I see it's been confirmed (after lots of rumour) that JD Weatherspoons are coming to Blackrock. Shur, this just down the road from where I live

Shall we roll out the welcome mats or should we run them out of the place?

Coming on top of the news that GAA is being played in Blackrock College and our beloved Superquinn in becoming SuperValu should I just pack the bags and move back to Longford?

If they have the range of real ales that they have in English pubs, I might consider making it my new local.

Canalman

Pub trade on its knees in the city. Not imo going to get any better as there is a whole younger generation not bothering going to pubs at all...................... drinking at home and going straight to the nightclubs.

If they are priced right (5 pints for say E20 or so ) they will do ok .

If the price of a pint is lowered as a result in the city it will be a good thing.

CD

'And I saw a beast rising out of the sea, with ten horns and seven heads, with ten diadems on its horns and blasphemous names on its heads. And the beast that I saw was like a leopard; its feet were like a bear's, and its mouth was like a lion's mouth. And to it the dragon gave his power and his throne and great authority. One of its heads seemed to have a mortal wound, but its mortal wound was healed, and the whole earth marvelled as they followed the beast. And they worshipped the dragon, for he had given his authority to the beast, and they worshipped the beast, saying, "Who is like the beast, and who can fight against it?" And the beast was given a mouth uttering haughty and blasphemous words, and it was allowed to exercise authority for forty-two months. ...'

This was written in BC 3400 when the first Ye Olde Weatherspoons opened in Gomorrah. It was known as the Jewel of Canaan before it opened. Forty-two months later, fire and brimstone. Goodbye Blackrock.

Who's a bit of a moaning Michael tonight!

I work in Blackrock and live in Monkstown. Tonic was a dive. Can't imagine this will improve it too much.

I struggle to see the sense in it given Canada Life are pulling out of the area. Limited enough customer base and nowehere in Blackrock has managed to turn into an attractive weekend spot.

Shamrock Shore

Jazes Gallsman - we're practically neighbours.

You probably see my office every day........

Agree 100% with you. God be with the days of The Mad Hatter......

Bingo

Any sign of Supermacs though? Thats the key to the takeover....

Shamrock Shore

Supermacs slap bang in the centre of the village - just beside the haltin site and the needle exchange centre  >:(

Ah Weatherspoons, that shining beacon that attracts that tracksuited masses. A great place to go if you like a row, cheap as chips right enough, but the threat of getting glassed at any second balances that one out

I've been in many a Weatherspoons in England and never felt threatened.

Required an escort out of that one In Belfast before. The natives were getting restless

The one in Belfast is a different world altogether. I was in it once at half five on a Tuesday getting food and there were 3 people kicked out in the half an hour or so I was there. Meanwhile the boy at the table next to me was busy bragging about how much stuff he had nicked out of JJB on the boucher road that day.

Fair enough. Dare I say that Blackrock is closer to Boston (Lincolnshire) than Belfast? :P

It is a scary place. I'm afraid to walk past it and cross the road there above it. The people out front having a 'feg' are like something out of Dickensian slum wearing grey kappa.
