Plenty of good points scored from play by Monaghan. It was better in the 2nd half from Down but too little quality in the team to make a game of it after getting close. Even though their low esteem was noted here, it was still a surprise to witness just how poor this Down team is.

No idea why Sky chose this game to televise; everyone knew it was going to be a walkover; Wexford and Dublin might be just as bad.
Down were shocking. Monaghan fell asleep to give them 2 goals and they still lost by 10

Very odd game. Was a real lack of atmosphere and bite in the game outside of a short spell either side of half time when Down got their goals. They really caught us sleeping, and it was hard to believe at 36 minutes that there was only 2 points in it. Didn't matter too much as we were able to kick on and get alot more points, but still something you'd be raging at.

Thought Down would kick on after that 2nd goal but we were able to pull away fairly easy, Down were very poor. Good to see Jack carry in his league form with some great scores, and Mohan on his championship debut was a real handful. The more direct kicking game was effective even on a wet day like today, but much tougher tests lie ahead.

Down really should consider folding a footballing county on that performance. Absolutely dire. The GAA should charge them with bringing the game into disrepute. If I was James McCarten I'd make them walk back to Down.
Monaghan will have learned nothing. Better to have had a training session than that walkover.

Ah the precious Ulster championship....at least McEvoy and the rest of the suits keep their cushy jobs.

The Tailteann Cup is what Down need to build some momentum

Do you think that would be a game-changer? Really? Down have 5 All Irelands and were in an All Ireland Final just over a decade ago! Winning this would be like Spurs winning the Europa conference League and saying this will get them back on the road to glory!

Jaysus the ultimate insult. Being compared to spurs

Not a game changer but it could change the dynamic.

Down have won no game this year.
I doubt anyone in Down is thinking of any All-Ireland glory.
The Tailteann Cup gives them a chance to at least win a senior intercounty game this year.
Win a couple of games and it would at least give some positivity about their chances of getting out of Division 3 next year.
The worry for Down after today is that they go out and get beaten by a Division 4 team and end the year without a win to their name.

I don't know an awful lot about football but I'll tell you something I learned today. Mullets don't work in the rain. A Monaghan boy looked like he'd a pile of big worms or small snakes riding his scalp.

Did Down let the chance go to offer the job to Michael Harte? was that ever a possibility?
The Tailteann is the equivalent of the perp walk for Down, no salvation to be found there.

So what's the alternative, just give up? Down a million miles from where they were 10 years ago. If they don't fancy the Tailtean Cup then why bother at all

The Subbie

From a Monaghan point of view that game had to be won and won with no injuries or red cards, so in that sense it was a success ( as long as O'Connell was took off as a precaution)
What I would say following that is that Down were one of the most pathetic teams I've ever seen take the field in an Ulster Championship Match
Even in the bad old days of the 90's when Monaghan didn't have much of a team we'd always put a shift in for a Championship match, put up some kind of fight to make a contest of it and go down fighting
Down were atrocious , looked like a crowd of lads who turned up for the gear
Monaghan will face much tougher days this summer and will need to forget about Down and not get too far ahead of themselves
Good debut by Mohan & good to see a few other championship debuts handed out also
