Mhic I think I've deleted a partition on it is that what's causing this. and when I right click on it it's giving me an option to create a "new simple volume"

And no I dont know why I f**king couldn't have left it alone!

What are the options when you right click? 
Make Partition Active? or Can you change drive letter and path?

Is Create a new simple volum the only option available?  If so give it a lash.

Just follow the instructions on that link I gave to format to FAT in DOS

mhic it says access denied as I have insufficient priviledges and I have to "invoke this utility running in elevated mode"

You on Vista then?
When you click cmd into the search bar it should list cmd.exe at the top.
If you right click Run as Administrator then try it again.

Can you enter anything there? Maybe give it a new name Maybe give the model of the disk. 
See if it accepts a new name.

In Disk Management Does it have a label in there?
Or Does it dosplay in My Coimputer Your c drive might say Local Disk, what does that one say?
Try entering that.

Yes, got it - now it's sitting saying formatting 0% complete but it doesnt look like it's doing anything.
how long does it take?


ok ten minutes later and it's moved to 1% - leave the computer on tonight job then....

I think when I done it, it was pretty quick. 
But can't remember 100% exactly which way I done it. 
Hows it progressing now?

1% - it is a 1tb drive.

Thats going to take a while. 
There is probably software which could do it quicker which is only a quick format.

Full probably better so you may leave it overnight.
