General discussion / Help with College Project

Lads and ladies, would very much appreciate it if you could boost the hit count on this video for me. More hits means more marks. Thanks in advance!

General discussion / Google Wave
December 05, 2009, 02:56:26 AM
Anyone else tried this out yet? It really does appear to be the end of email as we know it. Effectively, it incorporates email, IM and blogging into the one application. Everything happens in real time, so if two users are simultaneously online, you can see the other person typing. Has some absolutely brilliant top of the range new features. For example, you no longer have to attach items- you just drag them from the desktop or relevant folder and drop it in the email/conversation/blog (or "Wave" as the collective term is to be known funnily enough..)

Have a few invites to give away. PM me if anyone wants them. It's a must for anyone even close to being a geek!

General discussion / Spotlight with Wee Willie Winkie
October 29, 2009, 01:04:26 PM
Surprised no-one has mentioned this, unless I'm just a tit who can't find the thread. If so, I apologise.

Spotlight on Tuesday night featured the caped crusaders Willie and Jeffrey in their attempt to get compensation from Libya for victims of the IRA. It was then repeated last night.

The jist of the programme appeared to be that Willie is a kind wee soul who has devoted his life to helping IRA victims, particularly in South Armagh. He even took them on a wee drive round Hackballscross and pointed out "The Godfather's" premises.

The show gave a short background on Willie, and he mentioned the death of his father when he was only a young lad, and which point the camera panned to a photo of said father. There was no mention of Frazer the Elder's UVF connections.

When Willie & Jeffrey were asked about compensation for victims of Loyalist and State violence out of a potential "Peace Fund" to be partly (or majority) funded by Libya, they both gave a stock answer that simply amounted to "Prods first".

General discussion / The Box Set Thread
October 22, 2009, 05:32:46 PM
With the advent of the box-set (not to mention high speed downloading) it is now possible to watch entire shows in a matter of weeks. I was a massive fan of the Sopranos and was recommended The Wire, which was the first show where I would watch two or three episodes a night. I'm currently steadily making my way through Deadwood, which I find fantastic. So, has anyone any recommendations for what should be next on the list?

So far I've been told to see:

General discussion / Wimbledon 2013
June 18, 2009, 09:44:29 PM
Every sporting competition appears to get its own thread these days, so I thought I'd get this ball rolling. Wimbledon is always one of the sporting events I look forward to more than others, and the last two finals were two epics that had the feel of history being written as I watched the telly.

Hoping Nadal is able to defend his title- somehow it wouldn't feel the same without both he and Federer. Despite his protestations, I don't think Nadal could be anywhere close to 100%, he was beaten comfortably by Hewitt in an exhibition match today in which his movement was apparently clearly limited. Can't look past Federer and Murray for this one, Murray in my mind being the favourite.

As for the women's, anyone of about six or seven could win it. Probably end up being Venus or Serena though.

General discussion / Australia/New Zealand
March 07, 2009, 07:15:55 PM
Lads, as part of a big celebration for finishing college, myself and a few lads are thinking of heading to Australia and New Zealand for the summer, with potentially ending up in Hawaii or the West Coast of the States for a few weeks. Planning on leaving in early July, and not coming home untiol the last week in September or first week in October. Could anyone recommend a route in which all the best sights and cities could be taken in please? I never did a J1 or anything, so am desperate to get away. All help appreciated!

General discussion / Attention OWCers
August 08, 2008, 12:54:59 AM
I've always had time for you on this board and whilst not always agreeing with you opinions on certain matters, I have at least tried to understand your perspective and have been more than happy to engage in reasoned debate. On top of that, I've frequently defended you in Fearon's crusading threads.

Reading a thread on OWC yesterday, I decided to post for the first time in a long, long time. The thread was about the sight of Northern Ireland tops popping up in unexpected places such as Ballymurphy and Twinbrook. Everything was nice and dandy and people mentioned that GAA tops could also be seen in unexpected places these days and that hoefully this was a sign that times really are changing. However, some tosspot from Cregagh decided to mention that he found it "repulsing" (sic) to see people living near him wearing GAA tops. This statement was widely condemned as it was generally interpreted that what you man was trying to say was "I don't want any taigs living near me", a viewpoint reinforced by his later statement "so what if a am a biggot" (again, sic, he wasn't that bright). However, one of your moderators/admins, Sickboy, decided to weigh into the debate and mention that due to hs family history in the troubles he too found the sight of GAA tops "repulsing" as the first thing he thought of were clubs named after convicted IRA/INLA men such as Kevin Lynch. However he went on to attempt to score cheap political points by bringing in issues such as Sinn Fein, and somehow, the current issue of teen suicide in places like Ballymurphy and Ardoyne.

I pulled him on this immediately (I doubt he even knows as his post was over a year ago) and pointed out that it was cheap, sickening and disgraceful to drag an issue such as teen suicide into the equation. Of course, the usual dismissal of my post as some sort of "mock indignation" or "feigned concern" arrived quickly enough, and then the topic got dragged into a GAA vs. IFA, "we endorse terrorism/we don't debate". My points and rebuttals were made both politely and articulately, and I was addressing everyone's question in turn, and was happy to continue to do so. However I decided that it would be wise to point out (due to the minority of mouthpieces on the OWC board who would have no interest in debate, but merely give me abuse or call me "IRA supporting scum") that any sort of personal abuse directed against me or my close associates would be taken very seriously. BANG! In comes your Commander-In-Chief and asks me was I making a threat agaisnt the board. I believe my response was something along the lines of "I'd call it friendly advice" and that I thought the days of anyone dissenting getting slapped with an immediate ban were over. Apparently not, as my account has been temporarily suspended and I won't be free to continue the discussion untilm oh let's see, the 5th of may, 2011....

Clear, concise and articulate. Free of point scoring or abuse. Yet I still get banned? Like I said, I thought those days were over. I had grudging respect for certain OWC posters who stay away from this board, but alas no more. A shocking display of intolerance. I really hope this isn't a view shared by the majority of the "other side".

General discussion / Torrent Help Please
July 15, 2008, 05:23:33 PM
I recently downloaded a torrent from torrentreactor using BitTorrent but when I went to play the file, it contacted BitTorrent to download media usage rights and I got a message saying "Sorry, this file is currently only available to users in the United States."

Is there anyway around it?

Any help much appreciated, don't want to have to download it all over again!

General discussion / Pierce Brosnan is Taffin
July 07, 2008, 11:39:27 PM
Saw this film on BBC a few months ago and couldn't stop laughing the entire way through, but didn't think of asking about it on here. Has anyone ever seen it?!? I'm not sure if it's a mistake or not! Every Irish actor under the sun was in it apparently, from Fair City's Bella to Father Jack!

Anyway, here'e the trailer, which basically gives away the entire film.

General discussion / Summer Jobs In Dublin
April 22, 2008, 12:59:44 PM
Lads, am looking for a summer job in the big smoke as I have no wish to be paying three months rent on a dingy flat whilst staying in Belfast. I'm studying Mechanical Engineering and internships would be preferable, no matter what the field. For example, I've just applied for a media sales internship with Google! Anything even close to reasonably well paid would be welcome! Thanks.

General discussion / Album of the Decade so far
November 23, 2007, 10:46:32 PM
As it's GAAboard tradition to talk music lists round this time of year, what do people think are the albums of the decade so far, those that will stand the test of time? No compilations! I'll throw out three- Bruce's "The Rising", Arcade Fire's "Funeral" (I know it's clichéd these days to call it an album of the decade, but it really is still sensational and Richard Hawley's "Cole's Corner". Beautiful stuff altogether!

General discussion / Cheap Flights To Paris
June 03, 2007, 11:43:56 PM
Lads, anyone got any tips for getting to Paris for cheap? Planning to go over the weekend of the 29 June to 1st July, pereferably out on the Friday and in on the Sunday, but would be willing to go out the Thursday and back the Monday if needs be. Cheapest flights I've been able to find so far are £165, which is considerably more than I was hoping to pay! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

General discussion / Dublin Student Accomodation
May 10, 2007, 12:00:56 AM
Lads, does anyone know of any good places in Dublin that would be suitable for five Trinity lads (each preferring their own room) that would be willing to accept students on the lease? Results so far have tentatively turned up a place in "Ashdale Avenue" in Harold's Cross, which we can't find on a map, and a place on the corner of the North Circular Road and Dorset Street. Places with four and six bedrooms would also be considered, as we're trying to tempt a sixth fella to go in with us. Ideally, we'd like to be no further north or south than the places already mentioned, but would be willing to go as far North as Marino/Fairview and as far south as Dartry. As a fivesome, our topmost budget would be aound the €2700 a month mark or €3200 for six of us.

Any information, links, tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!

GAA Discussion / Ulster Minor Club Championship
December 03, 2006, 11:16:05 PM
First two games have been played, Castlewellan winning the preliminary last week and ourselves spanking Monaghan Harps this afternoon in terrible conditions. They were 0-6 to 0-2 up at half time, with McGourty playing across the backline as it was obvious he wouldn't receive much ball in the gale force winds. After half time however, he took control of the game, scoring a fantastic goal inside the first ten seconds. He ended up with 2-5 I think from our total of 2-10, including a point from either sideline and a free from the forty-five. No doubt in my mind now that he's the best young footballer in Ulster, he's come on so much even in the year since I played with him.
