Derry GAA are now under the management of Damian Barton, who replaced Brian McIver following their defeat to Galway in their All-Ireland qualifiers.

Will he be that effective? Your thoughts?

It's being discussed in the Derry club thread.

Derry are serial underperformers. Is this likely to change?

Le cunamh De. the last fallow period lasted 32  years so early days yet.
It would be nice to have Galway and Ros putting MGHU under pressure, wouldn't it ?

All depends on how many assignments Conor Lane gets ;-)

A lot more likely to change than Derry, I would think.

He is the 4th manager from the St Treas parish, Jim McKeever was manager in the 80s i think, Eamon Coleman and then Paddy Crozier, the parish takes in Ballymaguigan and "Newbridge" but it really should be called Creagh.

Upthecut

Was Roddy Gribben not manager of the 1958 team? They would be Creagh or Newbridge people.

In terms of winning things probably not. Promotion out of Div 2 and an Ulster final appearance would probably be seen as a job well done in Barton's 2 years. We simply don't have the players that the likes of Dublin and Kerry have.
His biggest problem will be getting the players to play with each other. There is huge club rivalry in our county and arguments seem to seep into the county team.

To me that's just a lazy easy excuse. I don't think there is a bigger club rivalry in Derry than the majority of other counties. Look at Tyrone club football I don't think there is any love lost between the clubs, Carrickmore,Errigal, Clonoe, Coalisland, Dromore,Omagh, Ardboe but they seem to be able to pull together alright.

I think the big problem is that an awful lot of players in Derry have no real desire to play for the county team and even some of the lads who do could take it or leave it.

Or maybe the quality of the players has been serially over-estimated?

That could indeed be the case. If they were actually serial underperformers it would always be the fault of the management as opposed to the players. I think we've had a few good managers over the years.
