General discussion / Re: The IRISH RUGBY thread

Couldn't get watching this. Have Ireland scored 4 penalties?

The year England won the World Cup I think every score was a penalty.

I don't know much about rugby but I always thought it was better to take every scoring chance instead of kicking to the corner to go for a try?

As far as I know Cahair O'Kane put out a starting 15 without a Glen man mentioned so there were more than Silver Hill who got it wrong.

What way is the breeze going? McFaul took a fairly long point for the breeze to be badly against him?

They were "fixing" bugs on live systems and in doing so messing up the figures but were telling the sub post masters that no one else had access to their terminals.

We admit to all our bugs (too many unfortunately) but we always release the 'fix' into the customer's test system prior to putting it into Live. That's the norm for most software companies.

Quote from: SHEEDY on November 14, 2023, 05:45:38 PMWhy would it be the end for Kilcoo? May as well ask is it the end for Crossmaglen. An Ulster championship is always hard won, getting beat by Scotstown is no disgrace. They'll be team to beat in Down again next year.
Winning groups always find a way. Kilcoo won the all Ireland. Maybe this current team has done all it could.  Crossmaglen are currently off the boil. It happens to all teams in every sport . Kilcoo will be back but maybe not with this team.

Scotstown just edged them with the last kick of the game.

They're still top dogs in Down, beat Derrygonnelly handy enough, so they'll be there or there abouts next yesr again I think.

They just got caught at the death. I wouldn't write them off by that. It's not as if the Monaghan lads beat them by 10 pts.
Yeah they got caught at the death in the same way they caught Glen at the death the year they won the All Ireland. I'd be very surprised if they don't win Down next year and be back into Ulster again.

Quote from: ardtole on October 31, 2023, 08:05:30 PMI was in Clones for the Down v Armagh game last summer. Its no longer fit for purpose. I was in Breffini for the Down v Cavan Tailtain cup game and its much better in my opinion. Not sure what the capacity is though.
I hope Casement gets built but I can never imagine feeling as relaxed on summer day around Andy Town as I have been in Clones having a beer and a bit of craic before or after a match.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think Derry played much better yesterday than they did in the Ulster Final.

Monaghan were a shadow of what they were in that game and the game against Mayo.

I know they kicked a lot of wides but they just weren't the same team.

Dubs and Monaghan will fill Croke, this one should be played after Tailteean Cup final. Not often Croke Pk misses out on an opportunity to sell tickets.
My thoughts exactly. I was sure our game would be on the Saturday evening after Down and Meath. Croker could have been three quarters full with those matches and Dublin and Monaghan would fill the place on the Sunday.

Cork have come on big time since Derry played them in the League. It's a hard one to call. As tbrick said Derry have no right to be complacent.

I hope that he has good advice. He could fix himself, sort out the family stuff, turn things around and come back to the sport, I imagine. He could also self destruct. He is a very talented coach.
if allegations are true he should not be anywhere near the sport again, at least without a lengthy spell inside.

That goes for anyone in any sport, but in reality, that's not going to happen, there must be countless offenders out there looking after teams or involved in GAA.

How can you make this assumption? What are you basing this on?

The reason the GAA don't know how to handle this is because it's never really come up that much before as far as I'm aware.

There may be countless offenders in the General Public but I don't see why it has to follow that 'there must be countless offenders out there looking after teams or involved in GAA'.

So anyone can email a county board with an allegation and they must stand down the manager?

Who has actually said that?

It's not so much as said that, but people have done it and it works. The case here in question I'm totally behind Mrs Gallagher my point is that anyone can send an email or go on to social media and make claims about someone.

Would you be happy if you had allegations (true or false) made public via social media that would have wider implications on your kids and job and that would have even more implications on caring for your children should you lose your job over it?

The courts are there for a reason, to settle these issues. Court by social media though seems to be the way of the world.

Nobody is saying the courts should not do their job but right back at the beginning of this the "suspended pending investigation" route was explained and what steps you would need to take before suspending the individual.

Derry had their own decision to make and steps to take. All of which have already been set out.

Put yourself in Derry CB's position if they did get that email from Nicola's dad.

Your response would be that due to the seriousness of the allegations that he should go to the police with them.

In the meantime you'd have a duty of care to all to face Rory with what you've been informed about and as we've seen from his release, he probably told them (or would have told them) that these claims have been "dealt with" during the custody case and he's been cleared and now has custody of the children.

What do Derry CB do next?

They really can't be ignoring an email of that type all the same, that's really bad if they did.

The Derry Co Board are annoying me more and more with their no statement bullshit.

Gallagher deserves the book to be thrown at him and I hope he does time for the awful abuse he has dished out to his poor wife over the years.

However maybe I'm being naive but I can't see why the major witch hunt against the Derry board in the wake of all this.

They may or may not have got an email but by not speaking out it's not like they were protecting him like the Catholic Church used to protect paedophiles who were free to abuse again and again.

I would think most of this abuse was in the past so I'd think it is unlikely that he would be offending again in the same way.

Before I get a written battering I'd like to say I totally abhor all violence.

What does it matter if the accuser's father emailed the Derry board?  Surely if someone emailed my work with such an accusation they would be told wrong direction, contact the police.

Not really.

Do you think is all the responsibility a community sports organisation has?
Do you think that's what their members would want?
Do you think that what their sponsors would want?
Do you think that's what potential funding agencies would want?
Do you think that would be the best way to protect the game that you are there to nurture would be?

The matter will have to be fully investigated. Was the mail sent? Was it received? Who the did the recipient share it with? What they do next? These should not be difficult questions to answer.

Sponsorship and funding needs to go into domestic violence ... Nurturing your club and it's members also needs role models and lessons that no man \ woman has any right ever to lift their hand to someone ..

Genuinely think you are just being obtuse here.

Do you accept that Derry, if they received this warning, had a duty to act?

Can I get clarity on this .. Being a female poster and being called obtuse .. Am I ' annoyingly , insensitive, or slow to understand ' or am less than180 degrees "?

Slow to understand. Wilfully so I would guess.
leenie I THINK smelmoth was replying to nrico2006 and mixed your reply up with the latter's. There is no way the statement highlighted in bold could be described as obtuse.

What a disaster this has all been....horrible stuff....nightmare...

If 1% of the accusations are true there can be absolutely no pity......I have sisters.....daughters.....it was a harrowing read...

No excuse....completely vile....

However....trial by social media is mental...

In general....anyone of us on here could have our world's ended by simple click of a button....rightly or wrongly......whether true or false......life destroyed....blink of an eye......its far too open...

If a certain man was to retaliate and post a long story outlining years of abuse or some sort of self defence on social media (which could be absolute lies as no-one actually knows) I hope it would be received with the same energy........

Massive failings all round on many fronts....too many to go in to.... and those poor children....May God give them the strength....

I can only hope there is no more bad news to come....

Felt Derry were slight favourites before the game....its completely swung in Armaghs favour I feel...

The GAA is massive for most of us....but in life....there are far more important things than football....

The whole things is tainted now and it's hard to look forward to this game....whether it's win....loose or draw....
Tainted is a bit of a stretch at this stage.

I don't see how the whole thing can be tainted when Gallagher is no longer going to be on the sideline.

It's not the Derry players fault and I (along with many others) will be absolutely delighted if they happen to win the game.

Former kerry player Bryan sheehan needs to be included in this discussion

Totally agree. Him and Maurice Fitz.
Absolutely mental shoutout to yer man Shelly something from Antrim who kick about 15 points from frees V Down in the 00's. Can't mind his surname or exactly how many points he scored but he had two different boots and had a crazy good game.

Sheeny McQuillan ?

Sheeny McQuillan lol...he was barely putting them over

I think Big Tohill caught one of his to hold Antrim to a draw back about 2000.
