John Mullane is understood to be taking an indefinite break from intercounty hurling.

The De La Salle dynamo hasn't featured for the Decies so far this year and - according to reports in today's Irish Examiner - will not be available to Michael Ryan for the foreseeable future.

No reason has been given for the player's apparent unavailability.

Many thought Mullane - an All Star for the past three years - was a shoo-in to be named Waterford captain this year but that honour has instead gone to Michael Walsh.

The news comes on the same day that another 30-year-old - Tipp's Lar Corbett - announced his shock intercounty retirement. But Decies supporters shouldn't worry unduly ... Mullane only appeared twice in the league last year.
