GAA Discussion / What do you make of this?

Two schoolboys in Kerry are being told they can't join a club 1.5km away from their home.

Instead, the brothers - Padraic (14) and Colin (8) O'Sullivan - have been asked to travel 11km to play for a rival team.

The pair want to line out for Listry beside their home at Ballytrasna, Faha, Killarney but are being forced to represent Ballyhar-Firies as they happen to live within the boundaries of Firies parish.

The case against Kerry GAA's ruling is being heard in the High Court at present.

Through their mother, Christine O'Sullivan, the siblings are seeking an injunction restraining the secretary of the County Board, Peter Twiss, from preventing or restricting them from playing for Listry.

They are seeking declarations including that the failure to exempt them from rule 20 of the GAA bylaws, governing playing for one's parish, is in breach of their right to freedom of association under the Constitution.

The boys' solicitor says that if they don't get to play for their club of choice ["They may be technically from Firies, but their hearts and souls are in Listry"], they will take early retirement.

GAA Discussion / Death of Clare Footballer
June 01, 2011, 11:33:23 PM
Clare GAA has been plunged into grief by the sudden death of senior county footballer Niall White.

The 23-year-old St Joseph's Doora-Barefield clubman was a member of the Clare senior football panel for the past three years and represented his county in the 2011 McGrath Cup final against Kerry in January as well as the recent national football league.

The dual star excelled in both codes with his club and had only recently rejoined St Joseph's for training after recovering from an injury sustained on county duty.

Doora-Barefield club PRO Seamus O'Sullivan says: "The club is still in shock and coming to terms with the news. We still cannot believe the news about Niall. Such a young man, this is a terrible tragedy. He was so talented, a totally committed hurler and footballer. This is a terrible loss to his family."

County Board chairman Michael O'Neill adds: "Clare GAA's deepest sympathies go out to the White family at this time. Niall played with the county senior footballers this year and Clare GAA is in shock at this very sad news."

Clare senior football coach Micheál McDermott also paid tribute to the deceased: "Niall was a young lad that we had on the Clare panel for the last two or three years. What you got from Niall was huge honesty and commitment. It's a tragedy that a life as promising as his was cut short. His family has suffered a huge loss and our thoughts and prayers are with them at this time."

GAA Discussion / Sunday Morning Training
March 03, 2011, 11:09:34 PM
I totally loathe the concept of Sunday morning training. It seems to be the norm in most GAA clubs around the country.

Why do managers persist with it? Is it a test of character? A deterrent? A wicked way of ending one's Saturday night social life?

Most players that train on Sunday are generally hungover from the night before. So the session is just really about sweating the drink out of themselves. With trainings generally at 9am most players will be training on an empty stomach thus creating adverse hydration effects. That isn't doing a player any good.

Eamon Fennell Modelling Contract

It's turning into a good week for Eamon Fennell - on and off the field.

The Dublin midfielder's long-running transfer saga finally came to an end on Tuesday night when the County Board, ignoring a recommendation from the management committee, finally sanctioned Fennell's transfer from O'Toole's to St Vincent's.

And then came the news that the 26-year-old's television appearance on TV3's Take Me Out programme last Friday has resulted in a modelling contract with John Compton, a top Dublin agency.

Fennell told the Evening Herald, "I'm not familiar with the industry but I know a few people involved in modelling and they all recommended John's agency. He's a lovely fella and I trust his judgment, so we'll just see how things go."

Fennell is currently sidelined by a hip injury which has ruled him out of the start of Dublin's Allianz National League campaign.

If a player is of Minor age and his club do not have a Minor team but do have a Senior and Reserve team, can this player play Minor football for another club but yet still play Senior and Reserve for his own club?

GAA Discussion / Two Questions
January 29, 2011, 08:34:54 PM
These centre around GAA rules.

Firstly:  If a club do not provide an U-16 team for the season ahead and their players join a neighbouring club to get U-16 football. Do they have to transfer to that club or can they just simply register for that club without transferring and then return later to their club of origin?

Secondly: At what age group is a player officially connected to a club (i.e, the age group at which the player would have to get a transfer to join another club)
Is it as low as U-8 or U-10 or is it U-12 when official club competitions begin?

Any educationalists fancy giving a short overview of the current issues affecting education at the moment? Would be much appreciated.

GAA Discussion / Our Schools and the GAA
December 16, 2010, 04:49:48 PM
Over the past year I have been hearing many stories about the lack of promotion of the GAA in the primary schools and secondary schools within my county. Many point to the fact that other sports such as soccer and rugby are taking precedence while others say that football and hurling are being watered down and not being considered as the traditional top dog sport in their schools.

At regional and county board level, club delegates are pushing our administrators to do something about this problem by getting more involved within the schools. The administrators are telling the delegates that those representing the GAA can only become involved in these types of matters with schools if the school invite them in. They advocate putting pressure on Boards of Governors and parents of children in these schools to push the issue.

With a wider and more diverse curriculum now in place in our education system, is the GAA being diluted in our schools and and if so what can we do about this?
