Didn't know which thread to put it in !!

Some asylum seekers who cross the Channel to the UK will be given a one-way ticket to Rwanda, under new government plans.

The trial will involve mostly single men arriving on boats or lorries.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the £120m scheme would "save countless lives" from human trafficking.

Refugee organisations have criticised the plan as cruel, questioned its cost and efficacy, and raised concerns about Rwanda's human rights record.

In a speech in Kent, Mr Johnson argued action was needed to stop "vile people smugglers" turning the ocean into a "watery graveyard", adding the "humane and compassionate" plan was designed to break their business model.

He said he wanted to make clear to people arriving on the Kent coast they were better off taking legal routes and that the new plan would "over time prove a very considerable deterrent".

It reads like a joke but it will actually work to prevent asylum seekers crossing the channel. Why would you cross the channel in a dingy if you know the prize on the other side is a one way ticket to Rwanda. They're essentially jailing asylum seekers in Rwanda and whilst that is obviously unpalatable, it is likely to be a strong deterrent. They'll actually end up sending very few people to Rwanda if this is successful.

Agreed. Either go the legal way or stay in France.

Yeah, but the issue is the legal way has been deliberately trapped in a minefield of bureaucracy and paperwork in the same way they're asking Ukrainian children for their original birth certs when they were fleeing their house in the dead of night.

Plus for those that see out the process over 75% prove not to be "illegal".

As if the risk of drowning at sea on a rubber boat wasn't deterrent enough.

So, its that bad from where they come from, they are willing to get in a dingy, with the high possibility of drowning, to be then deported from the UK to Rwanda and processed there, to then what, should they not be successful?

Why would you want to prevent someone fleeing their home from coming to a safe haven? It's an extremely cruel policy and typical of this Conservative government. It is deliberately timed to take the heat off Johnson and Sunak. They care not a jot about anyone bar themselves and their entitled mates.

If they introduced a sensible and straightforward immigration policy, people smugglers disappear. The current system is hostile to immigrants. And it designed that way deliberately.

As an aside... for a country such as Ireland where people emigrated from in their millions, I don't understand the issue some have when people want to come here, whether that is  Ireland or the UK.

Exactly - they are kicking no can. They are making the country as hostile as possible to immigrants and intentionally doing so. There are no boundaries, and there is no humanity, to these people. Yes every country doesn't have infinite resources so can't take in every asylum seeker etc but look at the Ukraine scenario and the number of immigrants taken in vs other countries. The tories are basically the lowest of the low.

Precisely this. The Irish diaspora have bennefitted greatly from other countries open policies and have had a large part in making the country what it is today. So I can never understand the mentality of Irish people who want to pull the ladder up and prevent immigrants from doing likewise here or elsewhere. It's a combination of 'I'm alright Jack' and racism or sometimes both.

armaghniac

It isn't racist to say that too much immigration is undesirable when there is a shortage of houses, people are on trolleys etc.
Immigrants are like traffic, driving to visit your granny is a good thing but it does not mean that too many cars does not mean traffic jams.

Many of those trying to get to the UK from France are fleeing wars in Africa and Asia.
White Ukrainians? Oh come on ahead! (Kind of We'll still make it difficult)
Black Africans? Its off to a concentration camp in Rwanda!

This is pure racism. And many fascist regimes have started in a similar manner. It's doesn't just happen overnight, but lots of tiny subtle changes overtime until it is too late. Johnson and his cronies have no respect for the rule of law or common decency.
