Was just in at the St. Kieran's versus South Kerry first round game there in Cahirciveen. I have to say that for 20-25 minutes South Kerry played the best football I have seen in many a long day, and had something like 10 or 11 points from play to lead 0-13 to 0-05 at the break. The tacked on another point after half time, and then seemed to take the foot off the gas completely, making wholesale changes and the like, which completely disrupted their rythm, and allowed Kieran's to take a foothold in the game, albeit a very tenuous one.

It finished 0-19 to 0-13, but it's no exaggeration to say South Kerry could have scored 30 points tonight. Some unreal stuff altogether.

The backs were very solid until the changes, and Killian Young, Stephen O'Sullivan and Dennis 'Shine' O'Sullivan were putting in immense work, while John Sugrue and Brian Sheehan had a great battle with Seamus Scanlon and Kieran Brennan (an U21 panellist). Scanlon caught some great balls, but overall John Sugrue was probably the class midfielder on show, with his distribution, fielding and support play top drawer. Sheehan was a bit quieter, but still kicked his frees, kicked a lovely point from play and was very busy himself.

The forward line was, at time, scintillating. I don't usually like to get carried away, but I have to admit that at times there it was abbsolutely beautiful football. Half back wins the ball, hand pass out of trouble, Midfield or half forwards give low, direct ball in front of Ronan O'Connor, Paddy Curran, or Man of the Match Ronan Hussey, and they were lethal. They won everything, and either scored or layed off a scoring pass.

Dennis Dwyer and Declan O'Sullivan were heavily involved as well, and Dec kicked one lovely score, but probably set up at least 6 or 7.

Great stuff, and a grand way to spend a Saturday evening before a few pints.

Some weekend match reports

Darren proves the match winner as Mid Kerry stun Crokes

By Brendan Mooney
Mid Kerry 1-14 Dr Crokes 0-8
MID Kerry pulled off a big surprise in the Kerry SFC yesterday, sending well fancied Dr Crokes tumbling out of the competition at O'Sullivan Park, Killorglin.

It was Darren O'Sullivan's piercing run up the right wing which set up the goal that killed the game off.

The speedy Glenbeigh/Glencar man missed one or two sitters in the opening half but when he eventually got into his stride he was poetry in motion — beating a succession of defenders as he raced up the right wing. Then he held the ball just long enough before setting up corner-forward Kieran Foley who gave Kieran Cremin in the Dr Crokes goal no chance.

With the game heading into the final quarter the Killarney side now found themselves 1-9 to 0-5 down and when the injured Eoin Brosnan was forced off a few minutes later their hopes were well and truly lost.

Colm Cooper, who played the first half at centre-forward, assumed the more threatening full-forward role after half time but he had to contend with the attentions of two and at times three markers. This minimised his contribution to three points and just two from play.

Mid Kerry were physically stronger and more motivated with wing-back Fergal Griffin, scorer of two magnificent points, driving them on. In attack Sean O'Sullivan and Kieran Foley were a constant threat.

In the end, however, it was Darren O'Sullivan who made the big impact with the run that created Foley's goal and then he might have scored a goal himself with another run that took him to the edge of the square where he was brought down with a rugby-tackle. The ball fell from his grasp and when Donncha Walsh first-timed it over the bar referee Ger Lynch played the advantage.

Mid Kerry manager James Sheahan pointed out afterwards that with players involved in important intermediate and junior games the previous weekend he had just a few training sessions with his players.

He was also keen to play down the performance, declaring: "You will probably make us favourites for the championship and I will have to get those thoughts out of their heads," he said. "We still have a quarter-final to play."

Scorers for Mid Kerry: K. Foley 1-3, S. O'Sullivan 0-4 (0-1 free), D. O'Sullivan 0-3 (0-2 frees), F. Griffin 0-2, M. Burke and D. Walsh 0-1 each.

Hassett turns on the power for Laune

By Brendan Mooney
Laune Rangers 0-10 East Kerry 1-6
LIAM HASSETT'S best years may be behind him, but the Laune Rangers man showed he still has a lot to offer by giving a man of the match performance after being switched from full-forward to midfield at half-time in yesterday's AIB Kerry SFC third round clash at O'Sullivan Park, Killorglin.

Laune Rangers received a roasting at midfield in the first-half. with Seamus Moynihan defying the age barrier at centre-back for East Kerry. Donal Daly and Andrew Garnett were rampant at midfield and Mike O'Donoghue, at centre-forward, had the home side's defence at sixes and sevens.

Laune Rangers were already struggling when East Kerry caught them with a sucker punch after 10 minutes. Rangers had hardly stopped celebrating a Mike Frank Russell point when Andrew Garnett had the ball in the net at the other end.

It all started with a fine run by Fintan Coffey who had been brought into a reshuffled defence to replace injured full-back Michael O'Donoghue. Coffey took the ball deep into the Laune defence and laid it off to John Paul Brosnan who caught Garnett on the run and the Spa man put the perfect finishing touch to the move.

Laune levelled with points from Russell and Geoffrey Mahony but East Kerry were now well on top at midfield and two points from Niall O'Mahony and another from John Paul Brosnan sent them into the half time break leading 1-4 to 0-4.

In a bid to bolster midfield, Laune had brought on their injured captain, John Lynch and, after half time, Hassett was brought out in a further bid to stem the flow. He heralded his arrival with a long range point within 30 seconds of the restart. Mike O'Donoghue landed a free for the East and Liam Murphy appeared to have a goal chance when he fisted the ball wide.

But Hassett's contribution began to pay dividends. Substitute Pa O'Sullivan was narrowly wide from one his passes and another pass found centre-back John Sheehan whose shot was deflected over the bar by Colin Counihan.

Points from Mike Frank Russell (free) and substitute Pa Joy put Laune Rangers on level terms and the sides were still tied going into the final minutes when corner forward Shane McSweeney scored what proved to be the decisive point for Laune Rangers from long range.

Scorers for Laune Rangers: M. F. Russell 0-3 (0-2 frees), L. Hassett 0-2 each, J. Sheehan, P. Joy, P. O'Sullivan, G. Mahony, S. McSweeney 0-1 each.

East Kerry: A. Garnett 1-0, N. O'Mahoney and M. O'Donoghue (frees) 0-2 each, J. Sheehan, J. P. Brosnan, 0-1 each.

O'Connor makes Stacks pay the penalty

By Brendan McCarthy
Kenmare 0-15 Austin Stacks 1-10
A MISSED penalty 10 minutes into the second half cost Austin Stacks a Kerry SFC quarter-final berth at Kenmare yesterday.

Darragh Long, who scored the only goal of a tightly-fought encounter midway through the first-half, stepped up to take the kick, but saw his effort came back off a post and Kenmare goalkeeper, Steve O'Sullivan safely smothered the rebound.

If Stacks had prevailed, it would have been rough justice on a determined home side, who were never headed once they took the lead through a Paul O'Connor seventh minute free.

Kerry panellist O'Connor was in inspirational form for Kenmare at left-corner forward, scoring eight points in all, five from placed balls. He

was ably assisted in the by his full forward partners, Donal O'Connor and Liam O'Shea, who contributed two points each over the hour.

Stacks started Kieran Donaghy at midfield, but his influence, and that of his centre-field partner Daniel Bohane, was largely curbed by a man-of-the-match performance by Kenmare's Flor O'Sullivan.

The divisional side started the game in whirlwind fashion and were five points to the good with 12 minutes gone. Paul O'Connor scored three of Kenmare's first five points, two from placed balls and one punched, while Donal O'Connor and the tireless Mike Tim O'Sullivan notched one each.

Austin Stacks' first score of the game was a Darragh Long goal the ball slotted coolly into to the left-hand corner of the net.

At the break Kenmare led by a solitary point, 0-9 to 1-5. Paul O'Connor (2), Liam O'Shea and Mike Tim O'Sullivan got further scores for Kenmare, while Darragh Long (2), Graham O'Connell, Paul Hennebery and a spectacular Donaghy effort kept the Tralee side in touch.

The second half largely followed the same pattern as the first, with Kenmare always doing enough to stay in front.

Two quick-fire points immediately after the restart stretched Kenmare's lead to three, before Darragh Long had a chance to level with a penalty. His miss proved decisive as Stacks could never quite reel Kenmare in.

Kenmare rattled over four more points before the end, with Paul O'Connor contributing two.

Scorers for Kenmare: P O'Connor, 0-8 (0-5f). MT O'Sullivan, D O'Connor, L O'Shea, 0-2 each; C Brosnan, 0-1.

Scorers for Austin Stacks: D Long 1-4 (0-1f); K Donaghy (0-1 sideline), G O'Connell (0-2f), 0-2 each; P Hennebery, B Mangan 0-1 each.

KENMARE: S O'Sullivan; E Crowley, S. Curran, P Dwyer; D Cahalane, C Brosnan, DJ Brennan; F O'Sullivan, A O'Sullivan; MT O'Sullivan, J Healy, M Crowley; D O'Connor, L O'Shea, P O'Connor.

Kerry SFC: O Se sent off in Ghaeltacht defeat
06 October 2008

Darragh O Se was sent off for the third time in as many months as his club An Ghaeltacht crashed to a 1-7 to 1-14 defeat to a Paul Galvin-inspired Feale Rangers in the Kerry SFC.

After three months of inactivity due to Kerry's progress to the All-Ireland final, holders Feale advanced to the quarter-final with a strong second half display. O Se picked up two yellow cards in a five-minute spell after Rangers had hit seven unanswered points in the third quarter.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

South Kerry also made it through to the quarter-final after an unimpressive 0-9 to 0-7 victory over Kilcummin

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some good games alright MK in the 1/4 finals and big shocks over the weekend with Crokes, Gaeltacht and Stacks all crashing out.

I would pick Rahillys over Dingle in the quarters, Feale rangers v South Kerry will be close but I think Feale Rangers are going well and may have the upper hand Galvin is supposed to be flying. Captain in 2009 ?
Laune Rangers should have too much for Kierans and Mid Kerry should account for Kenmare.

I wonder will Mitchels "survive" the cull again this year.

The full draw for the next roundpity they could not split the games on Sat and Sun

Kerins O'Rahillys V Dingle at 2pm in Austin Stacks Park Sunday next 12th October

hopefully but i doubt it, probably come up against legion which will be tough but you never know. i always stick with the tralee teams km and i fancy rahillys to do well, they'll have another big crowd in tralee on sunday and should beat dingle after the tough game last w/e. failing that tho i have to go with feale rangers to beat sk cause i have a dream for 2009 that galvin will get there yet km! wont mention that on the main board for another while (tho i'm sure a few of them peek in here) in case any of them boys get heart attacks :D

Down to the last 4 Mid Kerry Versus their neighbours Laune Ranagers while Jack O Conner gets to meet his neighbours in the other semi . Mike Frank played well today for Laune Rangers while for Mid Kerry it was the non County players that did well . South Kerry got through against Feale Rangers who missed a penalty and a goal chance at the end . Declan O Sullivan injured his knee again I dont know how serious it is .

Kerry Semi Final reports from last weekend.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mid Kerry make final statement
Mid Kerry 0-13 Laune Rangers 0-5
EVERY bit as emphatic as the margin suggests, but significantly, no hint
of Mid Kerry celebration at reaching their first Kerry SFC final in 16
years.
The addition of Milltown-Castlemaine this season has injected that extra
depth, balance and quality to the mix for the underachieving division.
Having taken South Kerry to three games in last year's semi-final, they
won't fear facing them or Kerins O'Rahillys in the final.
With good reason too. Compact defensively, if untested on this occasion,
they can stand up for themselves around midfield, and have the electric
surges of Darren O'Sullivan in attack.
For long periods yesterday though, it was another Kerry player, Donncha
Walsh, who orchestrated this semi-final success. Starting at
full-forward, he was the maker and taker of opportunities in the first
period before returning to midfield for the second period, when he was
an important obstacle to Laune Rangers' best efforts.
In truth, Killorglin have fallen some way since the heady All-Ireland
club winning days of the 90s. Former wing back Shane O'Sullivan is now
building a new Laune Rangers, and they mustered only a single Liam
Hassett point from play over the hour. Most of Mike Frank Russell's
possession was won in his own half, and though he claimed four handy
frees, he was never close enough to Mid Kerry keeper Mike Moriarty to
bother him. The latter's only save of note came in the 22nd minute of
the game, when he had to parry a Liam Hassett effort on goal.
Evidently, there's been a power shift in the division, from town to
country. Mid Kerry's last appearance in a county final was a winning one
in 1992 against St Brendan's, but this final appearance has been a few
seasons in the making. Though Milltown-Castlemaine - who dropped from
senior last season - provided five of the starting 15 yesterday, Mid
Kerry have one unusual ingredient for a divisional outfit: team balance.
There may be three Kerry players but there's no dominating presence in
the side. In fact, it was one of the longest serving players, Keel's
Kieran Foley, who turned Mid Kerry's dominance around the field into
conclusive superiority on the scoreboard. One of the county's most
reliable club scoring forwards claimed five first-half points as James
Sheehan's side romped into a 0-9 to 0-2 half-time advantage.
A former Laune Rangers man, James Sheehan, is at the helm with Mid
Kerry, and moved quickly to cut down the shoots of a Rangers recovery
after half time. No sooner had Russell pointed two quick frees than
Donncha Walsh was repositioned to midfield.
The Cromane man's mobility was too much for a clearly injured John
Lynch, and once Kieran Foley popped over Mid Kerry's 10th point, this
one was done and dusted.
Their chances in the final? Well, Sean O'Sullivan needs to contribute
more. His two sublime points came when they were of little significance,
and while his passing accuracy is a joy to behold, he needs to give the
side more over 60 minutes. He's too important to be a luxury player.
No such complaints about Darren O'Sullivan, who finished with the same
number of points as his intercounty colleague, but was more purposeful
and daring. Clearly frustrated at not getting a championship start with
Kerry at the business end of the season, this is his stage to advertise
his abilities over a full hour.
However, perhaps it's the third member of the half-forward line who sums
up his team. Keel's Gary Sayers is economical in possession, intelligent
in distribution, and fittingly, claimed the 13th and last point of the
game. Neither Kerins O'Rahillys or South Kerry will dismiss them
readily.
Sheehan denies Rahilly's in thriller
South Kerry 2-13  Kerins O'Rahilly's 2-13
THIS compelling scorefest has put everything on hold - including Jack
O'Connor's thoughts on a return to the Kerry hot seat.
Nothing the Kerins O'Rahilly's coach will endure on the sideline next
season will be any worse than the agony of watching a Declan Quill free
shave the wrong side of the South Kerry upright with the penultimate
kick of yesterday's gripping Kerry SFC semi-final at Fitzgerald Stadium.
After 80 minutes evaporated in what seemed half the time, Quill had a 40
metre free to sneak the Tralee side home by a nose. His miss means a
replay next Saturday, with the added complication of a club play-off to
determine who plays Cork champions Nemo Rangers in a fortnight. If
O'Rahillys lose to South Kerry, they'll have to lift themselves to play
Laune Rangers on Thursday week. One can safely assume the watching Nemo
coach Ephie Fitzgerald would prefer to be playing the Killorglin outfit.
O'Rahilly's have always had footballers, but their resilience has
rightly been questioned in the past. Given the depth of their defiance
yesterday against a division seeking their fifth Kerry final in-a-row,
it's plain to see that Jack O'Connor has had a tangible influence in his
first year in charge. Of course, he is blessed with some outstanding
young talent in the Walsh brothers, David Moran and Barry John Keane.
Special mention too for young Benny Quill, the wing back and man of the
match, Mike Quirke. So much for talk of his lack of stamina.
It would be inappropriate to describe South Kerry as fortunate but they
spent a lot of time engineering comebacks yesterday. And their chief
engineer was Declan O'Sullivan, nominally selected at centre forward,
but a presence in every sector again yesterday. Their two goals both
catapulted them into three point leads, neither of which they held for
any length of time.
Both were finished by Skellig Rangers' Aidan O'Sullivan, the first
giving them a 1-5 to 0-5 lead just before half time, but by half-time,
Rahilly's had cut the leeway back to a point.
Two minutes after the restart, O'Rahilly's' Timmy O'Sullivan galloped
unchecked along the endline to set up Barry John Walsh for a Strand Road
goal. If anyone thought that would signal a substantial shift in
momentum, they were blind to the beautiful balance of this game. By the
41st minute, South Kerry's Ronan Hussey was impressing with two points,
and O'Sullivan's second goal for the division (2-8 to 1-8) might have
proved too much for many teams.
Did O'Rahilly's cave? Think again. Within two minutes, John O'Connor
pointed a free, and then Declan Quill sent David Moran bounding through
the heart of the South Kerry defence for a Roy of the Rovers finish (2-9
to 2-8). Tommy Walsh, excellently held for the most part by Stephen
O'Sullivan, set up his brother Barry John to edge the Tralee side ahead,
but though it took Bryan Sheehan three attempts, no-one was surprised
when he landed a 40m free to bring the game into extra time at 2-10 to
2-10.
The experience of four successive finals offered another potential edge
for extra time to South Kerry. But once again O'Rahilly's turned
convention on its head. After Hussey claimed a fourth point, O'Rahilly's
replied through Declan Quill and a wonderful score from David Moran.
Bryan Sheehan hit both posts within a minute, and though Denis Dwyer
equalised (2-12 apiece) in the first act of extra time's second ten
minute, Tommy Walsh quickly had the Tralee side back in front.
As the pace dropped, so did the players, several of them with cramp. In
the final five minutes, it was mostly about survival for Strand Road,
but even they couldn't resist the single-minded drive of Declan
O'Sullivan who was brought down for the 20m free from which Sheehan
forced a replay.
Few were complaining, save the County Board CCCC who had to gather in
emergency session to unravel the fixtures conundrum. As over 6,000
supporters filed away, oblivious to the biting cold, there was a
multitude of talking points, not least the 29th minute Kerins O'Rahillys
point from Barry John Walsh waved wide by the umpires but given by a
linesman. Now when was the last time that happened?
Scorers for South Kerry: Aidan O'Sullivan (2-0), B. Sheehan (0-5,
