Eamon Law Memorial Tournament - Remembering a friend

The handball fraternity was rocked by the sudden passing of Kilkenny native, Eamon Law (37) recently, and the outpouring of grief and sympathy was testament to popularity of the Mullinavat player.

Legendary Kilkenny handballer, Michael 'Ducksy' Walsh has now set about organising an 'Eamon Law Memorial Handball Tournament', which will take place on September 29th and 30th next at Eamon's beloved Mullinavat Club. A draw will also take place over the course of the weekend, with prizes ranging from a flat screen TV, All-Ireland tickets to a weekend break.

For the past two years, Ducksy has organised a tournament in aid of 'AiserĂ', but this year he has decided to honour his former playing partner and long-time friend, Eamon Law.

"He was a true gentleman, in every sense of the word," said Ducksy. "I never heard him say a bad word about anyone, and he would travel the length and breadth of the country to play handball."

Eamon was the newly appointed PRO for his Mullinavat club and a very talented handballer. He collected a number of All-Ireland titles during the course of his career, including two minor doubles titles with DJ Carey, in both the 60 x 30 and 40 x 20 codes. Eamon also collected a 60 x 30 Intermediate title with clubman, Pierce O'Keefe, in addition to an All-Ireland Novice Singles title.

This year, Eamon partnered Eddie Burke in the 40 x 20 doubles, winning a Leinster title and narrowly losing out in the All-Ireland final to Tyrone. Eamon also partnered Ducksy Walsh in 60 x 30 in more recent times, and had entered in this year's senior softball doubles.

"The handball community have been very supportive of the tournament, and with the backing of the Mullivat club, Kilkenny County Board and Irish Handball Council, I think it will be a major success," said Ducksy.

The sport is making it onto cable sports networks over there and hopefully will break through to the mainstream (third tier obviously0 very soon.
