I know if you pay for goods with a Credit card over the internet and you don't get the goods you are protected.  Does the same happen if you use a Debit card?  Am I hoping in vain?

Generally the case that credit cards come with slightly superior consumer protection than debit cards.

I always consider that when using a Debit card you are giving a direct link to your money in your bank account. When using a Credit card you are giving a link to Visa or Mastercards money. The Credit card companies are more concerned about protecting their money than your bank is in protecting you.

Almost sure that even if you pay a small portion of the total amount on credit card, that the full purchase is protected.  don't think you have the same protection with debit cards unless it's bank specific.
