Missing millionaire Steve Fossett declared dead

Steve Fossett, the multimillionaire adventurer, has been declared legally dead five months after his disappearance while flying over the Nevada desert.

His wife, Peggy, had filed her petition in a court in Chicago to allow the process of executing Mr Fossett's will to begin.

"It was very sad," said Michael LoVallo, Mrs Fossett's attorney. "At first she hoped and sort of envisioned him walking down the road the next day with another story to tell.

"But as the days went on, she realized it wasn't going to happen as it had on other occasions when he'd had close calls."

After hearing testimony from Mrs Fossett, a family friend and a search-and-rescue expert, Judge Jeffrey Malak of the Cook County circuit court yesterday found there were "more than sufficient" evidence that Mr Fosset was dead.

Court records stated that Mr Fossett's estate was "vast" and worth millions of pounds.

There has been no trace of the 63-year-old adventurer since he had taken off in a single-engine plane from an airstrip near Yerington, Nevada, on Sept 3 last year.

Nothing fishy about this? How can you just disappear?

Strange one indeed.  With today's technology available, and the fact that he went missing in a country that has every known technology available to it, how can he not be found?  No wreckage, nothing.  I'm sure Nevada is a massive area but surely with planes and search teams, something should have been found.

Fossett's disappearance led to the most compute power ever being devoted to a search and rescue, and the techniques used by (would you believe) a joint google microsoft and amazon  team of computer scientists have led to huge advances in how search and rescue is addressed. There is an introduction to it here http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/09/13/AR2007091302586.html
Goes to show that despite all of the satellite imagery and tracking available, a man can still very simply disappear, even when thousands of people are looking for him.

Its unlikely (but not impossible) that Fossett left with the specific intention of not being found, but if you compare the Nevada mountains with the mountains in Pakistan and Afghanistan, and someone who is actively avoiding being found, its no wonder that Usama hasn't been found...
