Penalty points to be equal in Ireland and UK

A deal has been reached between the Irish and British government that will see the penalty points system in Ireland and the UK legalized in both countries.

The new deal means that a driver banned from driving in either country will also be banned from the other country, but the new legislation will not come into force until next year.

There have been calls for the law to be introduced for some time now as there are an increasing number of Northern drivers being found guilty of motoring offences down south, but the penalty points do not affect them in Northern Ireland or the remainder of the UK.

Taoiseach Bertie Ahern lead a delegation to meet his British counterparts last week where the idea was discussed and all agreed to harmonise the penalty points system.

About time too!!!

Not before time.

East/West and North/South both make sense - the BIC and NSMC both need to make practical positive impacts on life in these islands and not just imagery. This is a good start.

Taken in conjunction with Dublin's funding for six counties' roads, another nifty piece of forward planning  ;)

Given the macho attitude on the roads, its not something I ever really do.  This is good news for pedestrians and cyclists too, including those who go side-saddle.   :-*

Total c@@p
Its important that sppeders from both juristictions can be tracked and treated as criminals...but paedophiles who cross the border, well theres no need to keep an eye on them!!!!!!!

Exactly, there are a variety of practical matters that can be attended to fairly easily that even GweylTah and I can agree about.
If at first you don't succeed, then goto Plan B

So next year the guards will be breathalising the Northern Reg motors after Oxegen then? not be as many making a break for it at dawn as this year then

I would say the guards could have caught a load of people at Oxygen if they really tried stiffller, we made a break for it at 7.30am and our partying was only just finishing at 4.30.

the biggest problem is young drivers being selfish and inconsiderate, too many boy racers thinks it makes them look hard, no point looking hard if ur dead or in jail, the penalty points can be flawed, for example an R driver was awarded three points for doin sixty less than the legal limit of seventy on the motorway but more than limit of 45mph placed on R drivers, the police should be looking for the 90 and 100mph speeders,  drivers should be tested at the legal road speeds

Speeding and drink driving is the worst carryon to be at. To many stories of young people getting killed on the road for these very reason. A fella that lives near me crashed his car the other day and the doctors say he is paralysed from the neck down forever. Sad how one stupid mistake can ruin your life forever.
