Too much at once for me. Something had to give with the relentless handpassing but I really worry for the club game, think it should have been county only for one year anyway.

Quote from: Substandard on November 30, 2024, 01:08:24 PMI can't see how referees at club level will be able to manage all changes- picture the disputes over 1 or 2 point kicks, and whether one of 3 up strays into his own half to collect a ball?  From the start, I was thinking 2 refs, one in each half, and given how hard it is to source refs already, that would be a non-runner.
It will make the game look OK at county level, but there's a risk of some serious maulings.  I'd worry about club level, though.  It's a lot happening in one swoop.
Absolutely. I'm sure club refs can't wait for the new season.

The refs will be delighted as they've been given the tools to defend themselves. If anyone other than the two team captains open their mouths refs will be moving the ball 50m or handing out 13m frees.
That's all we need, refs on an ego trip deciding games.

I'd love to know how the percentages to pass everything were so high. Take even here as a straw poll, majority against most of the proposals with very valid issues and reasons why - which surely anyone who gives any thought to the implications of the rules should be able to see.

Dont want to come across as anti these rules in particular  but constant change is also folly when it's based on misremembering golden ages of football - that never really existed.

I also think everyone really overestimates how many really good games they've actually been at, and probably 90% of that enjoyment came from having a dog in the fight not the actual quality on show; how many times have you rewatched a 'classic' game and realised it was just OK? So, imo we really want that that dog in the fight feeling in every match we watch, but that's impossible.

Maybe 1 or 2 changes would have been ok, but this is now a different sport.

Hope to see a few county boards stick the middle finger up and keep the old rules.

Boys in the media that need to fill their wordcount to get paid!

Its the same as ever. A highly vocal minority that happen to be writing in newspapers have undue influence on the majority.

Some gas characters around here....
A "tiny vocal minority" when all the votes were nearly unanimous.
'How come so many voted for the new rules seeing as a majority of GAAboarders were against".
"Some County Board should refuse to implement the new rules"
Davy's given us a dream to cling to
We're going to bring home the SAM

It is though a little bit odd that the only unanimous support for these rules was among those who were voting in Congress.

Should have sent down a delegation from the GAA Board   :D

Jesus Christ, this is a new game. Can't wait to see a team win the toss play against the wind and literally just keep the ball for 30mins. The GAA have effed Gaelic football here. Il stick to hurling this year

Don't they already do that?

Milltown Row2

I see from some of the comments the ref's are looking forward to the ego trips of 50 meters.

It's simple enough, take the free move on.

As for the gobshites in the crowd, sure if you hear slabbering just move it on, ref's wouldn't know it 'exactly'  ;)  where it's coming from

Looking forward already  ;D
None of us are getting out of here alive, so please stop treating yourself like an after thought. Ea

Yeah but now we'll see it on steroids, teams will now pretty much play with the keeper up at all times playing with a wind, creates an overload and for example Tyrone will have Niall Morgan as a free man with less congestion just trying to get himself set for 2pt ers. Be like Christmas for boys like that.

The Trap

What people think will happen.
Goalie will blast the ball down the middle.
Big midfielder will catch it and launch it into 3 v 3.
They will win it and score.
And repeat all game.

This will happen occasionally just as it does now (as for Cuala just now).

What will happen a lot.

Teams will be wrecked after 10 mins initially (this will change quickly as they learn to conserve energy) and thereafter there will be loads of slow play and then play for 2 point shots.

Players will never be able to play the way new rules want them to for 70 to 80 mins. There is no sport like this new game even in professional sports.

Teams will still drop off kick outs to the half way line with the front 3 right on the half way line, especially against the wind, or a lesser team, to keep the score down.

Referees will be really tested at times and there are only a few in each county up to officiating games physically and technically on their own. Can forsee Referees being the first to throw their cards in.
