Quote from: Tony Baloney on August 07, 2024, 08:33:07 PMHudson-Smith will be sick after that 400m. Some dart by Hall to get over the line first.

A gold medal lost rather than a silver medal won. Must be gutted.

He'd a PB! Ran his fastest race. But as the studio experts said the acid builds and he hasn't a chance to speed up when the lad came late

He led for 395m of a 400m Olympic final I dare say he'll be gutted and will feel an opportunity of a lifetime slipped through his fingers.

There's a meme going around of some ginger fat dude sitting on his sofa eating a bucket of Wotsits while giving off at the tv about how the Olympic athlete shoulda done it better... ;)

Where did I say I'd do better or criticise him? As said he led for the majority of the race. As you are an expert on every topic on the board do you not think he would be gutted in the aftermath of it?

I was just explaining the meme, you've got yourself worked up.

There's not an athlete out there other than the winners who'd be gutted at not winning.

Nobody said he'd not be gutted. Think we can all safely assume he was. To have run a PB like that would maker it all the more gutting I think.

Quote from: imtommygunn on August 07, 2024, 10:16:04 PMDidn't think so. I never thought he'd have beaten James.

Really wanted Kirani to do it. He won his titles so young that it seems like he's been around forever and he's still only 31. A lot of miles in those legs though and while he'll be disappointed to have finished 5th, the encouraging time in the semi was his fastest time in 10 years. At this stage of his career would be very hard to start running 43.5 or 43.4.

Great to be in final.  What went before doesn't matter now.

New race on Friday. She seemed to struggle but maybe a ploy as pulled up as she was in control in 2nd place.

Surely they must have a big screen up in front of them to see who is where in the race?

A few falls in the steeplechase - nasty for the lad on the final bend.

Did she f**k pull up, she was going flat out as evidenced by her desperation dip for the line.

imtommygunn

I was reading somewhere that she is ranked 6th for the final. She's obviously excellent but I think maybe a bit to go before medaling though is young enough. I'd be more than happy to be wrong on that mind you...

Kirani James such an elegant runner and yeah was expecting more from him in the final. I'm sure he'd be disappointed.

Forgot the women's golf started yesterday. Just checked the scores. I wish I hadnt

Good insight in this clip of where's she's coming from and expectations of where she can get to. It's obviously been a huge learning curve for her last couple of years.

She did struggle in the semi but as you said, what went before doesn't matter. It was all about getting to the final and see what she can produce. She didn't seem very happy with her performance in semi so hopefully they have timed it correctly and there is a huge race in her but it will probably need to be a PB, maybe even into the 48s, to get on this podium. Paulino, Naser and Kaczmarek have all ran sub 49, the first 2 in particular look to be in serious serious form coming into this final. Even the like of Anning is capable of improvement and pulling out a low 49 performance. So, barring some of the other ladies having a bit of a mare, I think it will take something miraculous for her to medal.

Can she? I think in 4 years definitely, but Paris might be too soon for this young prodigy. Hope I'm wrong.

weareros

Lane 4 and having her main competitors to her right and in sight will be better for her compared to semi. She's still up against 3 faster competitors based on personal bests even with Pryce surprise exit (who wasn't feeling well). If she beats her own personal best, Rhasidat won't be far off gold.

Look-Up!

It would be a great achievement and should be the target to beat her own PB. It's the Olympics, it's what you save your best for. And it might not even secure a medal, never mind close to gold. The standard is so high and other ladies should be targeting their own PBs too. Put it in perspective, if Naser beats her own PB, she won't be far off Koch, and she was drugged up to the hilt.

imtommygunn

Sub 49 I think it is a great target for her in the final and if that happens anything could happen.

She was talking earlier in the year about taking advice from Michael Johnston (just on tv) and arm swings and stuff and how she didn't pump arms etc prior to that. It kind of showed she is maybe still a bit raw too - though a coach at that level should surely point that out you'd have thought. I think with those kind of things there will still be a lot of improvement in her regardless of what happens in the final.

burdizzo

Saw a table with Ireland in first place for gold medals won per capita! Some going.

Look-Up!

Absolutely, sub 49 would be incredible regardless of medals. Agree that she's raw, very rangy and still probably needs to grow into herself. It's why I fear Paris might be 2 years too early and I'd not be too obsessed with her having to medal. A PB would do very nicely, show great mental fortitude and schedule timing, and once she gets a bit more core strength and power into the legs, she could be truly something special. McClenaghan was older than her when he fell off the horse in Tokyo.
