General discussion / Jonesboro - Cemetery
August 28, 2018, 11:23:10 PM
Hi all, long time no post! I was chatting to an old pal last night and was reminded of this board and the wealth of information it harbours!

Anyone familiar with the Jonesboro area that can tell me if there is a RC graveyard near the village itself that's easy to find?  Will be up around there in the next few days and might take the opportunity to do a bit of digging (not literally!) for family tree research.

Thanks!

General discussion / Another hospital error
June 08, 2010, 10:22:01 PM
Surprised this hasn't been posted already.......

http://www.rte.ie/news/2010/0608/redmondm.html

The Health Service Executive has set up a helpline after a pregnant woman was given a misdiagnosis at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda that could have resulted in the death of her baby.

Melissa Redmond was told that her foetus was dead when in fact it was alive.

Mrs Redmond was given an abortive drug but decided to seek a second opinion that found no problem with her pregnancy.

A spokesperson for the hospital said the helpline was set up after a number of calls from concerned patients. The 1800 200 529 helpline will open at 9am tomorrow morning.

Earlier, the HSE said the misdiagnosis was 'an extraordinarily rare event'.

Speaking to the Irish Independent, Mrs Redmond said she decided to go for another scan at a GP with her husband Michael.

That scan confirmed the foetus was still alive and baby Michael was born in March.

In a statement, the HSE said it had carried out a review following the misdiagnosis.

Recommendations included training junior doctors in the 'correct methodology of scanning for early pregnancy' and a consultant is engaged in a process of verification with all junior doctors involved in scanning to ensure their competency.

No patient will receive the abortive drug until a miscarriage has been confirmed by a qualified sonographer.

The review of the case also found several problems with equipment, including an examination couch, which the HSE says has since been replaced.

The scanning machine, which was used at the time of this incident, has now been taken out of service, although the HSE did not say how long after the incident that took place.

A qualified sonographer is to take up their position in the Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit next month. They will be based in the unit from 9am to 1pm.

General discussion / Bondage Games

Ok, now that I have your attention... :)

Any bright (simple) ideas for quick and easy so-called team building/ice breaking exercises for a group doing a training programme?

I'm basically looking for a gap filler that won't bore everyone to tears and might even get a laugh!

I could put this in the WTF thread but I think it deserves a thread of its own.  It's worse it's getting...

Paedophilia link to homosexuality, not celibacy - cardinal

It is homosexuality, not celibacy, that is linked to paedophilia, the Vatican's secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, said yesterday, seeking to defuse the sex scandal that has battered the Catholic Church.

On a visit to Chile, Cardinal Bertone, dubbed the deputy pope, also said Pope Benedict would soon take more surprising initiatives regarding the sex abuse scandal, but he did not elaborate.

"Many psychologists and psychiatrists have shown that there is no link between celibacy and paedophilia but many others have shown, I have recently been told, that there is a relationship between homosexuality and paedophilia," he told a news conference in Santiago.

"This pathology is one that touches all categories of people and priests to a lesser degree in percentage terms," he said. "The behaviour of the priests in this case, the negative behaviour, is very serious, is scandalous."

Meanwhile, a new report commissioned by the Catholic Church in Germany has found that children were "sadistically tormented and also sexually abused" at a monastery in Pope Benedict's native Bavaria.

A lawyer investigating accusations of abuse in a Benedictine monastery school in Ettal presented a final report to the archdiocese of Munich and Freising yesterday, including 173 pages of victims' accounts of abuse.

"My investigations quite clearly show that for decades up until around 1990, children and adolescents were brutally abused in the Ettal monastery," Thomas Pfister said in a statement.

"The number of victims' accounts has increased significantly since the intermediary report of March 5th," added Mr Pfister, who said last month that hundreds of pupils had been beaten and some sexually abused at the school.

An archdiocese spokesman said he could not comment on the specific number of victims before a news conference today.

A survey published yesterday found that a quarter of German Catholics were considering quitting the church in the wake of reports of hundreds of cases, some many decades old, of sexual abuse by clerics. – (Reuters)

GAA Discussion / Club Loans/Mortgages
March 04, 2010, 11:19:59 PM
Guys I'm waiting on an official answer on this but in the meantime do any of you have any experience in a club getting loans/mortgages and so on?  I presume if it's a sizeable amount the county board has to give permission and the trustees would have to sign any applications etc?

I thought I must have picked this story up wrong when I heard it on the radio this evening, but apparently not...

Explosive reached Ireland after failed test

A quantity of explosive, found in a flat on Dorset Street in Dublin this morning, was brought into Ireland following a failed security operation in Slovakia.

The explosive was one of eight pieces of contraband planted by the authorities in the luggage of unsuspecting passengers at Bratislava Airport in Slovakia last weekend as part of a test of security procedures.

Seven were detected by airport security, but the eighth - 90g of research development explosive or RDX - was put in the luggage of a Slovakian electrician who lives and works in Dublin.

The 49-year-old unwittingly brought the material to Dublin when he returned from Christmas holidays.

Gardaí were eventually alerted this morning following a call from police in Bratislava and the flat on Dorset Street was sealed off.

During the operation, the adjoining homes and businesses were evacuated as the Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit removed the explosive for further analysis.

Both Gardiner Street and Lower Dorset street were closed off for about an hour.

The Slovakian man was arrested at the scene, but gardaí are now satisfied that he is innocent and he was released from custody this afternoon. He will not face charges.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said the Slovakian Minister for the Interior has conveyed his Government's profound regret for this incident to the Justice Minister Dermot Ahern.

Minister Ahern said he was very concerned about the fact that the gardaí were not alerted for three days and has asked for a full report.

Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy has appointed Detective Chief Superintendent Martin McLaughlin to establish the full background to this incident.

The Slovakian Minister has told Minister Ahern that his government will cooperate fully with the Garda investigation.

General discussion / Class Demonstration
October 09, 2009, 03:23:03 PM
I have to present a half hour mock up classroom situation teaching in some area of IT.  I teach a bit of it anyway so it's not a big deal, but with about 15 others having preceded me (in different subjects), I'm looking for ideas on something that might just entertain. I can choose to teach ANYTHING IT-related - any bright ideas out there? (And no, I don't think showing them how to find porn sites would help my assignment marks!)

GAA Discussion / Replays/Extra Time
June 08, 2009, 03:40:09 PM
What's the story with extra time and replays?  I thought there was to be extra time in any drawn game this year but was told yesterday it was only the first round - yet I've just seen Leinster Quarter final fixtures and they has extra time if necessary?  Can someone refresh  my memory as to what exactly was agreed??

General discussion / Ebuddy mobile
April 22, 2009, 04:19:32 PM
Anyone using ebuddy mobile?  If i have it running and I get a text message at the same time the phone freezes and won't do a thing until I disconnect the battery and start again, which is a bit of a nuisance.  Just wondering if anyone can shed on light on whether it's the phone or the application??
