Hurling Discussion / hurling qualifier draw
July 16, 2012, 08:31:52 AM
Reigning All-Ireland hurling champions Kilkenny have been paired with Limerick in this season's quarter-finals, after the draw was held on RTÉ's Morning Ireland.
The Cats suffered a shock defeat to Galway in the Leinster final and will be hoping to bounce back with victory over John Allen's men.
The draw also paired together Cork and Waterford.
Waterford, who were beaten in Sunday's Munster final, will be wary of a Cork side who claimed a comprehensive victory over Wexford on Saturday.
The semi-final pairings have been pre-determined. The winners of Kilkenny and Limerick will face Tipperary, while Galway await either Cork or Waterford.

Just interested to know if any ex-county players still play club football who are in late 30s as such. Can't really think of any within my own county as such

Hurling Discussion / Helmets
July 12, 2012, 10:39:59 PM
lads ye not think it is about time that county hurlers during the parade and when standing for the anthem remove their helmets to let the people have a look at their heros. many people outside the county don't have a clue who these players are. I took a trip to Kilkenny last year after they recaptured Liam and the craic in the town was unbelievable but I only recognised some of the hurling champions as they were kitted in the same shirt / trouser combo.

It would be a great boost for Hurling if youngsters could recognise the players.

GAA Discussion / Ways of improving the refereeing?
April 29, 2012, 10:42:28 PM
I like to see a referee do the following when reffing games

1. Talk to the 2 teams before the game and tell them what he expects ( although the rules are the same for everyone; everyone knows refs ref in their own way)
2. Tell the player what the foul is for vocally (so they can hear what it is for) and visually ( as not only the player knows yet again; but also acts as a visual aid to other players and supporters)
3. Have respect for the player by chatting to them if a bad tackle was made or if a contentious decision takes place.

Any other ways we could help the referee to help improve the games?

GAA Discussion / A rugby XV of GAA players
April 26, 2012, 11:26:11 PM
Right lads if ye had to pick a rugby xv of GAA footballers what would it be?

I'll start off here and give it a lash........................

1. Neil McGee - Solid as a rock. He would hold the scrum well.

2. Ciaran McKeever - Good hands for the line out; and would be strong for scrum time.

3. Paul Durcan - Huge size of a man, would take some muscling to knock him over at scrum time!!

4. Peirce O'Neill - Would bring the Cork midfIeld partnership to the second row with O'Connor. His added dynamism would bring a lot to the pack.

5. Alan O'Connor - Work horse in the second row. Would do all the donkey work for the backs.

6. John Galvin - Been about for a while so knows all the tricks. His strength would bring a lot to the pack and also his height a great advantage in the line-out.

7. Sean Cavanagh - His athleticism would bring a lot to the pack and he would no doubt help himself to a few tries in the process.

8. Fergal Doherty - Still playing club football for Bellaghy. He would be the battering ram at the back of the scrum and would take some stopping when running with ball in hand.

9. Stephen Cluxton - The ultimate man to get the backs going with his great passing and intelligent play

10.  Pauric Joyce - Good job he is still playing as their is no one about who could fill this berth as well. No problem for the oul penalties; 3 points in the bag every time. He kicking from hand would put the team in great positions all day long.

11. Darran O'Sullivan - Quick as lightning and very elusive on the wing. Would score try after try

12. Eamonn O'Hara - Mightn't have the legs anymore but his strength in the tackle and intelligence would prove the midfield hard to break through. He is a crafty oul sort too so no doubt will steal a few balls in the ruck!

13. Bernard Brogan - Had to fit in somewhere; and I think he would do a better job than BOD if he put his mind to it!

14.Dennis Glennon - Quick as can be and his the physique to brush off the would be tacklers.

15. Benny Coulter - great under high ball and his speed could definitively cut holes in the opposition defences.

GAA Discussion / Our GAA traditions
April 24, 2012, 12:15:52 PM
Just after reading Paddy Heaney's excellent 'against the breeze' column in the Irish News and this week he was n about tradition. He states that things shuld nt change like the parade, amhrain na bhfain, umpire's clothing and such forth he goes onto slate things such as Hector OhEochagain's interviews during last years all-ireland when with all the noise ye couldn't hear ye speak to the ones beside ye and gain their opinion on the match.

Just wondering lads and lassies what tradtitions would ye keep or get rid of......................

A US soldier in Afghanistan opened fire on civilians after walking off his base in the southern province of Kandahar.
Provincial governor Tooryalai Weesa told the BBC 10 people had died and five were wounded in the shooting.
The soldier is reported to have suffered a nervous breakdown before the attack. He has since surrended himself to the US military authorities.
Nato said US and Afghan officials were working together to investigate the "deeply regrettable incident".
Local tribal leaders said women, children and men were among the dead in Panjwai district.
Protests over the attack have broken out in Panjwai district, and travel to the area should be avoided, the US embassy in Kabul has said.

Anyone else any 'Bankers'??
#120
Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) boss Stephen Hester is to receive a bonus of almost £1m.
RBS announced on Thursday that Mr Hester is to get £963,000 in shares based on the bank's closing share price on Wednesday 25 January 2012.
The bank said the bonus was for "substantial progress in making RBS safer, rebuilding performance in many businesses and improving customer service and support".
RBS is 82% owned by the taxpayer.
BBC business editor Robert Peston has learnt that the bonus came due to fears about resignations on the RBS board.
"I am reliably told that they feared Mr Hester and much of the board would have quit, if the payment had been vetoed by the government as the majority shareholder," said our business editor.
"Hester's pay reflects the significant contribution he has made towards rebuilding RBS in 2011," UK Financial Investments (UKFI) told BBC business editor Robert Peston.
UKFI was set up in 2008 to manage taxpayers' shareholdings in Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds after they had to be rescued.
Out of touch
The decision has prompted outrage amongst union leaders.
"Reports that the Royal Bank of Scotland chief executive is to take £1m from taxpayers' pockets as a bonus are utterly disgusting and offensive to every working person across the country," said David Fleming, Unite national officer.
Chris Leslie, the Labour Party shadow financial secretary to the Treasury gave a statement in reaction to the news.
"We now know that ministerial claims that the RBS board is contractually bound for years over bonuses were false. The board decides bonuses on an annual basis - and the biggest shareholder at the bank is the Government," said Mr Leslie.
"Anyone who thinks it is acceptable to award a bonus of almost £1m on top of a basic salary of £1.2m in these tough times is desperately out of touch with millions of people who are struggling to make ends meet."
'Progressing well'
The decision was made on Wednesday by the RBS remuneration committee whose chair is Sir Philip Hampton.
Sir Philip said on Thursday: "The Board is aware of the difficulties in trying to reconcile the competing objectives of all our stakeholders. This is especially true on the issue of pay."
Sir Philip pointed out that Mr Hester was not employed as chief executive during the period of its collapse and subsequent bailout.
"His pay is strongly geared to the recovery of RBS, which he was recruited to turn around, having played no part in its collapse," said Sir Philip.
"A safer and more valuable RBS is in the interests of our customers, shareholders and the UK economy and we are progressing well towards this goal under the leadership of Stephen Hester."
Contractual constraints
The bonus has been decided as politicians have wrestled over how to deal with the issue of compensation at banks amid the economic gloom.
Our business editor said: "The governor of the Bank of England, Mervyn King, caught the mood [on Tuesday] when he pointed to the perceived unfairness that it was the well-heeled bankers who caused the mess we're in, but it's those on average and below-average incomes who are paying the price."
For the past two years, part-nationalised RBS and Lloyds Banking Group have paid no cash bonuses of more than £2,000.
The firm has announced thousands of job cuts, although it recorded a £2bn profit in its most recent trading period compared with a £1.6bn loss in the same period in 2010.
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has said ministers are "constrained" by contractual arrangements agreed by the last government at the time of Mr Hester's appointment regarding his bonus.
Labour Party leader Ed Miliband has retorted that, "if responsibility means anything", Mr Hester should not get a payout.
