Jamie on X telling us in many ways that he's going to tell us many things in the coming days, but he's not going to say anything today, apart from dozens of times telling us he's not going to say anything today.
I think it would probably be for the best to leave X to one side for the rest of July.

Lord rest them, an awful tragedy for family and friends, and by extension for fans.  Listening to the news, and such a sad tragedy in Donegal as well.  Life is fragile, and precious, and cruel things can happen that can knock you back and put you wondering about the world sometimes.

Quote from: paddyjohn on June 19, 2025, 11:58:27 AMBump this.

Hit the wall the other week. I'm slowly coming out the other side.

Walls do that, but every wall has the other side.  Keep er lit, good stuff. Things find their balance, and you'll end up where you are meant to be at different times.  All the best.

Struck from the record. The Smiths only.

Was that only a Morrissey single? Hadn't realised....

Yes, it was Morrissey, not  the Smiths. Great  tune though.

The Pretenders and 10000 Maniacs both do good versions.  Depends on the humour which I like best, but whenever one version comes up on a playlist,  inevitably I'll search one of the other versions soon after.

Quote from: AustinPowers on June 09, 2025, 02:35:35 PMI thought a Blur  top 3 would  have had more contributions given the  age demographics on the board

Next 3 will give a good idea of the age demo and psychographics of the board, and whether we're populated by melancholy shoegazing miserabalists, or scuffy lads who liked to drink big durty pints of black porter in O'Donaghues, or even scruffier long haired denim clad air guitarists with repetitive wrist syndrome. Bring it on, Austin.

Shite,  I would have considered myself cultured, deep and philosophical- instead, I'm a shoegazing miserabalist!!  The only reason the hair is longish is to disguise from the blank area so long as I stay standing!!
And as for OCS, while it's not a hill I'd be willing to die on, it's a slightly inclined area I'd be willing to half-heartedly defend for maybe 4 songs, So low making it worthwhile!!

Quote from: Look-Up! on June 06, 2025, 11:13:14 AMSome mess. America is a joke shop. Bannon rowing in with his two cents worth too!!! Some craic if he got his way, had Musk declared illegal and deported. That would mean the president hired an illegal alien to gut the federal government  :o . Oh the irony plus there's gotta be a few serious breaches of law there too. How would the MAGA brigade spin that one?

Phone call will be interesting. I don't know about the amicable solution bit. Two giant and extremely fragile egos collide. I'd imagine both beforehand would be expecting to control the narrative and a climb down of some sort from the other. Biting their tongue is something neither has ever had to do so first sign it's not going their way, they'll both be at it like travellers on youtube again. On top of that God can only imagine what's being whispered in their ears by their lackeys. Can't be anything sensible or stable.

You would expect there would be people in their ears saying this can't continue but then nothing has been normal over there for the last decade or so.

Once upon a time, you'd think that definitely.  Now, however, you'd wonder is this all orchestrated or choreographed, what's the endgame for either side, is it to manipulate markets, or is it deflection from Israel or Russia, and who is steering all this,  and to where?
And if it is a genuine spat, two egos of that scale, you'd imagine there'd be a fair bit of collateral damage along the way.
Nothing really makes sense anymore,  and you'd be worse for trying to make sense of it all!!

General discussion / Re: Regional Accents
June 05, 2025, 11:24:44 PM
I (with my quintessential mucksavage Ros accent) clocked in a good few summers back in the day TEFL teaching in UCG (it'll always be UCG to me, no matter how many iterations it goes through).
Spaniards in particular used to always be amazed at the range of accents, across the different teachers, the staff, taxi drivers and bus drivers, and so on, even if we didn't particularly notice ourselves.  One of them one time, very woebegone, reckoned we speak 100 different Englishes in this country.
Based on that, I used to always tell them the clearest pronunciation they would hear in English would be in Conamara.  Something about the way they clip certain syllables,  it always sounded very precise,  and not the typical weshtern sthicks and sthones stereotype.
I'm a long time in Offaly now- was very surprised day one that everyone doesn't speak Pure Mule.  In fact, in the younger generations it's hard to find a pure Offaly accent- could be that it's in danger of dying out!!

Quote from: AustinPowers on November 30, 2023, 06:08:24 PMSince learning of Shane MacGowan's death , I've struggled to pin down  my three favourite Pogues songs.

Been thinking of  a thread like this for a while , where you list your  three favourite songs by a band/singer , then  the absolute best of those three.

Then after a few days/a week or so , someone can select another band, and  we go again.

So , let's start with The Pogues. List your three favourite songs of theirs, then  highlight  your  absolute favourite .

Fair play Austin,  great work keeping all in order- I took a notion I'd go back and look at what was already covered, and was thinking,  Christ, 85 pages?  Looking forward to a few upcoming, my taste in music would be very broad, but at the same time shallow enough overall in that there wouldn't be that many bands or artists I could say I've listened to almost all or all of their work.  I like that looking at what others say often opens up a new opportunity that I wouldn't have known before.  A few humble suggestions to add to the list above when cleared might be Ocean Colour Scene,  James, Manic Street Preachers (was it my imagination or were they suggested and shotvdown?) and The National, but that mightn't be until the 30s!!

Yeah, I always thought Oasis for anthems, Blur for range.
My 3 would be:
-End of a century
-Coffee and TV
-Boys and Girls

If allowed to include Gorillaz, then On Melancholy Hill knocks out Boys and Girls.

I touch myself Divynls.

Solid college tunes.  And OMC How bizarre.
There's a lot of examples of bands or singers that might have had a couple of other songs that charted, but they're only defined by one song.
Maybe a two hit wonder theme would be in order?!
