A really great boxer - loved this quote

Stevenson passed up millions by not leaving Communist-run Cuba to turn pro, but expressed no remorse.
"I prefer the affection of 8 million Cubans," he once said.

Hardy

Hard to believe he was 60. One of the best boxers I ever saw.

Billys Boots

A true exponent of the sweet science - it was a very very good decision (for whatever reason he made it) to avoid going into the morass that is the professional 'sport'.  The man was an example to world sport, sportsmanship and technical excellence - may he rest in peace.

AQMP

Can't believe this!  One of my great memories (as a very young boy) was his destruction of Duane Bobick in the 1972 Olympics.  Bobick arrived in Munich with huge hype from the Americans as the archetypal "Great White Hope" and was touted as a future pro champion and had beaten Stevenson the previous year.

This is all I can find on YouTube for the moment

Good stuff AQMP. I can only echo the sentiments on here. RIP "Pirolo" arguably the best amateur boxer of all time.

Hardy

Arguably, you could even leave "amateur" out of that sentence.

Billys Boots

It is important to distinguish amateur-boxing which is a sport, from the professional spin-off, which allows Don King to practice.
