Eg Cork footballers Ô Driscoll
Galway hurlers Burke
Tipperary hurlers Maher
Go for a walk and have a few pinteens after.
Obviously, that hurling match shattered your nerves.
Tyrone = O'Neill
Delaney is a great Kilkenny name.
Reynolds is a very common Leitrim name.
I'm told one or two Reillys have played for Cavan, but I couldn't be sure.
Not surnames, but Kerry seems to be full of Tim's and Mike's. Does any other county use Mike? As opposed to Mick or Mickey?
Another interesting thing about first names is how different Patrick is across the country . Patsy up north. Podge in Clare. Pat in Connacht. Paddy up north I think. Paidi in Kerry. Padraig in Munster. Paraic in Connacht. Pa in Munster, especially Limerick Kerry and Cork
League of Ireland soccer teams have to include a player called Byrne. Fact.
Donegal usually have a Gallagher somewhere in there in the first 15.
Almost always a Boyle or a Doherty on the panel too.
Sligo - O'Hara
Fermanagh- Corrigan
Occasionally a Murphy would tog out for Cork.
I see that Cillian and Conor are joint top boys names in Mayo
Wonder what that's all about

Can't think of any O'Hara other than himself who has ever played for Sligo. Lazy nonsense.

Good thread - I would have thought that Cavan was the obvious one!! Has there ever been a Cavan team without a Brady on it?

Cavan is the obvious one OK, but Brady is not the most obvious Cavan name.
Reilly? Really??
Rarely absent.
Not necessarily GAA related, but certain surnames you associate with a particular county;
McHale, O'Malley - Mayo
Fahy, Burke - Galway
Connaughton, Finneran - Roscommon
Reynolds ? - Leitrim
Moroney, McMahon - Clare
Maher - Tipperary
Hennessy, Fennelly - KK
Kehoe - Wexford
Fives (great one) - Waterford (Is Ferncombe a common name there? Don't think I've heard it anywhere else)
O'Sullivan - Kerry
McCusker - Derry
Fagin - Dublin (Kildare?)
Reilly, Brady, McCabe - Cavan
Clerkin - Monaghan
Bonner - Donegal
Mayo - Dillon

Datsun, great midfielder. Looked like a tool going up for the throw-in with that umbrella hat though.
Delaney - Laois.
Mayo and limerick - Moran
Derry - Mc guckin
Wexford - Sex
Carlow - O flaherty

Wexford - Sex
I think you mean Kildare.
Otherwise they'd have had to start calling Wexford "Sexford".
Is sex not associated with Wexford?

Is sex not associated with Wexford?
Only in the good weather.
I stand corrected - sex was definitely big in Kildare in the 80s and 90s though whether it's the same sex as in Wexford I couldn't tell ye. Maybe there was no Sex in that Wexford team.
I'd say there was a lot of sex in Wexford in 1996.
Not the same sex though. We need someone from the model county to confirm if sex was on in the 80s and maybe the 90s as well
Mayo - mortimer
Antrim hurling only - mc naughton ,mc fetridge ,mc killop
Tipperary - Lukey, The Bear, Connolly Conneran Conron (I got it right I think) and What The Hell Is His Name Atall.
McCarthy- Cork and Kerry
O'Meara - Tipp
Dowling - Laois and Kildare
McMahon - Clare
If Turkey is Johnny Turkey, Germany is Fritz, England is Tommy, Scotland is Jock, and Ireland is Paddy, then Cork is Finbarr McCarthy.
Finbarr does match summaries for C103 radio and is a member of Glen Rovers.
I'm convinced he doesn't actually exist in real life and is an invented stereotype.

Mayo - mortimer
Kenneth Mortimer made his debut for Mayo about 1995 and Conor played his last game in 2012. Apart from them and brother Trevor I can't remember any other Mortimer line out for Mayo.
BOLLIX
always seem to a load of them playing for tyrone
Down - McCartan
Galway ........Sham (invariably from Tuam)

Kilkenny is Richie Power with a line going all the way back to Strongbow
Armagh - Christ.
I've never been at an Armagh game when no one shouted out his name.Sometimes referred to by his Christian name, and often his mother's name is added, and his father's who apparently was a Good Saint.

Olcan McFettridge was indirectly responsible for May McFettridge. Well, the name anyway.

Brilliant. Eddie Moroney is some supporter still though. He gets a lot of lampooning, but whatever bit of money he got from that video he gave to Aherlow GAA. One of the decent ones.

You could never doubt his passion as a supporter. I didn't know about his generous gesture, though. Fair play to him.
