Liverpool are harder to call. Allison should immediately be worth 9 points more than last season, so poor was who he is replacing. But not many keepers adjust quickly to the levels of crosses they have to face in the EPL, so it might take a few months before he settles in. Further up the field, I genuinely doubt Fabinho is any improvement on Henderson or Milner, who know the league inaidenout and know their roles inside out. Keita should have more spark about him, but Liverpool don't really need a sparky central midfielder, more of a game controller. Ultimately, Liverpool's potential to challenge boils down to whether Salah is genuinely a worldie, or (just) a top class player who had an exceptional season. If it's the latter, Liverpool will be top 4. If the former they might even give City a challenge for a while.

Chelsea's almost relentless knack of sacking a manager then winning a major trophy has always been dependent on Abramovich's spending power and while it's difficult to see them winning a league no matter what, if Hazard has a wantaway season, they just won't have the cutting edge to trouble the top 4.

Arsenal haven't just replaced a manager, they've replaced a footballing culture, and I'd expect they'll take a few seasons to come close to top 4 again. Wenger has left behind a truly mediocre squad and we are about to find out just how poor. I honestly expect them to pick up less than 55 points this season, and Aubyemang will be the new Defoe, a fine goalscorer, but like playing with 10 men, especially away from home.

I'm not backing Liverpool this year for the title, the odds are too skinny and no money to be made..

Probably win it now but back to back winners of the PL is hard enough to do regardless of the squad City have, it doesnt happen that much.. I feel City will be going all out to win the CL this year and may not be at full pelt in the when it comes to PL games. Though in fairness they could win most games with their second string players!

Mo will not get an easy ride this year in the PL, he'll be targeted by the defenders, expect to see a few heavy tackles going in, Ramos style

Chelsea did two in a row back in the day also and this Man City team are better than that Chelsea side. Pep Guardiola is key for them to winning back to back titles and their biggest challenger this season will likely be Liverpool who haven't won the league since 1990 but at least they have a manager that won two league titles recently and back to back titles at that.

In some respects I think you are right. There were signs towards the end of last year that some of the "lower table" teams had learned how to deal with him better by going really tight on him (Pieters for Stoke stands out). However, hopefully this frees up Mane and Keita in particular to contribute a bit more. Firmino, like Salah probably cannot really hope to improve too much on what was a stellar season.

For what its worth I think City will win the league relatively comfortably and I think the United woes are being over stated. Sanchez, Lukaku, Mata, Pogba,Rashford, Martial etc is a pretty potent attacking force and regardless of whether they get a CB in, any Jose team will be solid defensively. They will not lose too many games but it will not be pretty.

Liverpool should be competitive but an injury to VVD would really hurt them moreso than Salah in my view.  As for Spurs, if Kane stays fit and Alberweild stays, expect more of the same from them. Chelsea, again I think are being written off prematurely. Jorgiho and Kovacic is a serious midfield partnership compared to what they had (Bakayaro?) and their forwards are capable of scoring goals. Courtois is a major blow though.

Arsenal I have no idea about.

Everton probably did the best signing Bernard, Yerry Mina and Andre Gomes.

Whatever about today Wolves did by far the best business of any of the EPL teams this summer. They even added a Belgian international in Dendoncker today to cap it off. And the prices they got were pretty much excellent all round too. And bar Rui Patrico (who isn't old for a keeper anyways) and Joao Mourthio at 31 they're all young high potential buys. And with so many Portuguese players it should help integrate the additions faster than they could otherwise expect.

Wolves ain't aiming to be a basement dweller this time.

6) Paul Merson

Annoying for several reasons, but probably the most mild offender on our list. Merson – or 'Merse', if you're a massive spanner – can still rile you up on a weekly basis. His occasional lapse of knowledge and uninformed aside is enough on its own to irk the viewer. Combine those with the forced aura of hilarity that seems to surround him now and you've got yourself a recipe for some serious TV-out-the-window antics. Perhaps we're going easy on him here putting him sixth, but Merse truly is one annoying sod. He's lucky not to have made the top five.

5) Kevin Kilbane

It's the hair, the voice, the slight lack of anything resembling footballing substance. Quite the coup for Kilbane, mind, making our list. It's probably the first thing that the fella's achieved in his whole career. Congrats, Kev, and thank us later. We've given you something to say. Rejoice, tamely: making the top five is a big deal.

4) Chris Kamara

Don't take it personally, but Kamara is infuriating. Following the infamous "I don't know, Jeff" moment, he's become a series of jarring sound bites now. It's the 'tache, the faux confusion and the nickname that do it, though the list could go on and on. The squeaky voiced Northerner deserves his place on here with pride.

3) Charlie Nicholas

Okay, we'll be honest now, it's the voice. Nicholas is as bearable as football pundits can be but, for Christ's sake, someone fiddle with the auto-tune. Yelps of high pitched excitement fly from the bloke's mouth and scorch the air like a helium-filled Catherine Wheel whenever any-thing remotely exciting happens on those mysterious, hidden screens of Soccer Saturday. Mix in a bit of Martin Keown and Nicholas would be a treat to listen to.

2) Chris Sutton

Sutton is confrontational, conflicting and curt on screen when covering Scottish football. His eagerness to pick a fight with fellow pundits or lambaste the next victim in his sights is, at times, painfully awkward and leads to several on-air bust-ups that can leave viewers wincing. He annoys in that he seems so c**k-sure of his own convictions whilst failing repeatedly to hear the flip side to them. Should he calm down a notch and bring his floating ego closer to earth, we may just bump him down our list. Now there's some incentive, Chrissy.

1) Michael Owen

Just Google some of the absolute clangers that have rung from this chap's mouth. Most of Owen's quotes have felt beyond parody but real highlights include, "that shot is impossible. I saw Yaya Toure do it once", "if there's a bit of rain about, it makes the surface wet", and "whichever team scores more goals usually wins." We listen to these professionals for insight into football, but Owen chats so regularly from a certain location which lacks our nearest star's beaming rays that he merits making this list. His depth of thought is just that little bit too deep for us simple telly-watchers, we don't want to get lost in the mysteries of why water is wet.

Not kept much of an eye on Southampton fortunes but weren't they in the bottom 3 when he took them over late last season? The seem to have sold an inordinate number of decent players over the last 4/5 years whats their recruitment been like?

Hughes was hardly an inspired choice at the time. He'll likely appear at some top half championship side sooner rather than later.

Not quite sure how you stop fans shouting at players... Plenty of it in the GAA too.

Those hurling racist abuse should be identified and banned.....and if the clubs won't do it then the FA should issue sanctions against the clubs.

Agree with you.....you only have to look at some of the 'role models' and the way they speak to match officials.....the refs don't deal with it....a few red cards for verbal abuse would soon settle the players jets.

After the recent rugby trial thread on this board - I would have thought that innocent until proven guilty would have been drilled into even the most bloodthirsty here.

Not to stand up for a Chelsea fan, guilty or not - which is to be decided, ultimately the only person knows are the immediate vicinity witnesses and Sterling himself but there isn't a game played in the Premier League which a player doesn't get a load of it when he goes to take a corner. The amount of shock at this like it's a one off (again, assuming verbal abuse only) is beyond absurd. It happens every week, in every game. I'm not saying it's ok by any means, but Christ, some need to catch a grip here. Talk about jumping on a bandwagon.

I also find it quite insane how a Banana can be thrown at a black player just 7 days prior and there's not one post on it in this thread yet there's men out to hang people with what could be racist abuse / might not be - there is reasonable doubt (right now). Anyway, if it was racial abuse - Raheem Sterling should be absolutely lauded for his reaction and restraint. Remarkable from the young man who people have said before is a bit of target for most kinds of abuse.

Boycey, I was thinking that myself. Someone may have just eaten a banana and fired it in frustration at his own team or at an opposing player. I don't know what they eat at soccer matches, but I've seen many's an apple, orange, banana etc eaten at GAA matches.

The sterling thing wouldn't be about chelsea. Ian Wright and Gary Lineker picked it up on twitter and that made it run and in addition Sterling tweeted himself about it.Those 3 things would give it legs. Also the fact that people are able to put together about 30 tweets worth of crap that Sterling gets which is very inconsistent with other players has given it mileage.

I would be inclined to say I am not 100% sure what the guy said and whether or not it was racist but he is clearly an arsehole. I watched the game and the corner was almost directly after when David Luiz had got wrecked by Sterling. It was actually Luiz's fault as he went do do sterling and sterling jumped up with his knees to avoid him and ending up wrecking Luiz's ribs. However with that I think "emotions" about him were running higher.

I also do wonder if it's a "class" thing as opposed to a race thing. It's bullshit whatever it is but there are others get this abuse who aren't people of colour.

Agreed and Sterling should be commended on how he has reacted to this. Thought he came across very well in the Man City documentary - obviously it's edited extremely kindly, but even still as a person he was not who we are told he 'should be'.

Unfortunately this looks like another instance however when one person (or a few) have obviously let themselves down a complete bagful in the national eye - but, they are average joes so nobody will care tomorrow. Quick - lets get the next Celeb head on the chopping block though.

I've been going to 'soccer' matches for well over fifty years and I don't remember anyone eating a banana at one.

That was a poor man's person's el classico tonight between the top two in the epl. Puzzling to see Shaqiri entering the game (far too late) and sent into a defensive midfield role. Man City don't look anything more than an average top team, Liverpool are still in pole position.

I think they could if they can give the winner a Europa league spot? I dont think the big boys would ever allow it though (and UEFA probably would not be keen either). Too big a risk of a "smaller" team getting in and taking one of "their" places. Although if you look back through the last twenty years winners that risk is probably minimal.

CL qualification is by league placing only. Cannot use cup competitions for CL entry.

I think it will come down to the Big Six games. Realistically I cannot see City dropping points to anyone bar Spurs/Utd while Liverpool could easily drop points at one of the other teams (Southampton looks difficult). Timing of Champions League/Europa league could have a big impact as well. Chelsea might put a lot of eggs in the Europa League basket as an easier route to CL qualification while Spurs will be in the CL mix when they come to Anfield.

If a straight acca then the teams are removed and your stake is on whatever games are left.

It a combined acca eg a patent, you will get a refund on the legs that couldn't take place.

The thing that stands out is that "overseas" does not include over the Irish Sea. Roy Keane is as much a foreigner as Claude Makelele.

Arsenal already have more points than last season. They spent last summer what Chelsea and Liverpool spent on a goalkeeper. As for the Spurs comparisons. Spurs have won two leagues. Arsenal have won the league twice at WHL and also won it in colour.

The title race goes to the final day and its been the only bit of quality in mediocre league season. Outside of the top 2 the only sides i'd give a bit of credit too are small clubs like Bournemouth,Brighton,Burnley for staying up and Wolves for finishing in 7th.

Forgot about Watford and they play a nice brand of football. Would be nice to see their hard work rewarded with a FA Cup final win.

United and Arsenal sure made a balls of what looked like was going to be an exciting Champions League race. Both pretty pathetic today in must win games against mediocre opposition. At least Arsenal have a second chance for CL.

Considering the diving antics in recent Liverpool and Arsenal games, it was a bit of a shock to witness a clean goal from Man City, though it be a fluke shot from a centre half.

If that late Iheanacho chance had fell to Vardy? A deserved win for Manchester City the crossbar and Schmeichel kept that game scoreless before that unbelievable strike from Kompany.

Kompany away from City. Serious operator. Brilliant leader. They will miss his influence.

One of the best captains,defenders and leaders the Premier league has seen. He probably still have another few seasons in him for City or be he couldn't play a full season anymore. No room for sentiment at that club and likes of De ligt,Koulibaly could be signed now.

Too many lads hang on, so Kompany making the right decision to leave after a successful season. I'd be surprised if he played 20 matches a season for the last 3 or 4 years so he's better winding down.

Pity he didn't leave before the Leicester game! Great leader in fairness. His body was starting to let him down but his mind and attitude are still spot on.

Is he not a bit young to be a player manager? Usually someone only does both for maybe a season before he quits playing altogether. Even with injuries and game management he can be influential somewhere as a player only. Especially a team with a big squad and competing on all fronts. Like erm...

Glad to see the back of him!  A massive influence in that team. Seemed to drive them on.

Birmingham City fans might not agree but good to see Aston Villa back in the Premier league. Villa park one of those old grounds that has a bit of character.

In the footage, both men were seen brandishing knives at 26-year-old Kolasinac, who ran at them regardless.

A witness, Azuka Alintah, told the Daily Mail that Özil had subsequently spoken to police outside a nearby Turkish restaurant, from which staff had come to the players' aid. "Özil looked absolutely terrified, as anybody would after being chased by men with knives. He looked like he was running for his life."

An Arsenal spokesperson said: "We have been in contact with both players and they are fine."

Kolasinac and midfielder Özil are not the first London-based footballers to be targeted on the road. In 2016, then West Ham striker Andy Carroll was threatened at gunpoint on his way home from training.

Police, who had received reports of an attempted robbery, went to Platts Lane, in north-west London, shortly before 5pm, according to Scotland Yard.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: "It was reported that suspects on motorbikes had attempted to rob a man who was driving a car. The driver, along with his passenger, managed to get away unharmed and travelled to a restaurant in Golders Green, where they were spoken to by officers." The spokesman said there have been no arrests and officers are still investigating the incident.
