How long is this debate going to go on for? Typical GAA who simply bury their head in the sand and offer little or no assistance. Take the McKenna cup up in Ulster this year, the rules stated that county lads play with their colleges but then when a few county managers said they wanted them the Ulster council back tracked straight away and said it was up to the players. UP TO THE PLAYERS? What sort of protection is that to give young lads who don't want to let anyone down! The GAA need to pull out the finger and sort this out once and for all. They need clear guidelines so as everyone knows where players stand. Ideas like moving Sigerson to pre Christmas, or delaying the league etc are all viable. Doing nothing is not an option.

That was at the peak of the Tyrone Armagh rivalry, you can hardly say that was a reular occurrence in the McKenna Cup

And it was achieved without the universities. I didn't say it was a regular occurrence, but to say the universities have added "excitement, flair and bite" to the competition is nonsense.

No it's not. Many county managers were quoted as saying that the college sides added a competitive edge to the competition which was otherwise just a pre season challenge match competition. To use Tyrone V Armagh freak one off crowd as an example of the competition being fine before the colleges were added is ridiculous! The college sides bring energy and an element of surprise to these competitions and only the small minded county supporter who knows nothing outside his/her own county will argue otherwise.

Would I be speaking out of turn when I say that the majority of people don't care about the sigerson fullstop?
I went to university in belfast and lived with several lads that represented their respective counties at underage, (one had a runout with county seniors,) and they never considered even attending matches out at the dub never mind training for the university teams. It's a side of university life that only a few feel attached to, as can be seen by supporter attendances.  I presume that most of the people in support felt more affinity with the university than we did at least, maybe you were part of the 'rancher clique'.  Anyway for me county is county and sigerson only interests those who have played in it.

You would be way off the mark here. The lads "who never even considered attending matches" were just not good enough. Every college has a band of players "who don't consider playing" cos they know they are not good enough. The best players play and then make their county teams. The fact that they play Sigerson cup usually brings them on and helps them make county sides.
As for McKenna cup - this was a nothing competition before the college sides added excitement, flair and bite into it! It's now a thriving competition with a competitive edge. Mickey harte should wise up and let his colleges players play for their college. Sligo IT have all of our county lads and it was no problem with their respective managers

Not sure how the Ulster teams are such short odds. Maynooth, Cork IT and Carlow IT look great value!

Sligo IT have a fair team this year with a sprinkling of county talent. They are away to Tralee in first round which is probably the easiest draw. For me it's between the Leinster sides.. Carlow, Maynooth and DCU.

That's the most expensive app i've seen bar GPS apps. Too expensive! If they halved the cost they would sell 3 times the amount IMO

Does it have to be a Connacht ground? They couldnt take it out of the province surely?

A winter training ban is a good thing (if imposed) but it is only not respected due to the lack of enforcement. Sligo and Leitrim are both putting in a serious pre season at the minute and will train and play through December. No-one cares about breaking the rule and county board officials turn a blind eye. Either Croke Park pull the finger out and enforce it or abolish it.

LOL ah Stronghold, so now you are a senior lecturer?!  ::) Sure we can't believe a word you say. You havent even the basic intelligence to make sure your porkies are consistant.  :P
The world and his mother knows that UUJ pull in players every year (I know a player who was approached and noted the offerings!) yet you consistantly come on here denying the fact. Less of the oul senior lecturer, I have a daughter at Queen's nonsense (what has that got to do with anything anyway) and just let lads apply to the college if they want to go there. By approaching players you simply underline your own lack of confidence in the fact that players actually don't want to go there without these incentives and dropping grades and the likes.

GAA Discussion / Re: TG4 - Club Championships Coverage

I have always felt that TG4 coverage of Connacht club games has been tokanistic to say the least. You will find that some of the best provincial club games are in Connacht.

Lads, many of you are completely missing the point on this thread. Nobody really cares which college or University is best, nobody actually even mentioned it till Stronghold started throwing his toys out of the pram. The issue being discussed was the fact that some colleges (or at least their GAA clubs) have zero integrity, they rip the piss, break rules year in year out and Yes UUJ are top of the pile where this is concerned. They have been at it for a generation now. The problem is that whilst many college GAA clubs are student led (like Trinity, Queens, UCG, UCC) but a few others like DCU and UUJ have a few aging "eternal students" in charge who are obssesed with their neighbouring colleges and getting one over on them. You will then have people like Stronghold on here telling lies. The best defence he has is saying that others are at it too and pretending to be someone else who has no connection to UUJ yet knows what every player has for breakfast! Pathetic.
I have no doubt UUJ is a great college, no-one argued that despite Strongholds tears, it's their lack of integrity I have a problem with and the fact that they have no-marks running the thing giving them all a bad name.

Really sorry to hear that about Mickey. Has been great for Leitrim football. He came in to talk to our club seniors before a Sligo c/ship game about 6 months ago and he was a true gent in every way. A real honest GAA man! Good luck to him and hope it's not serious.
