as the alternative to the status quo ie two teams largely drawing support exclusively from one community and two associations, one noted for its abject incompetence (and SammyG wants the FAI to come under this umbrella of incompetence) run currently by an Englishman who presided over the demise of Wimbledon FC.

My views are not hate inducing either...they're merely logic based.

General discussion / Re: Sweden get a 3-0 Win

Any truth in the rumour that the ref was from Dundalk! ;D

Good to see the Germans beating Slovakia on Wednesday night, it means effectively its a three horse race between the Germans, the Czechs and ourselves for the two qualifying places and it should make the collection of six points from the away fixtures with Slovakia and Wales that bit easier this autumn.

Looks like there could well be one Irish team in Austria/Swizterland after all next summer. ;D

By its introversion (ie unwillingness to participate in early World Cups), insistence on sticking with the three real British Associations, only selecting Southern born players for certain games, omitting them from other etc.Thats how the IFA occasioned the split in Irish soccer.

Also the IFA remains the only opponents to an all Ireland soccer team therefore coming up with a Football without Frontiers mantra is laughable

#12118
Sammy, the split was caused by the IFA, the FAI might technically have broken away but it was left with no choice.

Good to see you're not arguing against the accuracy of the IFA's steadfast opposition to one Irish team, hence maintaining the football frontiers

David O'Leary was actually born in London, though the family moved back to Dublin when he was a toddler

Noted the inception of this programme yesterday, encouraging foreign nationals to get involved with soccer.

Though the title was more than a tad ironic, given that the IFA has erected fronntiers in soccer on this island, by causing the original split, and point blankly refusing to countenance any debate about one ireland soccer side, league etc
