An artificial limbs specialist who fitted a left foot to a patient who had lost his right leg has been struck off.

Malcolm Griffiths admitted 16 charges relating to 11 patients at a rehabilitation clinic in Edinburgh.

The Health Professions Council heard complaints against Mr Griffiths, relating to his time at the Astley Ainslie Hospital.

One of the charges was he fitted a left foot to Patrick Morrison, 76, whose right foot had been removed.

The hearing heard that Mr Griffiths also failed to spot his error at two later check-ups.

Mr Morrison, from Bathgate, should have been given an artificial limb and right foot.

Mr Griffiths appeared before the conduct and competence committee of the Health Professions Council at the hearing in Edinburgh.

The charges he faced included fitting a lower limb with the wrong foot and and failing to provide adequate prosthetic care, which meant the socket required remaking.

Mr Morrison said he had been forced to have the limb fitted after an amputated toe became infected with MRSA following hospital treatment.

The specialist also faced several other claims relating to his time at the Astley Ainslie's rehabilitation centre.

These included failing to keep adequate notes, failing to carry out repairs and leaving a patient in pain.

Mr Griffiths' lawyer said his client admitted all the charges against him and requested that his name be removed from the health profession's register.

Called the Hotshot, the condom has been produced after government research showed 12 to14-year-olds did not use sufficient protection when having sex.

The study, conducted on behalf of the Federal Commission for Children and Youth, interviewed 1,480 people aged 10 to 20.


It showed more 12 to 14-year-olds were having sex, in comparison with the 1990s.

The Hotshot condoms, which cost 7fr60 (£4.70) for a packet of six, have been created by Lamprecht AG, a leading condom manufacturer in Switzerland.

The company has said the UK would be "top priority" if they expanded abroad, considering that it has the highest teenage pregnancy rate in Europe.

Nysse Norballe, a spokesman for the company, said: "At the moment we are only producing the Hotshot in Switzerland. But the UK is certainly a very attractive market since there is a very high rate of underage conception. The UK would definitely be top priority if we marketed abroad."

A standard condom has a diameter of 2ins (5.2cm) in comparison with the Hotshot's diameter of 1.7ins (4.5cm). Both are the same length – 7.4ins (19cm).

According to a German study of 12,970 13 to 20-year-olds, a quarter said a standard condom was too large.

Family planning groups and the Swiss Aids Federation campaigned to have the Hotshot produced after a number of studies, including the government study researched at the Centre for Development and Personality Psychology at Basel University.

Nancy Bodmer, who headed the research, said: "The result that shocked us concerned young boys who display apparently risky behaviour. They have more of a tendency not to protect themselves. They do not have a very developed sexual knowledge. They do not understand the consequences of what they are doing and leave the young girls to take care of the consequences.

"The results of this study suggest that early prevention makes sense."

The age of consent in Switzerland is 16, although if the age difference is not more than three years there will be no punishment. Other concessions exist if the older person is not more than 20 or believed the younger person to be at least 16.

The Swiss initiative comes as the UK government announces an overhaul of its teenage pregnancy strategy after new figures showed conception rate among 18s were not falling fast enough.

The UK has the highest teenage pregnancy rate in Europe.

In 1999, the government pledged to halve the teenage conception rate within 10 years.

But data released last week from The Office for National Statistics shows it has clearly failed to make any significant impact.

Not exactly, but he spoke to the pilot and gave the directions/co-ordinates or whatever it is airport controllers do.  Heard a clip of it on the news today and the wee fella was speaking to the pilot.

AN alleged pervert was caught with a picture of a man having sex with a dead SQUID, a court heard today.

Andrew Dymond, 46, was netted when cops apparently found a haul of grossly offensive porn on his home computer.

JPs heard the sea creature was clearly dead in the picture and a man was having sexual intercourse with it.

Dymond is charged with possessing an image of someone "performing an act of intercourse with a dead animal, namely an octopus/squid, which was grossly offensive, disgusting or otherwise of an obscene character".

He faces a total of 25 porn charges and entered no pleas when he appeared before magistrates.

Prosecutors claim Dymond also made 14 indecent photos of children and possessed an additional 57 child porn images.

He is also alleged to have had photos of a person performing sex acts with horses and dogs.

Four of the allegations state he had images showing acts likely to cause "serious injury to a woman's breasts" and private parts.

It is alleged the images range from level one to four. Five is considered the most serious.

Defending, Leigh Davies, told Swansea magistrates: "This is a case that's probably better dealt with in the Crown Court."

Dymond, of Mumbles, Swansea, was freed on conditional bail and is due to appear again on May 12.

Bench chairwoman Sonia Walters told him: "You're not to access the internet in any way, whether that's through a computer or a telephone or anyway possible."

Dymond was also banned from having any contact with a child under the age of 16.
