Building construction standards have huge impacts on earthquake death levels. Except in Japan and California.

One person in Ireland mentioned that their relatives had recently moved into a newly built building, which collapsed in a heap and killed them. That is shocking in a known earthquake zone. If the quake had been in California or Japan then it would have killed a few dozen people only.
Fortunately, earthquakes are one thing that we do not have in Ireland in a serious way.
