General discussion / Quinn's Pub closing down
November 19, 2012, 08:55:02 PM
http://www.joe.ie/news-politics/current-affairs/last-orders-quinns-pub-drumcondra-to-close-for-good-0030653-1

QuoteWe've just found out that Quinns in Drumcondra - you may have staggered out of it before - is officially closing its doors for the foreseeable future.

It may come as a shock to some of you, especially if Quinns was your local, but the pub that has been serving pints to its loyal customers for the past 25 years is to close its doors for good.

The pub has been through some seriously tough times thanks to the recession and as more and more punters opt to drink at home instead of spending the extra few quid for a pint in the pub.

Bankers from the IBRC, formally Anglo Bank, tried to raid Quinns two weeks ago in order to seize the property as they claim the landlord, Eoin Quinlan, owes €250,000 in rent arrears. Speaking to the Evening Herald last Monday Mr Quinlan said, "I can make the pub work at €15,000 rent but not €30,000 -- no publican is that good."

Sadly, the debts have finally caught up with Mr Quinlan and Quinns in Drumcondra. Here's what the pub has to say on their Facebook page: "To all our customers - Just a very big thanks for all your custom, craic and banter over the last 25 years, we had a savage time there.

"We won the battle but lost the war! But with heads held high we say goodbye. - Quinns may reopen at some stage by the banks, so think long and hard where you spend your hard earned money.

"The banks and government made a mess of this country the first time round and are being allowed to do it again!! - Slan agus adh mor oraibh!"

That's a shame - was always great craic during the football season.

Where are people supposed to get their All-Ireland tickets now?

General discussion / Cure for HIV found??
December 14, 2010, 07:50:39 PM
QuoteStem Cell Transplant Cures HIV In 'Berlin Patient'

On the heels of World AIDS Day comes a stunning medical breakthrough: Doctors believe an HIV-positive man who underwent a stem cell transplant has been cured as a result of the procedure.

Timothy Ray Brown, also known as the "Berlin Patient," received the transplant in 2007 as part of a lengthy treatment course for leukemia. His doctors recently published a report in the journal Blood affirming that the results of extensive testing "strongly suggest that cure of HIV infection has been achieved."

While Brown is the first person to ever be declared cured of HIV, his case paves a path for constructing a cure for HIV through genetically-engineered stem cells.

Last week, Time named another AIDS-related discovery to its list of the Top 10 Medical Breakthroughs of 2010. Recent studies show that healthy individuals who take antiretrovirals, medicine commonly prescribed for treating HIV, can reduce their risk of contracting the disease by up to 73 percent.

While these developments by no means prove a cure for the virus has been found, they can certainly provide hope for the more than 33 million people living with HIV worldwide. Alongside such findings, global efforts to combat the epidemic have accelerated as of late, with new initiatives emerging in the Philippines and South Africa this week.

QuoteScott Bakula couldn't believe how many people showed up for "A Leap of Faith — A Quantum Leap Retrospective" at Thursday's Comic-Con. More than 600 people filled Room 6A to hear the actor, all by himself, talk about a show that's been off the air since 1993. That's almost two decades.

But even with all that time passed, Quantum Leap lives on and not just in the hearts of many die-hard fans.

"The good news is that Don is working on the film script and has a big time Hollywood producer who wants to do it," said Bakula, then had to wait for the cheering to subside. "It's about time. But what I always thought would happen, happened... [that he's now too old for the role]. But Dean [Stockwell, who played Al] and I will have a part in it somehow.

"Don did say that as he was writing, he told me he was having trouble, 'getting you and Dean out of my head.' But I know he will do it."

Nope - not Tyrone  :D

Watched a documentary over the weekend regarding a boxing match in 1983 between Luis Resto and "Irish" Billy Collins Jr

QuoteOn June 16, 1983 Resto unexpectedly beat undefeated prospect Billy Collins Jr at Madison Square Garden in New York City in a 10-round unanimous decision. The fight was the undercard for a bout between Roberto Durán and Davey Moore.

However, Collins' father and trainer, Billy, Sr., discovered that Resto's gloves were thinner than normal. When Billy, Sr. reached out to shake Resto's hand, he felt only leather over fist. Screaming that he thought the gloves had no padding, Collins, Sr. demanded that the New York State Athletic Commission impound the gloves. An investigation revealed that someone had removed an ounce of padding from each of his gloves. However, it was obvious even before then that the gloves had been altered. Collins' eyes were swollen shut by the end of the 10th round, and the rest of his face was so badly swollen that it was impossible to believe a light puncher could have inflicted such damage.

Collins suffered a torn iris and permanently blurred vision, ending his career. He died only months later when he drove his car into a culvert while intoxicated. Some commentators have speculated that the loss of his livelihood drove him into a downward spiral. Collins' father has since postulated that his son committed suicide

After a month's investigation, the New York State Boxing Commission determined that Resto's trainer, Panama Lewis, had removed the padding from Resto's gloves. It also determined that Resto should have known the gloves were illegal. The commission suspended Resto's boxing license for at least a year. Since most state boxing commissions honor sanctions from other states, this effectively banned Resto from boxing in the United States. Resto's win was subsequently changed to a no contest.

In 1986, Lewis and Resto were both put on trial and found guilty of assault, criminal possession of a weapon (Resto's hands) and conspiracy. Prosecutors charged that the bout amounted to an illegal assault on Collins and that Resto should have known that the padding had been removed from his gloves. Resto served 2.5 years in prison.

At last report, Resto was living rent-free in the basement of the Morris Park Boxing Gym in the Bronx. After 15 years of trying to regain his license, he was finally allowed to work as a cornerman by New York State.

In 2007, Resto apologized to Collins' widow, Andrea Collins-Nile, who is suing the state of New York for not protecting her late husband. Resto also told Collins-Nile that in addition to removing padding from the gloves, Lewis placed plaster underneath his hand wraps, greatly—and illegally—increasing his punching power. The hand wraps had never been confiscated. Resto also disclosed that Lewis would break apart pills used to treat asthma and pour the medicine into his water bottles, giving Resto greater lung capacity in the later rounds of a fight.

Resto also visited Collins' gravesite and said, "I'm sorry for what I did to you". In 2008, he told the The Tennessean that he'd been burdened by guilt over his involvement in the scheme for almost a quarter century. At a 2008 press conference, Resto said that he knew Lewis had taken the padding out of his gloves and had done so at least twice before. However, Resto said, he didn't protest at the time even though he knew it was wrong. "At the time, I was young," he said. "I went along."

The 1983 incident and subsequent aftermath is covered in the HBO aired documentary Assault in the Ring. During the documentary, Resto also appears to confirm law enforcement's theory that the plot was centered around a large amount of money bet on Resto by a third party, who had met with Lewis prior to the fight.

QuoteThere was a time when a Frenchman only had to order a pint of beer and women would collapse at his feet with desire.

Well those days, they are, 'ow you say, fini!

The Irish accent was yesterday voted the world's sexiest - knocking the Gauls off the top spot they've held for decades.

Men with an Emerald Isle brogue, as promoted by stars like Colin Farrell and James Nesbitt, came top in a poll of 5,000 women worldwide.

The fall from grace of the French accent was laid firmly at the feet of president Nicolas Sarkozy, who has been accused of giving his countrymen a bad name by leering at women while married to Carla Bruni.

The Italian accent was deemed to be second most sexy followed by Scottish. The French only managed to limp into fourth place, just ahead of Australian. English was sixth.

The study also found six in ten women admitted they hade been succumbed to seduction by someone purely because of their accent.

And four out of ten said they would much rather go to bed with a man who had a nice accent compared with a gruff, harsh one.

The sexiest accents are: 1 Irish; 2 Italian; 3 Scottish; 4 French; 5 Australian; 6 English; 7 Swedish; 8 Spanish; 9 Welsh; 10 American.

QuoteA 20-year-old man from Ireland has been pronounced dead in hospital after he was pulled from the waters off Centre Island Tuesday morning.

Staff. Sgt Ron Tapley says thee friends had camped on the island overnight and went for a swim in the morning. The group was diving off the pier and swimming back to shore when two of the friends realized the third was not there.

They called 911 from a payphone just before 8 a.m., prompting the Marine Unit to send all personnel to the scene, Tapley says.

The man's unconscious body was pulled from about two metres of water into a police boat about 45 minutes after he had disappeared, police say. Footage from Chopper 24 showed the watercraft immediately speeding away from the scene while a paramedic was performing CPR feverishly on the victim.

The boat pulled up to the mainland shore where an ambulance was waiting. Paramedics were still performing CPR at the scene before leaving on an emergency run to hospital.

Footage captured by Chopper24 showed at least five Marine Unit boats searching the wavy waters off the shore of the island.

A pair of swimmers was seen sitting on a bench on the pier looking upset while other emergency responders look into the water off the railing.

The man was working in Canada on a summer work visa and police say they're notifying his family in Ireland.

Tapley says it is common for people to swim in the area where the incident occured, but it is uncommon for people to be diving in the area.

He says police believe the victim was a confident swimmer, but generally - people can't take swimming lightly.
The water was about 27 degrees Celcius at the time.

More to come.

#1 is where I'm going wrong

QuoteThe language of love can very, very easily get lost in translation. What may be perfectly acceptable when dating in Ireland can warrant a well-aimed slap in the face in the U.S.
Remember: it was America that invented "dating." It's not an Irish concept – but one that has been imported from across the Atlantic.

And even though it's an American import, the rules for dating in the U.S. differ vastly in many ways than the rules for dating in Ireland.

As such, this brief guide is intended for the Irish male who finds himself at a loss at what to do when dating an American girl.

1. Try not to get too drunk
This especially applies when you are on a first date. Although Irish girls are often fairly unimpressed at the sight of their date slurring his words and talking to inanimate objects, in many cases, it is the Irish girl who is even more drunk than her partner for the evening, so this problem can be avoided, and the Irish male doesn't have to be as careful in not getting too hammered. In general, however, American girls drink far, far less than Irish girls. And they can get pretty disgusted at the sight of their date making a total fool of himself.
This rule is probably the most critical in this guide – but is one that the Irish male typically grapples with the most. Remember: Americans often go on dates that are non-alcohol related – which can involve things such as "cups of coffee" and not going to the pub. The standard response from the Irish male to this activity in this situation might be: But where will my confidence come from?
It must come from within. When the date does take place in a pub or bar, the Irish male should take care to remember that the graph showing the relationship between pints and charm looks like this: it goes upwards initially, levels off after about three or four, and then at about six pints it takes a dramatic nosedive. In other words, it usually takes about six drinks before charm turns into sleaze.

2. Pay for everything
The U.S. may be the birthplace of the modern feminist movement, but when it comes to picking up the tab for drinks and dinner, American females are thoroughly old-fashioned. American girls will inevitably expect you to at least offer to pay for dinner, and if you do offer, most will gladly accept. The same goes for drinks. If you are on a first date, and you don't offer to foot the bill, don't expect a second. It doesn't matter that she is better educated than you, earns more than you and is likely to outlive you. She'll still expect you to pay. That's just how it is.

3. Play up the accent
If you have a fairly neutral Irish accent, then scrap it quickly – you won't sound very "Irish" to the American girl you are trying to impress. Go and watch "Darby O'Gill and the Little People," and try to talk like some of the characters in that movie. Sure, you won't sound genuinely Irish – simply because no one in Ireland talks like that – but the girl you are on a date with won't know that, and probably thinks that everyone in Ireland talks like Sean Connery in the 1959 classic.
Throw in a few Irish expressions here and there – even ones we don't really use, like, "To be sure, To be sure." Add a few more that you know the girl won't understand, thus making her curious, playing up your Irishness and impressing her.

4. Think of non-alcohol related date activities
Be creative in where you take her. Remember (as per point one) that Americans are not nearly as pub-centric as Irish people and don't need alcohol at every social occasion. Take her to an art exhibition and impress her with your knowledge of the early modernist period...

5. Be chivalrous
You don't have to put your coat over a puddle of water on the sidewalk so she doesn't wet her shoes, but you do have to hold doors open, pay for drinks (see point two), pull out her chair and so on. As a rule, you can't go wrong with chivalry with American women.

6. Try not to talk about your mother
Yes, it is hard being away from home and yes, no one makes bacon and cabbage like your mother can, but try to keep these details to yourself. If you go on too much about your mother, you will reconfirm a stereotype that your date probably already has about Irish guys and their mammies. So keep the mum discussion to a minimum. On the other hand, your date may be relieved to hear that your mother has no interest in being her new best friend.

7. Make vague references to a troubled past
Some Americans have a romantic idea of Irish people as inherently troubled.  This may make you seem more attractive in the eyes of the American you are pursuing, so play this up. If you had quite an idyllic childhood, then fabricate. Come out with lines like: "I remember the day the soldiers came to the village...They took every last man, woman and child...The screams, I still hear the screams..." before gazing away sadly into the distance. Refuse to elaborate, adding to your mystique.

8. Don't forget where you are from
Your true Irish character might frighten them, but that's okay. You do not need to pretend you are the personality that they would imagine an Irish person to be. Let your bitterness, begrudgery and down-to-earthiness shine. You might lose her, but you will still be YOU.

Was talking to a fella after our game last Sunday - and he told me that the point he scored in that game was the first point he'd ever scored playing Gaelic Football and he'd been playing for 18 years  :o

and it got me thinking .....................

What's the best point / goal you've ever scored?

As Loughshore Lad will probably testify I wan't the most prolific scorer with Ardboe at under-age level  :D - but one that sticks in my head was a point I scored against Aghaloo in a Division 3 minor match 10 years ago

Long, diagonal ball played into the corner that I ran out and collected in front of my marker.

Turned him and for some reason I thought to myself - I'll be able to put it over from here - bear in mind - I was out on the sideline on the 13-yard line on the wrong side for a right footer - and I let 'er go.

I never even saw it go over the bar  :( as I was knocked clean rotten by my marker  >:( - but I heard the roar of the crwod (all 18 people) - and knew it went over  8)

The current Liverpool badge is based around the traditional liver bird, which is placed inside a shield. Above the shield is a representation of Anfield's Shankly Gates bearing the title of club's famous theme tune, "You'll Never Walk Alone". The twin flames at either side are symbolic of the Hillsborough memorial, an eternal flame burns outside Anfield in memory of those who died in the disaster.
