Quote from: Rufus T Firefly on January 28, 2025, 09:00:58 AMLast night's huge match between Burnley and ourselves turned out to be a damp squib, which is being kind. It was possibly in the running for the worst match I have ever seen. The first shot on target came from Dan James in the 89th minute. Burnley have a formidable defensive record and sat very deep and in all honesty Leeds did not really threaten a goal. It was desperate stuff. However, there was a sense that both managers were satisfied with a point, particularly given Sheffield United and Sunderland both dropping points this weekend.

For me though it underlined that there remain glaring issues for Leeds at numbers 9 and 10. Piroe has come in for a lot of flack for his performance, but I would still have him ahead of his replacement, Mateo Joseph, who again failed to make any impact in the time he played.

The coming weeks will see the pressure add, as we have Sheffield United away and Sunderland at home. Huge games.

You are bigging that game up, it was far worse than that lol

Brutal match but I'm happy to have taken a point. Going away to a promotion rival a point is solid. Onus was on them as the home team and they never bothered us at all. Probably sums it up when I felt the most likely to score or create a goal was our right back, Bogle.

Bogle is playing well - offers a lot in support of the attack.

She was having a bath so I put it on, was expecting a top of the table clash but after 30 minutes I was so happy to turn it over.. Mates a mad Leeds supporter and he was telling the rest of the game was as bad

Burnley was an amazingly dull game but it was essential not to lose in the circumstances, and, after the setbacks for Sheffield United and Sunderland at home to relegation threatened opposition, it definitely goes down as a point gained. The wider issue, as Rufus points out again, is the lack of cover at no 9 and 10, with the transfer window closing on Monday and no hint of arrivals. Piroe and Aaronson have been decent rather than brilliant so far, and there are no compelling options in the squad if injuries occur. While Farke has suggested that players from other positions could be shuffled about, he has largely avoided experimentation so far. He has spoken of wanting to maintain the positive spirit in the group, but he will be taking an enormous risk if he does not bring in at least one new face. The poor goal scoring records of Joseph and Bamford mean they are unlikely to be the answer and the pursuit of Buendia never looked serious. Unless there is some undisclosed financial fair play disaster in the background, money must be available after all the departures last summer. Farke still gets flak from some fans but deserves great credit for steering the club through huge upheaval and keeping us top of the league. Nothing less than promotion will still be acceptable and it may well all come down to his recruitment policy.

Massive win tonight. Didn't play great, lot of overplaying I thought. Once they got the ball in the box Sunderland were all over the place. Even bigger one next Monday.

That was a great win. Rothwells quality made the difference. MOT.

Well now, I will confess I've had worse nights!!  ;D

That was absolutely exhilarating and for long, long stretches of that game, I thought we'd end up with nowt.

Huge win, which surely (hopefully) knocks Sunderland out of top two contention. Tough on the Black Cats, but no tougher than their equaliser was on us at the Stadium of Light.

Fair play to Farke. Thought he'd got the subs wrong, but they come up trumps. Both Striujk and Rothwell outstanding.

MOT!!

A big win for Leeds tonight at second place Sheffield United. A late surge which they have done a few times this season.

Great win. Thought they were going to destroy us after 20 mins but after that initial onslaught we were the better team.

Agreed. They really got tore into us and Leeds were rattled. Meslier's uncertainty added to the nervousness, although to be fair, like the team as  whole, he recovered well, after the first quarter.

It was a significant victory, and underlines that the only side capable of denying Leeds promotion is Leeds!

Thought Bogle and Rodon were excellent, but my man of the match was Firpo who drove the team forward. There's also an argument that in the absence of Ampadu, Rothwell should be starting. He was influential when he came on.

I hope the celebrations have long since finished, and we font take our eye of West Brom on Saturday.

Things are really looking promising!

Is the goalie not a glaring weakness chaps? Only see bits and pieces but more often then not there's a mistake in this boy. Seems v weak

I think so but Darlow came in for a cup game and was flapping too.

Agree on Rothwell. My 11 the other night would have been him in for Aaronson and Struijk in for Gruev. Obviously Ampadu got injured so either Gruev or Aaronson could make their way back in but I thought both Struijk and Rothwell done enough against Sunderland to warrant starts.
