Sad case of an 18 year old who took ill and died last year, coroner reckons it was most likely the taking of stanozolol that caused. He played rugby, GAA and basketball but I suspect like many of the young lads who are on steroids at the moment was doing it for image reasons. It really is an epidemic at the moment and I can't see it slowing down any time soon.

As an example, spotted at a gym in Derry this year:

What gym in Derry?? I'd call balls on that pic tbh. Though plenty of the juicing going on around these parts right enough

Most fellas in gyms are on some sort of steroid or pro-hormone, plus firing away at up to 10 tablets (fat burners) a day

Huge, huge generalisation. I go to the gym as much as anyone - never took a pro hormone in my life / nor a fat burner for that matter.

Depends what gym you're in!! If you go to a specialist weightlifting/bodybuilding gym there's a good chance there will be a few steroids flying around the place. The more generic gyms there will of course be a few meatheads but they would be the minority I would think!

Well that's just flat out nonsense.

I'm sure there are plenty doing it at certain gyms but I'd be at a big chain gym (DW) and there may be a few that I know would be at it, but 95% wouldnt..
None of us are getting out of here alive, so please stop treating yourself like an after thought. Ea

Depends on the owners of the gyms - they usually set the tone, even then - bodybuilding is not necessarily one with steroids - there are natural bodybuilding competitions and well, the other type. I'm not exactly sure how they are defined by rules - presumably there is testing etc.

It's like everything in life, if you are into 'the look' and aren't involved in any kind of physical contact etc and say this substance helps you get there, go for it - work away and knock yourself out in my book. I don't really see an issue with steroid use for that particular role - but if you are a tube, you are a tube - roids never made you that way nor is it an excuse.

Steroids in sport is entirely different.

The new big craze is crossfit - think the fella finished 3rd in last years games OD'd and was caught and now all I hear about is how crossfitters are all juicing - I know quite a few go to local crossfit speciality gyms and they most certainly are not taking anything.

Most people that go to a gym regularly or have an interest in sports know the telltale signs, but I wouldn't say its an epidemic by any means - I'm sure there's plenty of men and women taking a bit of ephedrine or clenbuterol daily to keep lean, that'll be virtually unnoticeable to the common eye but put a lad in a tight white t-shirt with ridiculously overtrained biceps and you'll get your stereotype. The only difference might be the type of gym they train in or even the way they hold themselves which owes to a certain generalisation, doesn't mean they are taking roids.

The Iceman

The sport of bodybuilding has always been about steroids...pushing the body that far, that hard needs supplements to speed up recovery in order to get the size and shape the sport demands today.  If you're not getting on a stage I see no point in taking them.  What they do to the body isn't worth it.
I definitely understand why some would take them.  I know a lot of lads in BJJ who are openly taking TRT and you can tell the difference. These lads are stronger and recover faster and at 40 I am a step behind where I used to be. Ask me at 50 and I could be joining them ha!

Certainly as you get older its harder to shift belly fat, your T is down and all it takes is a complaint or two about your libido to your doctor here in the US to be prescribed TRT.

I'm not sure how rampant steroid use is in all gyms. In the North any of the bodybuilding gyms like Warehouse in Portadown or Elite in Lisburn would be known for it but in a positive way. They're both bodybuilders gyms. Most are hoping to compete on a stage.  I don't know if I'd label it all vanity. pushing the body to the limits is what most athletes do in their respective sports...
I will always keep myself mentally alert, physically strong and morally straight
