Intermediate final in Sligo finished as a draw. Big headache for the CCC in Sligo now with the SHC and SFC finals down as a double header next Sunday, several St Farnan's players involved with the Western Gaels team in the hurling final. The Sligo champions play the Leitrim champions on October 22nd so it has to be played next weekend. Bonkers to be in this situation when Sligo were finished so early.

Senior football semi final between Tourlestrane and Tubbercurry finished 1-11 apiece so I see the CCC in Sligo have gone for a double header next week - SFC semi final replay and then the IFC final replay. Hurling final deferred obviously.

Thats a very strange decision that denied K/C a win over Claregalway, saw the video on facebook last night. The ref gave a hop ball when he thought Shane Walsh had taken too long over a 45 that was to win the game.

He may also have been taking into account how long it took Walsh to actually arrive at the scene; the radio commentators made some reference to it.  In the other Intermediate semi', Williamstown looked home and hosed, leading by 6 with time practically up. Then 'Aer Arann' (courtesy GBFM!) converted a penalty to bring it back to 3. In the 6th and final minute of stoppage time, they scored another goal to send it to extra-time. W'town eventually won with a converted 45, nearly the last kick.

It's about time someone was caught for time-wasting at the end of a game.

Surprised to see the neighbours Kilmaine beaten in the Mayo junior final at the weekend.
The Galway junior representatives in Connacht this year will be the weakest in a long time.
Neither has much of a chance of winning it.

I see he was wearing a compression shirt as a top on the sideline to show off his guns. Even the lack of a tan can't stop him strutting about like a peacock.

Having led an unfancied Lahardane to their first ever adult county title, he could have laid buck naked on a tanning bed on the sideline and no one in Lahardane would have objected !

Always easy to say that in hindsight. He made a few sub appearances earlier in the championship and looked well off the pace.

Played brilliant stuff tonight though - 5 points and pulled the strings throughout

Anyone who has seen Dillion's last few appearences for Mayo will know how not-odd his omissions have been. A great servant for his county but he was done at the same time Horan was.

Galway Senior final on Sunday. Corofin going for 5-in-a-row v Mountbellew/Moylough going for their first since 1986. (Lost their last 2 finals in 2009 and 2 years ago). Corofin the obvious favourites but are showing aging signs and creaked their way past Annaghdown in the semi'. Some say that is their bad game out of the system but I don't necessarily agree. They're a long time on the road and, of their main forwards, Ml Farragher tended to play more out the field recently, Ian Burke was well held last day and Gary Sice just looked so tired and off-the-pace. M/M seem fresher and have been putting up fair scores in the past few rounds, always a good sign, and if they play to their own strengths are a good bet at 5/2 (PPs).

Who else do Mountbellew have apart from Michael Daly? Is Joe Bergen still.togging out?

Barry McHugh and Michael's brother John is back after serious injury last year and playing very well apparently. Joe Bergin is still togging out for them alright.

Yup, Bergin is still there and playing well as is Cathal Kenny.  John Daly and Barry McHugh would be two other notable players.  McHugh is an excellent free taker and has been a key man for MM so far in the championship.  Their a young team overall with about half of the starting 15 U21 but they have been very successful all the way up through underage and will give Corofin a right good rattle this weekend I think - hope they win it as we could do with a changing of the guard in senior football.

Did Galway ever sort out that mess with Turloughmore and the illegal/maybe legal player yet?

Is it true that Portumna would be looking at a relegation game to remain in senior hurling depending on the outcome?

DRA sorted it earlier this week, Turloughmore lose the points and Portumna go through. Playing Castlegar this weekend.

DRA ruled against Turloughmore. Portumna through to the preliminary quarter-finals this weekend. Winners go through to the real quarter-finals after.

Corofin comfortably beat Mountbellew Moylough this afternoon.  Totally dominant from first to last minute and the game was over as a contest when they got 2 excellent goals early in the second half despite being down to 14 men - Cathal Silke with a straight red late in the first half.  Joe Bergin also got the line late in the second half.  That's 5 in a row now for Corofin and despite their scare in the semi, they are still a step ahead of everyone else in Galway at the minute.

It's comforting to know that, despite all the turmoil and change in the world, Joe Bergin is still Joe Bergin.

Brigids B hammered Kilglass Gaels in the Junior final here while Glaveys beat Fuerty by two points for their second Inter title in three years in a cracker.

Ballintubber eased into the Mayo SFC final next weekend beating Claremorris 3-16 to 2-9. That scoreline probably flatters Claremorris being honest as Tubber took Diarmuid O'Connor and Alan Dillon off early in the 2nd half and became quite disjointed afterwards. Castlebar and Garrymore finished in a draw, 1-11 a piece. Replay scheduled for Wednesday at 8pm so the winners will be at a big disadvantage for the final.

In the Intermediate Championship, Kiltimagh and Moy Davitts will contest the final next week after beating Louisburgh and Islandeady respectively.

Does that mean they won inter & got promoted in 2015, got relegated in 2016 and won inter again this year? Or how does promotion / relegation work there?

Ya, exactly that. The championships are split into groups of six (A and B), where the top four in A after the group stage go to the knockout stages while the top two in B join them. The bottom two in A get relegated to the B group the next year. The bottom two in B play a relegation play-off to decide who goes down. The newly promoted team goes into the B group in the grade above the following year. So if you totally tank a year in the A group you can't actually be relegated, but you'll only ever get there by merit anyways. The structure was changed a few years ago based on recommendations by a review committee chaired by Kevin McStay, and has worked pretty well so far.

Glaveys v Kiltimagh/Moy Davitts should be an interesting match-up as Glaveys have experience with this from two years ago and look better set up to be competitive in Connacht than they were then.

Thought MM would give Corofin more of a game, obviously the semi final was a wake up call. MM probably would have more joy if they'd drawn them in the semi.

MM were just not physically strong enough to cope with Corofin - they were dominated in most sectors of the pitch.  Strange why MM decided to play against the wind even though they won the toss and playing one of their better forwards around the middle didn't make a whole pile of sense to me anyway!  To be honest, I think it would have made little difference such was the mood of Corofin yesterday.

After seeing the game yesterday I'd agree Annaghdown are a better team than MM, now Corofin were outstanding yesterday, a completely different team to the day they played Annaghdown but MM were disappointing. Presuming Brigids are favourites for the Roscommon championship they'll be out for revenge if they get to meet them on 12th November. Corofin were very impressive though, they'll be hard to stop in Connacht anyway.

Unlike Corofin, Brigids are in full rebuild mode. The B team that won junior easily was mostly U23 players, so they're using the B side to develop players for the senior team, which is now filled with a lot of young lads itself. Leaders like Frankie, Mango, the AI-wining captain Gearoid Cunniffe and others are now gone. The captain of the B team was actually Robbie Kelly, a member of the AI-winning side. The biggest addition from last year would be that Peter Domican has returned from Dubai and looks to be back to his best.

They hammered their opponents in the senior final by about 25 points in the group stages a few weeks ago, and while that was partly to do with Brigids needing the win and Gaels already being quailified, it's hard to see them overturning Brigids a few weeks later.

Serious strength in depth for Corofin, Daithi Burke and 2 U21's who played in an All Ireland final all on the bench. Its not hard to see why their strong favourites for the province.

Is the Mayo final this weekend? Not much rest for the winner of tonights reply if it is.

Senior football and hurling finals on in Sligo on Sunday, Calry v Western Gaels in hurling and Tourlestrane v Eastern Harps football. Calry and Tourlestrane should retain their titles, nothing new for Calry but it'll be historic in the football as no team has won back-to-back senior titles since St. Pat's in 1988 & 89.

The Junior football final is on Saturday with Tourlestrane also involved against Ballymote. Ballymote might have it tight but should win and make a quick return to intermediate, they will be in Connacht either way.

Mayo club championship reduced to farce

Last night, Castlebar Mitchels played Garrymore in the Mayo senior football championship semi-final. In three days' time, the winners of that game will play a county final. Waiting for them will be Ballintubber, who eight days ago faced Hollymount-Carramore in a quarter-final replay, before beating Claremorris in their semi-final last Sunday.

And all this mad rush to ensure that, allowing a week for a replay if the final ends in a draw, Mayo have a representative in the Connacht club championship to face Leitrim champions Mohill on November 4th.

To say this is a ridiculous state of affairs is to state the obvious. Maybe Mayo's ten-game run through the 2017 championship explains it, and maybe it doesn't, but either way the idea that so many club players have to travel from Galway or from Dublin, as would have been the case for players on all four teams asked to play the biggest game of their year under lights in the middle of the week, is pretty shabby.

The Mayo champions will either beat Mohill, or they won't on November 4th. But the fact that the efforts of all the club players in Mayo are demeaned by being asked to play such important games on a Wednesday night, to facilitate the Connacht club championship never ceases to amaze.

Ballintubber have never won a Connacht club title, but they've only ever won three Mayo championships. Maybe they'll care about the Connacht club championship, but maybe that'll only happen when they get there and they're finished celebrating.

The provincial club championships can be glorious, can provide us with some brilliant games, and keep us all entertained in the winter if you can't face the Premier League or the rugby, but let's keep some perspective, please.

For club players of every stripe, your county championship is the blue riband. It's the be-all and end-all. It needs to be treated as such.

The Connacht Council set a date in their diary for the first round of their provincial club championship, and just like that, the Mayo County board has to scramble madly to have a team for that date.

This is putting the cart before the horse on a grand scale – it's telling David Lean to hurry up and chop 75 minutes off Lawrence of Arabia to ensure it fits on a double-bill with a Hammer horror movie.
Serial winners

There are a number of football clubs in the entire country for whom the provincial and All-Ireland club championships are a major goal – Corofin; Castlebar Mitchels; St Brigid's; Kilcoo, given the regularity with which they win the Down county championship; Slaughtneil; Crossmaglen, until recently; Dr Crokes; Portlaoise; Rhode; St Vincent's. Am I forgetting anyone?

And what unites all these clubs is that they're all serial winners. Their county championship only has reduced meaning for them because they keep winning it. For everyone else the county final is the date in the diary that has real meaning.

The chance to prove yourself the best team in the province is a nice challenge, and if you were to go on a run and win a few games, well that would be great too. But defeat is never too bitter a pill to swallow, because let's face it – from the minute you won your county final, you were in bonus territory.

County boards should never unduly hasten their county championships to facilitate those nine or ten clubs who care about what comes next – in fact, it's madness to think that they ever would in the first place.

The only people put out by not starting the provincial club championships until all of the county finals are finished, are the winners of the other county championships – and those lads are happy enough.

Wait until you have all the teams are ready to play, and then play every game to a finish – as many periods of extra-time as required, or a free-taking competition – but no draws, and three or four weekends would see all the provincial competitions taken care of.

If that means some of the provincial championships have to be finished in January, then so be it – I would have far less of a problem with that than with what is going on in Mayo at the moment. Those teams who would have to wait until after Christmas for defeat to come their way in the provincial championship would still have their county medals. All the losers will have from last night are regrets.

Playing county semi-finals on a Wednesday evening in late October, and then asking the winners to line out in a county final four days later, is unconscionable. It demeans the idea of the county championship for no good reason.

Some utter nonsense there. It's Mayo's own fault they couldn't finish their championship in a more professional manner, and to suggest the other four counties in Connacht should put the provincial championships on hold is so cross-eyed in its thinking I'm a little staggered it was published in the Times by what I can only assume is a professional journalist. With the ultimate goal of being able to run off both the provincial and All-Ireland club championships in the same calendar year, the suggestion the provincial championship be pushed back because one county has shat the bed is retrograde thinking in the extreme. The only solution is Mayo re-organising their championship so more rounds are played in the lull after the league, or rounds are played in the middle of the championship. The solution offered is, simply put, not a tenable one. He even seriously suggests a provincial club match be decided via a free kick competition..!

This makes the worst excesses of Martin Breheny pale, to be honest.

I'd agree with all that except I think Western Gaels have a great chance in the hurling. Hard to see Harps beating Tourlestrane. Tubber the first day was the time to beat Tourlestrane.....they're up to full pace now and will probably win comfortably.

I find myself in total agreement with Syferus on this one. The 10 games run of the Mayo Senior team was not the cause of this fiasco, rather it was was the crazy decision not to play the final round-robin game of the club championship earlier in the season. We have prided ourselves on our fixture programme in Mayo and have had our finals played off much earlier even in 96 after a replayed All Ireland. County teams shouldn't be allowed to encroach any further on club games. Clubs have only themselves to blame for this as they voted to postpone a round. As long as they continue to send sheep to county board meetings it won't change.

As an aside, there have been incredible crowds in McHale Park on the last two Weds evenings. Friday night and Saturday county night matches have proven very popular up to this but the crowd for stand alone club games were amazing. The number of neutrals from within Mayo was remarkable not to mention the north-Galway contingent. Allowing for the difficulty in having players travel who are working or in college in Dublin there is food for thought there.

Minor Final Brigids 4-17 Clann 4-8.

Brigids had their fill today despite the two late goals giving the scoreline gloss. Well run clubs win titles, it's up to the chasing pack to put work in to develop players. Brigids won a cracking minor final today too and that's the engine that will keep them knocking around the top in Roscommon and Connacht.

Poor game in Sligo today.

Tourlestrane deserving winners but made it tougher than they should have. The old guard are still carrying Harps but they do seem to have some good young players coming through, they'll really struggle when Donovan, Gallagher, Taylor and the Cryans pack it in though as they're carrying the team at present and all are well in their 30s now.

Think Tourlestrane could do 4 or 5 in a row at this rate and it's not even a vintage team for them, much weaker than the team they had 10-15 years ago.

What age is Shane O'Grady for Harps? Looks a decent prospect. Liam Gaughan has the ability but I think will need a few years of gym work before he's ready for county. Tourlestrane are a solid side but lack any real star quality to make any impact in Connacht. I can't see them causing Castlebar any problems who could score goals for fun if they saw the ease at which balls in on the square caused mayhem in the Tourlestrane defence today.

Good final in McHale Park. Castlebar were worthy winners but it was in doubt until the last few minutes. Ballintubber with the wind took a couple of points of a lead into the second half. They settled quicker than Mitchels but never pulled away. Good tactical play on both sides. Paddy Durcan took up Diarmuid O Connor with Ger McDonogh on Cillian. Shot taking on both sides was superb in the first 20 mins with every shot at scoring being successful and no wides. James Durcan, twin of Paddy was doing damage and was very unlucky to be black-carded. Ballintubber stretched the lead to three points but Castlebar came back with some great scores to lead by two. Cillian O Connor got a second yellow but it only served to galvanise Ballintubber. A goalbound effort from DOC was blocked down and a monster (second) point for McDonogh won the game.

Mitchel's were greatly improved on their form in recent games and despite playing midweek, finished much the stronger. Signs of wear and tear on Ballintubber and their period at the top of club football in Mayo may be coming to an end. Mitchel,s will need to improve up front if they wish to progress but they are building momentum. Barry Moran was greatly involved after being invisible in the last few games. Paddy Durcan was immense and must have pushed Ger McDonogh for MOTM. Well balanced Mitchel's side with James Durcan leaving a calling card for the watching Mayo manager (as did Michael Plunkett of Ballintubber). And a young Johnny Maughan at corner-back did all that was asked of him. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Cracking Intermediate final between Kiltimagh and Moy Davitts ended in a draw. Kiltimagh led by six points with less than ten minutes left and looked good value. Moy Davitt's score 1 04 to lead by a point only for Kilty to draw level. Replay next Saturday.

I think your knowledge of Ballyhaunis hurling needs an update. Whatever they have done was done without any aid from John Prenty who would be seen as anti-hurling in Ballyhaunis. Perhaps that knowledge will make you change allegiance. ;D
Incidentally Ciaran Charlton who won a hurling title with Tooreen yesterday performed well for Kiltimagh in the Inter Football Final today.

Not in the least. With Pearses winning their first Roscommon title in nearly 30 years it will be a very novel Connacht pairing next time out for both Tooreen and PP.

Congrats to Tourlestrane. Great achievement to do back to back titles for the first time in almost 30 years. They were always the team to beat and despite some difficult times against Tubbercurry the first day and in yesterdays final they did the business. Well done too to the Co Board on the excellent streaming of the games. They deserve criticism a lot of the time but certainly deserve praise when they get things right like this. Good luck in Connacht. It'll be tough but I'm sure they'll represent us well. Fair play also to Harps. Were expected to be turned over in the quarter, semi and well beaten in the final but showed their mettle each time. They will struggle to replace those older guys when the time comes but maybe they'll be around a little while yet.

No. It's a way of saying that they don't work hard enough. Reape played well last Sunday but on two occasions in the second half when play broke down in the Kiltimagh back line he failed to make any effort to tackle the player emerging with the ball even though he was closest to the play. I didn't mention Irwin.

It was exactly the same words bandied around when Irwin was in the conversation a couple years ago. Honestly, I've seen enough of him to say he probably is too cumbersome for senior IC.

Reape I'd need to see more of to be sure of but slowness in mind or body by itself can cause pretty much everything you've just said.

I've seen reems of forwards who try their best but couldn't catch up to a back who has a head start on them let alone tackle them no matter what they tried so at times they just don't engage at all. AOS would be the best example of that at senior at the moment.

Rumours flying around that Williamstown have been dumped out of the Galway intermediate championship and Aran Islands are through to the final. Nothing official as yet but that seems to be the case. If there's any hold up then a good chance St John's will not have an opponent for November 5th. Anyone have anything concrete on that?

That's the word down here alright. Another case of a player supposedly playing illegally in the States.
They will appeal of course - which means it's unlikely the Galway final will have produced a winner in time for the Connacht series.
Unless Claregalway get nominated to represent Galway in it.

Rumours flying about alright but no official word yet. Thing is if Williamstown are flung out they will surely appeal it themselves which will drag things out even further. One of them still have to play Claregalway in the final yet.

They did but half their team plays hurling for Cappataggle who are in the senior hurling semi-finals and hurling is king in that part of the county so how much investment Gabriel's put into their Connacht campaign would be questionable I'd say.

I'd hope for good game in Tuam in two weeks. Corofin basically threw everything they had into the CF last year (not even at the races come the AISF) and this is a tie with plenty of bad blood, though that's mainly on the Corofin end.

Brigids have such a young team now they're playing with house money in a sense, Corofin and Mitchels are still in win-now mode. Were Brigids to actually win it would seriously upend the accepted order in Connacht.

Are they really? Looking at the Brigids team that started the Roscommon final apart from few young players its a mostly experienced team with lads aged 26 to their early to mid 30s.

Only Johnny Murray, Domican, Ronan Stack, Darren Dolan, Ian and Senan Kilbride and McHugh are still starting from the AI winning side only four years ago. A couple of other panelists on the bench and that's about it. Very different side.

Castlebar's team this year is very young. They've had a big turnover of players in the last 18 months. Barry Moran is the oldest at 31 but apart from that I don't think there's anyone over 27/28. Johnny Maughan would be the youngest at 19.

They did find it much more difficult to win the county this year, so it remains to be seen if they've dropped in standard.

They did but half their team plays hurling for Cappataggle who are in the senior hurling semi-finals and hurling is king in that part of the county so how much investment Gabriel's put into their Connacht campaign would be questionable I'd say.
They're an extremely average side anyway even apart from the clash.

Very hard to judge junior sides I find. They beat Clonbur who won the junior AI a few years ago. Cappy have never been in a senior hurling semi-final though so that will be absolutely massive for them. Unfortunately for Gabriel's it will really hit their campaign.

My understanding is that there was a big turnover in Mitchel's personnell

When they won a few years ago they Had Cunniffe, the Feeney brothers, Kevin Filan and a few others too whod been around a long time

Moy Davitts won the Mayo Intermediate tonight. Scored 1-1 right at the death to snatch it off Kiltimagh. Hard to know how they'll go in Connacht next weekend. Brian Reape picked up an injury in the 2nd half and I'm sure they'll be enjoying the celebrations over the next few days!

I suspect winning the County Inter means an awful lot more to them than next week's game.

I doubt they'll even be a Galway representative in Connacht intermediate this year. The Aran/Williamstown saga is going to Connacht council now. Claregalway still waiting in the final.

Aran's appeal to the Connacht council was thrown out so the county final is going ahead on Saturday at 1pm with the winners having to make the trip to Sligo the next day, hardly ideal preparation but that's Galway GAA for you. This championship was started back in May and has dragged on until now. Maybe if all club action wasn't completely suspended for most of the summer these lads wouldn't be going to America and these appeals wouldn't happen.

The young lads would still go. Clubs need to be more careful in who they play. Others getting away with it for years isn't a great defence if someone challenges you.

I think there are still avenues that Aran can go down yet so I wouldn't be fully confident of that game going ahead.
Not 100% sure why they have left it until Saturday to play it.
I think Claregalway minors are playing in Connacht club on Friday night (they won the minor A this year for the first time ever) and they would have a few involved with the inters also so maybe that's the reason I'm not quite sure.

Then that's their decision, they're only young once and good luck to them. If there was championship games during the summer you can be sure the number of lads going would drop, in Galway anyway. Last summer about 6 lads from Corofin went and didn't miss one game, madness!

Re the game being on Saturday I think time had to be left for Aran to go to the DRA and then claregalway requested it be played on Saturday because of the minor match on Friday evening. It had originally been fixed for tonight under lights in Ballinasloe but that was changed again shortly after being announced which makes me wonder if Aran had made their intentions to bring their appeal further known.

If you listened to the PR in that Guardian documentary you'd swear they'd be naming two or three teams made exclusively of minority players at underage. The fact is not enough is being done almost anywhere to integrate new families (even from other parts of Ireland) into the GAA system.

Ballyhaunis has a surprisingly small catchment area which is mainly confined to the town itself. With the Roscommon border on one side and Eastern Gaels and Aghamore on the other two sides it is very hemmed in. It has the highest non-indigenous population of any town in Ireland and has a huge integration and participation programme, but the drop off rate is even higher amongst the newcomers as boys approach minor grade. Amalgamation with Aghamore must be a necessity as there is a fierce rivalry between the clubs.

They were no minority players on the hurling team that won the Mayo title for Ballyhaunis last year. Getting a lad to turn up for a couple training sessions is very different to integration. One looks good only when a reporter comes calling.

Claregalway won the Galway intermediate final today by 3 points.
Were 11 up early in second half which was whittled down to 2 near the end but they hung on.
They play St Johns from Sligo tomorrow in Connacht.
Can't see them winning to be honest.
I know what my body is like the day after a championship game anyway - couldn't imagine playing again that day.

It's not for the want of trying. Underage teams have good integration. As lads get older they are more concerned with earning money than playing sport. It's not something we haven't seen in Ireland a generation or so  ago when lads living in seaside towns wouldn't tog during the tourist season.
Once they reach adulthood and if they have papers most lads will move away to cities and to England. Simple economics dictates as there is nothing for them in Ballyhaunis. Easy for politicos to slap the club on the back for promoting integration but a few jobs and regional development might do more.

Of course there's dynamics with people leaving - same story in Ballagh, Castlerea, any of the other towns around Ballyhaunis with similar populations. Young people go off to college and get a job in Galway, Dublin, maybe Sligo or Athlone if they're lucky. The best outcome is usually finding lads with enough connection to either their mates or their club that they'll travel home to play but the idea of spending a round trip of 3+ hours at least once a week night and then the same again at the weekend is a form of madness many just can't tolerate. Going to England will sharply decline in the coming years anyways, they might as well have tattooed "Fúck off immigrants" to their foreheads at this stage.

I still do think despite all the factors it's a big black mark that a town the size of Ballyhaunis can't field a panel of 20+ lads aged between 15-18 in any given year. Much smaller clubs nearby manage it.

Amazing game in McHale. Glaveys showed great resolve to dig the game out when they got hit with the goal in the second half and Davitts took control. Andy Glennon and Cathal Heneghan were absolutely excellent for Glaveys, while Brian Reape was almost as good at the other end.

Incredible achievement for Tooreen. First time since 1988 a non-Galway side has won a Connacht Inter or the old Senior hurling title. I can only imagine what today will mean to the hurling community in Tooreen. Really special.

Elsewhere Tooreen won the intermediate hurling final, that the first time a non-Galway team has won it?
Yes, I think that's accurate in relation to the intermediate hurling.  In fairness, Mayo clubs have come close on a few occasions in the past few years and looks like this was a well deserved win for Tooreen.

Andy Glennon for Glaveys would surely be a better option at full forward for Kevin McStay than trying to make full forwards out of midfielders or half forwards?

Rumours he's been invited back and has accepted.
He dropped out last year after scoring something  like 3-2 in his first game.
I believe he couldn't then commit to the training schedule required .

Brigids will more than likely beat Balla in the final. Annagh Rivers more than likely will be the best hope of a Mayo winner next Friday. What are Tulsk like?
Maybe they will but what are you basing a Brigids win on?
He is probably basing it on beating Galway opposition who have been the best at Connacht minor level the last few years.

Knockmore minors played both in the summer. Brigids were a step above all opposition we faced. I was surprised Balla  beat Westport in the final as they have been the best in that age group all along the way.  Hope they can surprise me again and bring a title back to Mayo.

If Andy can commit for the full year he has the potential to be every bit as important an addition as any of Cregger and the Dalys returning. Your cool clean hero seems to be playing his cards well so far this off-season..

I think people are overstating the two games in two days thing. How much do ye think it would impair performance? 50%? 30%? I'd say between 5-10% at a guess. While our teams are a bit more competitive at inter and junior due to a sensible restructuring I think it's fair to say not many would have favoured John's had Claregalway got a 6 day break so it looks like even with some drop off they were still able to win. As I said, disappointing that John's couldn't capitalise on this factor and home advantage but credit to Claregalway.

Why is the standard so poor in Sligo club, honestly? Even Ballymote (a town club that should never be at Junior in any county in the first place) made tough work of a Kilglass side that were hammered by a B team in the county final until the late goal. At club it's very possible for a well coached group of lads to win Connachts and AIs, even from small counties. Even the Sligo county teams seem much more competitive than their club representatives. It's a bit of a mystery. Mitchels are so punch drunk from continuous football now you'd hope that Tourlestrane could give them a proper go.

The present club scene is poor enough alright but it was better in the past, Tourlestrane might well be some way ahead of the rest but I'm not sure their current team would match up to their team of a decade ago, O'Hara, Durkin, McGowan et al. Most other teams certainly wouldn't. Harps and Curry both reached provincial finals in the noughties and defeated notable opposition in that time, and generally the teams were competitive in Connacht. Since Harps were flattened by Brigid's in 2010 it largely hasn't been the case.

As regards Ballymote, loath as I am to defend them, they were actually a fairly decent team in the noughties and up to about 2011/12, then the decline set in and set in hard. They were always a tad short of being genuine title challengers but they posed Curry, Harps and Tourlestrane as much trouble as any other team managed at the time. But the underage was struggling badly after a few good minor/U21 teams moved on, and that eventually told when the senior team started to break up. Were a mess the last few years but they got themselves together again this year and won the junior well in the end, they'll find intermediate a tougher prospect but they could stay up given there's a few teams there that aren't hectic, mind you Easkey were unlucky to be relegated from senior last year and fell another grade this time.

As regards them being a town team, unlike Tubber they do also have a rural area so yes they should be doing better, but that's a problem that's not theirs alone. A few town/urban teams, not least ourselves, should be doing better really, like John's in truth shouldn't be out of senior but had suffered a kinda similar fate as Ballymote, worryingly their underage seems to be in a fairly bad way still, and the other town teams are not much better. Our own underage is as good as its been for a long long time, but whether that can translate into a stronger adult setup only time will tell. Harps and Molaise Gaels are having a good run of it at underage now but given the sheer size of their catchment areas they have few excuses not to, and their senior teams are underperforming as well. Tourlestrane are doing very well for the area that they have and credit to them, it runs deep over that end of the county.

Further to the town thing, in fairness outside of Sligo the towns in the county are relatively small, both Ballymote and Tubber would be smaller than Boyle and Castlerea for example. And down the far side of Ros I see Ballinasloe were relegated to junior football, now that's a scandal. And while Kilglass got well beaten by a B team, not many clubs in Connacht would have a second string to match that of St. Brigid's.

Yeah 20 in Galway always struck me as too many. Played a few championship games there back in the day (with the college), and came acrosss teams that were way off senior level. They probably would have struggled at intermediate, but when only 1 team goes down then bad teams can survive for years.

They did. Really should be doing a lot better given it's a town of 7,000+ people. Granted there is a lot of hurling out that direction surrounding the town, soccer is popular in the town and Garbally College is known as a rugby school above anything else. Still it doesn't stop their neighbours Caltra competing at senior level who have a very small pick compared to them. Probably a lot of potential there if they can ever sort themselves out.

The last time Ballinashloe won the senior was 1980. They are number 2 in the roll of honour with 20 titles , behind Tuam on 25
Corofin were nowhere in 1980. Now they are just one behind them, on 19.
This is a Mouview theme. Ballinasloe always had representatives on the great Galway teams of the past, especially via John and Cyril Dunne. Now there is nobody.

If you look at the history Athenry won 3 county titles with the De Wets in the early 1900s so an Athenry footballer is a bit like mean reversion...

I would agree with you to a certain extent. There were better individual players in the Tourlestrane team of 10 years ago because of the 3 lads mentioned but the current team are much more balanced and there is also a good bench which wouldn't have been the case back then.

Annagh Rovers beat Tulsk 0-10 to 0-03 in the Connacht B final, the A final is on at the minute.

Edit: Brigids 2–10 Balla 1-05, if anything the score flatters Balla as their goal was a point attempt that the keeper fluffed and Brigids missed a penalty too. Well done to the Kiltoom/Cam men.

That pitch is some hovel and it's not doing Corofin's style of play any favours. Corofin are a much, much better side and got a handle on the game as it went on but some times they are far too goal hungry and they passed a few good chances up there in the first 15 minutes. I think they'll kick on and win by about 8 points in the second half.

Dear oh dear that was never a free for Bridget's to force the draw there with the last kick of the game. I think the ref was just so used to blowing for frees to Bridget's that he blew it out of habit.

Don't think so, Brigids got a litany of very dubious frees. There was on stage in the game where Corofin were 4 or 5 up and he blew up Brigids for a late free when Corofin were pouring men forward and would have had a great goal chance. I thought it was under the provision he was going to black card the Brigids man for the late hit after the ball was laid off but he only booked him then.

Can see Corofin winning the replay handily, they're a much better team and the referee kept Brigids in it.

Ref was shocking but over the game favored corofin. Last free was soft And really nearly every free it was a guess which way he would give it. He let Molloy away with alate hit but booked Kilbride for something similar. Corofin scoredfrom a clear throw ball and gave a free out when Brigids had cornor back pinned on the end line. Very inconsistent.

All genuine frees. Lads wrap forwards up, pulling and hitting from both sides and expect the ref to penalise over-carrying. If he wanted he could bring the ball forward for most frees as Corofin are constantly within 10m of the kicker. He got the calls right and McGrath is lucky to be there still.

Apart from the last vital free which was clearly never a free. There was at least one other dubious one where the Bridget's player was just held up. The rest I'd say were fair enough.

I assume the one you're moaning about him booking Kilbride is for the one where he pulled play back when Corofin had an overload of players running on to book him? He clearly favoured Brigids, heavily. He gave them soft free after soft free in scoring areas all second half long, the Brigids no 15 got a free for throwing himself to ground on at least three or four occasions.

It was a very biased display in favour of Brigids, to say it wasn't is strange, to portray the other way is insane.

I won't ignore your rubbish. If you want to ignore the referee pulling back a situation where there was a potential goal chance on so he can issue a yellow card for a black card offence then fair enough but I think it says a lot about the level of bias you bring.

I call the game as I see it. The referee heavily favoured Brigids with his decisions, they got countless soft frees, he pulled play back when Brigids were in big trouble. You equated a shoulder to shoulder hit after the Brigids player had kicked the ball out of play to a frontal charge on the Corofin player after he had laid the ball off for an overload attack on the 45 yard line with loads of space. That told me all I needed to know about the impartiality of your comments. In that particular situation the play should have been let run and the Brigids player black carded after the advantage had been allowed. In the other situation the Brigids player may have got a free but it wasn't a booking, both players went shoulder to shoulder with the Brigids player hacking the ball away first.

The better team won and I think the scoreline flattered Brigids.

Corofin were screwed last year by the referee who did not punish Crokes systematically fouling them with impunity. They're still a very good side and have the best forward until left in the Championship. I do think they are very wasteful though, they are too goal hungry and tend to mess up a lot of scores by going hunting for the goal when the point is there.

Maybe not but if the All Ireland was played in December last year Corofin would have won it as they were at their peak. By Feb they were flat easy pickings for Crokes. Maybe they are pacing themselves better this year? Brigids a much improvement outfit from last years Connacht final however they missed keys players such as Peter Domican and Ian Kilbride last year.

Thought Lundy was fantastic today, his vision and passing is something else, they missed him when he went off injured. Great game to watch, looking forward to the Connacht final.

Lundy did a lot of running alright.

He'd be a lot easier to like with less playacting, though.

A few costly misses though.

Corofin will need to improve if their to go all the way although as pointed out they may well not be at their peak yet, only time will tell.

The ref was poor, several of those frees for Brigids were extremely soft and some were just simply not even close to been fouls. Corofin will be disappointed not to have closed out the game when 5 points up and cruising but you have you to give Brigids credit for coming back when they looked out of it.

Read the post you Gobshite. The ref was shite. He favored corofin IMO. stop focusing on one point which has little to do with the point I was making. You have form with rossies but I usually ignore your rubbish. More fool me for engaging this time.

And you have no bias against Roscommon!!  I said they were similar, I did not say they were the same. How hard is that to understand. Try read my first post again, slowly or if your with someone get them to explain it to you. That's the end of this exchange, never argue with an idiot, first they drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

You tried to parallel them, they were not similar, they were worlds apart. One was a stonewall black card and a potential goal chance given the numbers over. The referee calls back the play and bottles the black card. The other was a debatable foul, it was a shoulder to shoulder hit after the Brigid's man hacked the ball away.

To say Brigids were wronged is risible. I don't have any particular slight against Roscommon but I do find the whinging and excuse making from a few posters unbearable at times. Today was a day where Brigids got a massive rub of the green with refereeing decisions and we have a guy like you telling us they were on the wrong end? Mental stuff.

That kind of behaviour reminds me of unionists, no matter how good a deal they're getting it's never enough. Saying you're being victimised when it's the opposite in reality gets my goat.

Jesus you are thick. I never blamed the ref for the defeat. I said he was poor, inconsistent, couldn't guess which way frees were going and favored corofin IMO. He did not determine the result, never even got close to suggesting that. Without watching the game again I stick to that. I agreed we got soft frees near the end but overall I though he favored corofin. The incident were similar as they were tackles where the players didn't have the ball and IMO both Molloy or Kilbride will struggle to avoid contact imo.

It's bad enough to see my native Mayo lose after extra time, replays etc but then to morph into #Rossieforaday and see the same thing happen..it's unbearable. Will never morph again. You're being very disingenuous here. You said the referee favoured Corofin when that was absolute tosh, his decisions on the day heavily favoured Brigids. The best example you could give of that was the paralleling of two incidents that are miles apart.

Incident one was where Corofin had an overload of attacking players, the Corofin player laid the ball off and was smashed with a frontal shoulder just after laying the ball off to one of his teammates. There was the makings of a goals chance at this stage and the referee bizarrely decided to pull the play back and issue the Brigids player with a yellow card for a black card offence.

Incident two was where a loose ball was in the middle of the pitch with a Corofin man and Brigids man sprinting to it, the Brigids man arrived first and hacked it away over the sideline and the two players mets with a shoulder on shoulder collision. The referee may have decided to give a free to Brigids but that would have been the height of it.

These incidents are not in any way comparable, Brigids got all the rubs of the green from the match official, it was not the other way around and it would a special sort of bias to see it that way. You seem to be quite stubborn on this as you are most certainly wrong.

The position of the offensive has nothing to do with anything. If it's a black, yellow, foul or no foul the fact there are attacking options is not relevant.

I gave other examples you somehow have focused on this one. The throw ball, cornor back on the end line. It doesn't really matter, you disagree with my opinion I've no issue with that your attempts to mid represent them is the issue I have.

You can continue to misrepresent my comments but it doesn't make you right. I've no problem with you or anyone else thinks the ref was any different that's your opinion and I have mine.

I'd agree, if Brigids showed more composure after the first goal it was there for them as apart from that period they were the better team over the 70. But then it is a team in transition and with a lot of youth to add (none of their Connacht winning minors even featured today, and their U16s this year are even better) so they'll be more than alright moving forward.

The big three from the top three counties have a stranglehold on Connacht at the minute, a good bit ahead of everyone in their own counties as well as a good bit ahead of any team Sligo or Leitrim have thrown up. Novel pairs are nice but you can't beat a good match like today's or what we're likely to see in the final in two weeks.

O'Hara was making the point that the intensity in the tackle is at a different level in the top three counties compared to Sligo and that it effects them when they hit Connacht, take that for what you will given he was talking after Mitchels had given his team a spanking.

Corofin were by some distance the better team today. They missed between 2 and 3 goal chances in the first half and opened the Brigids backs up easily. Brigids could have threw the towel in at half time or 12 mins into the second half but they didn't and were the better team for the last 20 mins. They missed 3 handy frees that would have won the game. However Corofin were the better team, looked sharper throughout, but I would in all honesty be very happy with the Brigids performance given the players they have at the moment. They are a team in transition and have huge talent coming through at underage level, their U16s were outstanding this year.
Thought the referee was poor, this is a recurring problem in the gaa and it's just not acceptable. Brigids did get a few handy frees, other decisions further out the field were baffling. Molloy (very good player) went full frontal for a ball he was never going to win, it was dangerous play and warranted a red in my opinion. Some of the passing by Corofin was sublime, the first goal was a superb move and execution.
Fair play to both teams for a very good contest at a difficult time of year. Fair play also to Rathnew, what a win.

Corofin Mitchels is a tough one to call.
Corofin imo are definitely not at the level they were when winning the AI in 2015.
They're still obviously a strong side at the same time.
But don't have the same squad depth/quality as before & the standard of underage player coming through wouldn't be as high as it was in the recent past.
I would doubt either of them would have an All Ireland in them.

Whoever wins Connacht has to fancy their chances against a Dublin-less Leinster. Certainly wouldn't be saying their isn't an AI in them, because honestly there's one in either of the finalists.

Was at the game and i thought it was refereed fairly well. There was a few decisions to either side that were questionable. Castlebar got away with some cynical fouling, dragging support players down (which i think is what he was referring to) but that apart ref did ok.

Hoping Ballymote can get the business done.  For Sligo to be successful we need more players from towns like Ballymote, Collooney, Ballisadare, Grange, Enniscrone, Coolaney,, Easkey, Rosses point etc...

Who was the last county senior player from each of these towns with the exception of Ewing?
Big win for Summerhill yesterday..

Noel Maguire though not exactly sure where in Easkey he's from. Mark Quinn is Cliffoney I think. Certainly haven't been many now that you mention it.

Wonderful performance by Glaveys, who never looked like they were going to lose. Andy Glennon deservedly MotM yet again. To beat the Mayo and Galway champions make it even more special. They never let Claregalway settle and when the goal chances came for them DOM made three excellent saves. Fitz's goal right after the half pretty much killed the contest, and while Claregalway brought it back to four points at one stage they had committed so many forward that it was easy for Glaveys to tag scores on at the other end.

This is a club that played in (and lost) the junior county final in 2013, won junior in 2014, then inter in 2015 before being relegated at senior in 2016. They've been on quite a journey at this stage and a lot of the key players are still young. It's hard to see them returning to inter in 2018 based on how good they've been this year.

About the only negative today is that Glennon, Fitz, Hussey and Patterson will be unavailable for the senior team until late January at the earliest - all four have been in great form and will add a lot for what should be a game-packed season for the county team.

And Peadar Earley was originally from Lahardane so it was some day for the Earley family - pity about their manager, though!!

Lahardane ..... Not bad for a team unmentioned as contenders for the Mayo Junior title at the start of the championship.

I'm not so sure about that.
From my read of it, Kilmaine were strong favourites (a team playing league football in Div 2 against some senior teams) with Lahardane, Balla and Ardagh all more or less equal second favourites (all playing in Div 1C against mostly intermediate clubs).

Any thoughts on how Sundays Connacht final will go? Micheal Lundy is out after an appendix operation a big blow to Corofin but even without him they remain favourites Corofin (8/15) Castlebar (9/4). Last year it took extra time to separate the two sides.

A win for Corofin would be a record breaking 8th Connacht Club SFC title & surpass Clann na nGael as the most successful senior club in Connacht.

I could see Mitchels winning this one, only because Corofin are definitely now on the downward slope and Mitchels still haven't fulfilled their potential and won the AI. It's pretty much a coin toss, though.
Title: Re: Connacht Club Championships 2017 - Senior/Intermediate/Junior Football & Hurling

Mitchels defense is very strong. McDonagh, Reilly and Durcan push forward at every opportunity. Big Barry, Kirby and Aian Walsh give a huge midfield presence. After that the problems start. James Durcan has done well as a ball carrier and Stenson has increased the take from frees but they are still over-dependent  on Neil Douglas as scorer in chief. Nevertheless  they have improved steadily and a win wouldn't surprise me. Corofin looked stretched in defense against Brigid's and McGrath in particular gave away a lot of frees.

Not exactly sure how Corofin conspired not to win that. They were so comfortable for most of the 2nd half. Had about 5 or 6 good goal chances throughout the game but only took 2 of them. It's like they stopped playing for the last 6 or 7 minutes and were caught waiting for the finishing post.

The reason they didn't win is clear. They had the upper hand for 20+ mins of the second half, five points clear and they decide to hold possession instead of going for the kill. I watched another game with the same bulls*hit tactics last night and it amazes mean how teams that are so dominant haven't the balls to go and kill a game. If this passes for good tactics/coaching someone has been employed beyond their pay-grade. It's not the Corofin way that we are used to.

Huge swing there. Missed penalty would have put 6 between them. Straight up the pitch and free to put only 2 between them.

Was thinking they maybe should have taken the point for the penalty. 4 points is a fair lead in extra-time in those conditions.

They probably gave Mitchel more respect than they should have. Corofin easily the best team in Connacht. And will be strong Contenders on the National stage.

Corofin are only just about the best in Connacht, and with lads like Fitzgerald, McGrath and Lundy starting to break down the gap isn't there anymore. They're a good team but there's no longer any fear factor around them at Connacht level.

Castlebar players made unusual Connacht final entrance

Castlebar Mitchels players were forced to jump a wall to gain entry to the Tuam Stadium pitch for today's Connacht club SFC final against Corofin.

The gates were closed when they left their dressing-room - was it a case of them being too early or was there some gamesmanship involved? By the time the Corofin players emerged from their changing room, the gates had opened.

Tuam Stadium is effectively a second home for Corofin, who went on to beat their Mayo rivals after extra-time to retain the Shane McGettigan Cup.

Lundy is only 27 I think.

They'll have to replace the other two in the year year or two alright.

I mean more to do with him carrying injuries than anything else. He's been burnt out after about 45 minutes the last two days.

I don't know how much of McGrath's stretchering off was playacting because he seemed to be jumping around celebrating just fine after the match.

He wasn't burnt out, he picked up a dead leg against Brigids and today he was just over a week after an appendix operation. I'd imagine they have 2 ready made replacements for Kieran Fitz and McGrath already in Daithí Burke and Dylan McHugh.

Nonsense to suggest Fulham should lose home advantage because of an act of nature. That would set a terrible precedent.

They were due back to Shannon this evening but looks like most flights out of London are cancelled, there's a good few of the younger lads with college exams tomorrow too I heard. Regardless of how much money a club has they shouldn't be expected to have to fork out twice for an expensive trip like that Syferus. And from next year on the London champs are into the Connacht championship so there'll be a Connacht team making this trip every year, it's a huge expense for a county team, never mind a club team.

That's a joke, if he was based in Dublin or Galway you might understand, but Castlebar is hardly a long trek. And to do it when Ballinrobe have just been relegated from senior really is a kick in the teeth for the club.

Did he have a falling out with someone at the club? The distance excuse obviously doesn't wash. Ballinrobe is about 20 minutes down the road. Not great optics to leave your club as soon as they are relegated. I'm sure they were hoping he'd lead them straight back up.

Did he think playing intermediate football would affect his Mayo chances? Don't see how it would as long as he performed. Plenty of great players on intercounty teams from intermediate clubs.

Heard about the Vaughan transfer and it disgusted me. It shouldn't be allowed. An awful kick in the teeth for all the people in Ballinrobe who helped him along his way. To quote another poster - I hope he wins nothing there. His conduct in the AI Final will haunt him for ages and this decision might too.

As for Marty - I think he could possibly have carried on at club level but this was definitely his last year of eligibility at county level.
