Is it time for the GAA to drop 'Athletic' from it's name?

Other than having a relay race in Croke Park a couple of years ago, where else do you see athletics promoted? Surely it's time for a name change?

The GA doesn't have the same ring to it, but surely the Athletic part is meaningless?

But it's not called the Gaelic ATHLETICS Association.
Should Oldham Athletic change their name too?
If you were any use you'd be playing.

Why not we are obsessed with change. I feel there are those who would take the Gaelic away which is another one.
As Bertie would say 'Da association'

'Athletic'  suits the state of Gaelic football. Most players can barely kick a footpass 10 yards . They run around like blue arsed flies handpassing . I am not surprised Meath gave up

Yes but Athletics was a big part of the early days of the association.

And yes, they should!  ;)

The word "athletic" in the name means sport rather than athletics.
The name is 130 years or so old and back in the day athletic meant sport. Someone can have a athletic build. Doesn't mean they run the 100 metres

It would be more politically correct to call it MatureMeatlessHam Athletic.

All we have to do is replace the word Athletic with the word Amateur.

There should be no problem(s) there.  :P

Maybe Gaelic football will turn out like baseball with two organisations with slightly different rules. A GAA with super fit hand passing experts, and a simple Gaelic Association with a mixture of small, skillful players and a few tall lads that can catch a ball in the middle of the pitch and run a few metres in between. The two winners from each association can face off each year in a World Series Final on a Saturday night in October.

Maybe we could call one hurling?

Is a 20:20 type game needed for Gaelic football? 10 a side, 15 minutes per half etc?
