Title: 2018 NFL Division 4
Post by: AQMP on January 03, 2018, 05:46:20 PM
Just for completeness' sake

Antrim
Carlow
Laois
Leitrim
Limerick
London
Waterford
Wicklow

Laois and Limerick favourites to go up, with maybe Antrim or Carlow sneaking in should one of those not make it??  Thoughts??

I think Carlow will top it.
Leix second.

Limerick won't be too far away from promotion either while Antrim will probably round up the top 4.

Wicklow could be in contention if John Evans can persuade players to commit. He had a decent league record with Tipperary and Roscommon.

Their result at the weekend would not inspire confidence and they are coming from a position where they were the worst team in the country. There obviously is some footballing talent in the county though but it will take time to get going.

Leitrim are worse than Wicklow.

Amazing to see Laois so low down. I remember travelling to Portlaoise a few years ago to see them play Mayo.

Laois have Donie Kingston back and the players have bought into Sugrue.  They should go back up. Antrim have a kind run of fixtures and could be in promotion spot early before meeting stronger teams. Carlow had a good summer but have two sticky away games to start with which could put them under pressure. I think Limerick are going to be very competitive this year - they got a bad start last year and never recovered. Wicklow will find the going very tough - too much team building ahead for Evans this year. Funny thing about Div 4 this year is London have 7 home games and that will help them get a few wins. Leitrim are young and missing too many first teamers to seriously contend.

Leitrim next up for Laois. 5 points for any intercounty team over 70 minutes is very poor. They must have no forwards at all!

Laois team named for game against Waterford tomorrow. Ross Munnelly back in the corner. He's an example to all young footballers. Still has the hunger to keep it going.
Laois will be too strong for Waterford and should have a few points to spare over them.

As a Kildare man I'd fear Carlow could pull off an upset in the Leinster championship if they get over Louth in the 1st round. They are looking like they are building on last years good form much to Joe Brolly's dismay. It is good to see.

Carlow on 6 points with +21 score difference.

Leitrim looking in a world of bother with 3 losses.

Leitrim have played Carlow (on 6 points) and Antrim and Laois (both on 4 points)

Antrim 0:15 Leitrim 0:05
Leitrim 3:10 Laois 3:16
Carlow 2:11 Leitrim 0:05

Some difference between home and away form in the scoring department 2 games on the road they have got 0:5 in both but managed to put 3:10 past Laois's defence at home.

Carlow right in the mix for promotion - their games against Laois and Antrim look like they will be the promotion deciders.

Round 4 coming up. You'd have to fancy Antrim to bounce back from dropping a point to Wicklow and now beat London comfortably. They are unlikely to get caught a second time.
Laois have impressed under Sugrue; he has revitalised the older players and brought in hungry younger lads to fight for those starting jerseys. Cannot see Wicklow being within 8-10 points of them even in Aughrim.
Carlow may be sitting on top of the table but who have they beaten?? Leitrim, Limerick and London. nothing to get excited about. Waterford are capable of so much more - a big team with good ball players. That will be tight and I go for Waterford here.
Leitrim and Limerick have nothing but pride to play for and Limerick should prevail.
I fancy Laois to wrap up the division early and blood more players before the championship opener v Wexford. O Carroll and Lowry stood out of rUCD throughout the Sigerson campaign and have really strengthened the forward division.

They beat Leitrim in better fashion than Laois did, beat London comfortably away and beat Limerick in comfortable fashion.
Laois beat Limerick well to be fair but conceded 3-10 against Leitrim and struggled to beat Waterford. There is not much between them and Carlow might be the more tactically astute and better prepared team. I'd expect both to go up tbh.

Yeah I definitely wouldn't be so sure about Laois going up just yet - a massive red flag for me is that they conceded 3-10 to Leitrim, when Leitrim only managed to score 0-5 in both their other games.

Funny to be asking who Carlow beat when the 3 teams Laois have beat are the 3 teams at the bottom of the table (although 2 of them are teams Carlow beat)

Fair point but Laois have been playing with a lot of their expereinced players either resting or dropped to test their commitment. Think they have risen to the challenge and come the end of the league Laois will have their strongest team on the pitch plus a depth to their squad that was missing in the past few years. Lot of quality around that panel.

Leitrim wanted the game played. Had to concede the London game because of the expense of traveling to London twice while they didn't want just 5 league games before the championship especially when they have 3 of their better players have just returned to the panel.

McGlinchy is all for a tiered Championship!!

Their 2 quick mailings in May/early June gets rid of them too.

Not sure he is.. He's a clubmate of mine. In principle he's not against it, but he doesn't think there's any appetite for it and he knows it would be treated like shite.

I read comments of his in the papers saying he's for it. He says the League is their All Ireland as it is.
Connerton of Longford of a similar view while Carlow's O'Brien totally against. Mind you Carlow might be in Tier 1 if they keep progressing like the last 12 months.

As I said on another thread the GPA and indeed CPA were opposed to the "Super 8" but we're totally ignored by the decision makers.

Laois starting well though both teams getting huge numbers behind the ball making for a lot of running with the ball and little kicking. Carlow seem to have no outlet and are struggling to create any scoring opportunities at all. Some great points from Laois all the same.

Laois look the better team with more lads capable of scoring. Ross Munnelly is some man, a great servant to Laois.

Would have to wonder what was going on in this fixture last weekend as Laois only managed to score 7 times (1-6) and won.

Surely it makes more sense to put the crowd facing the tv cameras when its that small, looks like 0 there. Really it should be played elsewhere but I understand the reasoning

Laois have had a lack of conditioning for about 5 years and it still seems to be there

Jaysus you often here supporters bemoan that their players will make the goalie MOM but it isn't often it actually happens but Jarlath has given him it. Not sure it's deserved but Carlow certainly gave him a heap of ball.

yes the Laois mistakes are more from tiredness Carlow are fitter but have been in div 4 for 40 years and will improve as they move up a division, good few of Laois players have played in div 1/2
Neither of them are any great shakes

Enjoyable afternoon. Great to see Laois win. Only unbeaten county in the country in the league.
My young fella loved his first experience of Croke Park.

I hate seeing footballers soccering the ball. Carlow did it a few times and lost the ball. Maybe harsh, but I'd be dropping a few of the Carlow team long before the championship starts.
