Fair play to Ed Potts(http://gaaboard.com/board/index.php?topic=29555.8835) for making the 6 to 1 statement yesterday on both Scene Around Six and Good Evening Ulster which contain all the important news in the whole world - pointing out the political/cultural background of the main spreaders in the BT1 to BT94 area of Ireland. (And none of this oul mullarkey of - oooooh I want be a victim, it's sectarian to say that - is it sectarian to be nationalist? - right so we are trying to avoid that one and get to the nitty gritty.)

These are the 7 day figures on the day that Ed made his interviews. Board members can help identify areas where a team won a county championship and went out to celebrate and thereby eliminate the reasons for high rates in that BT. There are plenty of mentions of winning celebrations on the coronavirus thread but the posts are all over the place on a fast moving thread. The Derry City mainstayers on that thread have given explanations of the possible reasons for the high figures there in an area which would not be a GAA stronghold to paraphrase the Kerry commentator.

Taking Belfast which is BT1 to BT17:    BT1(18 cases) 2(4 cases) and 3(1) would be classified as Down Town.
BT17 Twinbrook Poleglass Lagmore with 261 cases is the highest.
BT11 Andytown Lenadoon Turf with 212 is the next highest.

In comparison:

BT4 in East East-East Belfast has 84 cases.
BT16 the home of the Ballybeen Flute Band has only 39 cases.

Obviously population density comes into it for some post codes. Also why was BT50 never built - or if it was why is nothing there? Same goes for BTs 58 and 59 and why the gap between BT82 and BT92. (just checked one there - BT58 was a mythical place where people could write to something called Child Support Agency which the internet says is now defunct.)

So since the GAA cannot take all the rap particularly in the Belfast and Derry areas and once again - well done Ed for coming out and saying this - sure somebody could do a paper on it sometime if there are any universities open again.
Terence O'Neill's - "give Roman Catholics a good job and a good house and they will live like Protestants" did not have a coronavirus clause.
Any realistic or credible explanations?

General discussion / Irish = Bad Bad Bad

First three stories on the news.

1. Belfast City Council (which has an Irish party as their biggest party) have been granted an injunction to stop any more bone fire building at four sites in the city. (by the way - what is a bon? - heard of bon-bons  - French sweets.)

2 Aer Lingus has cancelled flights to holiday destinations in September and are now finishing in August despite local people having bookings on the September flights.

3rd story on the news. 11 year old impaled on a metal rod at the IRISH Open Golf tournament.
Why are they having it here impaling our children? Do they not have any golf courses of their own?

See them Irish and the twelfth coming up and all!

General discussion / Poll: Ken v Mark
March 08, 2017, 11:47:36 PM
No doubt a lot of W.D. Flackes supporting posters on the board and the television news telling us that the "man who died was a member of the minority community." Then came a few GAA results late at night but Antrim club mainly and a team called Hannahstown featured (but no Lámh Dhearg.)

Nowadays Ken tells it as it from the heart whilst Mark has a more almost ready to smile take on it.
What do youse reckon yourselves?

Remember people used to look forward to this. Not even a thread.
Finished a while ago too.

First Saturday of October and an apple tart appears already in our house. Takes the second bite of it and there was a wee bit of a clink so decides to spit out the grease proof paper package and open it. Inside was a big shiny thruppenny bit. Yes - best day ever.
The wee sister touched for the ring in the barmbrack so it looks like she is getting married first - getting some sleggin over it too.
Still another four weeks of this to go. Couldn't bate it with a big stick. Brilliant.

Antrim GAA apologises to Casement Social Club

THE bitter dispute over the redevelopment of Casement Park has taken a fresh twist, with Antrim GAA writing to the social club apologising for its "unnecessary and ill-judged" actions.

Relations soured after the county board shut the west Belfast Casement Park Social Club ahead of the start of renovation work for a £77 million stadium plan - a confidential settlement was later reached.

At the height of the row, Antrim GAA instructed solicitors to write to members threatening legal action over £37,000 in alleged unpaid bills and members staged a round-the-clock sit-in when the club was served with legal papers demanding they leave the building.

Casement Social Club went to court and won the right in court to continue trading and last August it was announced temporary facilities would be purpose-built behind Owenvarragh shops on Andersonstown Road, just yards from the stadium.

County secretary Frankie Quinn has now penned a letter of apology to club members and outlined an series of undertakings, including to pay the social club's VAT bill, paying the £25,000 annual rent for the temporary premises which will be built at a cost to Ulster GAA of more than £500,000.

The planning application has been approved by Belfast City Council and the interim clubhouse will have "two bar areas, snooker room, darts area and ancillary space fitted out to the highest specification for the enjoyment of members".

It also contains recognition of "the value and importance of the social club and of you as members within the fabric of Casement Park past, present and future".

The development came as Ulster GAA prepares to submit a fresh planning application in its bid to transform the ground into a provincial stadium.

Earlier approval was overturned in the High Court in December after a judge ruled it was unlawful following a judicial review challenge.

In a humbling climbdown, Mr Quinn wrote: "We acknowledge that some of our actions up to this point were not conducive to the establishment and maintenance of a positive relationship, including the decision to issue letters to Social Club members over outstanding debt.

"In order to build trust and to enhance good faith between both parties I would like to express our regret for these actions to the entire Casement Social Club membership and look forward to working with you to redress this hurt."

He has also offered to attend a club meeting to formally express his recognition of the "significant financial" contribution it has made to "the ongoing development of of our county".

Antrim GAA have promised "to rebuild a meaningful relationship with the Casement Social Club" and Mr Quinn appears to have issued a blanket offer of support, saying the county "will not be found wanting in terms of doing what is necessary to resolve any remaining issues".

GAA Discussion / Egars Gone Missing From Starbets
April 23, 2013, 01:36:18 AM
Terrible stuff. Was looking forward to Round 7 of the Football but - nothing - and nothing since then.
http://starbets.ie/betting/gaa/

Egars waltzed through the Sigerson with fantastic insights and overall is a great man to evaluate and have on your side but has gone missing with no explanation.
Certainly starbets who one imagines and would hope were quite rightly proud of him have not bothered telling anyone what has happened to Egar's column.
Come back in some form somewhere Egars wherever you are.
Hope everything is OK.

Just came across this and wondered would there be be any Free State clubs and teams that have translations of their  names in Irish.  Would be interesting to hear from any Free Staters like Seafoid in his topic about names and clubs and how they came about in the Free State and their origins if any.
